Exactly.
Most of them don't actually go through the tutorial. They click past warnings and information panels. They're used to easy games where everything is self-explanatory and you don't have to learn something in order to play.
This shouldn't be catered to. CCP has made numerous additions to help noobs just in the 8 months I've been playing. They've made the tutorial more in-depth, they've added these info windows that you get whenever you open a new feature that you have to either read, or find the tiny box to check, marked "Do not display this again." It's been my understanding that they've done this to make it easier for noobs to FIND the stuff they need to read - not to make it so they don't have to read it.
That idiot lost his ship to his own stupidity and laziness - I wish it had been a more expensive loss, like an e-bayed Machariel with officer fittings and T2 rigs or something.

I'm sorry, but the UI blows chunks. You choose self-destruct, and you get a message that it's been started and that you can turn it off the same way you turned it on - hit self-destruct again.
THEN NOTHING AFTER THAT
until your ship blows up, suddenly.
There's a reason why in all the SCI-FI and action movies I've seen there's an alarm beeping, a countdown, a voice reminding everyone how many seconds until total destruction, and whoever's in charge of cancelling is reminded of how to do it early, when the alarms start beeping but since there's enough stuff to create client lag, CCP has graciously left nonsense like this out of EVE.
The way EVE handles a self-destruct is fine. There should not be flashing letters all over the screen, a buzzing sound, and goddamn escape pods of all your ship's supposed crew ejecting from it, for the duration of the self-destruct countdown.
Jeeze Louise! So many mistakes in this post. I've cut a little bit out of it and added some stuff to make it look more presentable. The stuff I added is in orange text.

Sucks to not be Ripley or Picard, don't it.
Originally by: Dav Varan OK so I know how to cancel the auto-destruct.
But I think its too easy to do it by mistake when
a) English is not the first language of many playing eve. b) People do play eve drunk/stoned. c) Newer players are not always familiar with the procedures.
a) There are multilanguage clients, are there not? b) Your vices, your problem. c) That's why there are pop-up messages and tutorials. Ignorance is no excuse when the information is put on screen for you and you decide to just click through and not read it. No sympathy for those players.

It would take a competent programer no more than an hour or two to add such a feature. It only needs to be programmed client side - failed code entrys send no message to the server.
Everybody wins.
Do your idea of Everybody wins is to dumb down EVE? The self-destruct feature has existed for years in its current form and nobody has had a problem, until some idiot gets drunk and starts clicking on stuff, not knowing how it works, and not bothering to read the pop-up window, now some other guy wants to make a thread about what a great idea it would be to add hand-holding features to the game. No, dude. Just... no.
