i have a different proposal.
introduce a 2% chance that an instant self-destruct is triggered when you eject from a ship :D

The difference is that they didn't want Ripley to nuke the Nostromo – they docked her pay and took away her license for doing so. Us podders, otoh, own our ships and are allowed to blow them up as much as we want to.
Also, unless the self destruct code is 1a3b3c, I don't want any part of it.

CCP should send everyone an USB-connected button and keylock, with a plexi-glass casing around it to prevent mistakes. And to initiate self destruct, you would have to turn the key, hit the button, and also say your self destruct code out loud into a microphone.

Even better idea. Make it so you have to give voice confirmation of a code shown on screen so its really dramatic and stuff like in Star Trek. It also stops drunk people doing it as they their speech will be slurred.

I been playing for about 4 years. Aside from the obvious, What the hell is that self-destruct thing for? I think I only used it once just to see what my rookie ship looked like when it popped .

Or you could have self destruct only available after taking an in-game IQ test as part of character creation.
IQ < 30 no self destruct option.

Edited by: Heyte on 10/05/2008 02:38:27 Captain Picard: Indeed, stoned and drunk I am, indeed and shall I remain, indeed. *falls on top of self destruct panel*
Computer: Confirm self-destruct?
*Picard flops about on panel, accidentally pressing anonymous touch screen again*
Computer: Countdown initiated.
Picard: Huh?
Computer: 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining until self-destruct
*Picard wobbles to a stand, hits head on sliding door*
Picard: Dammit!
*Picard flops back into seat, his hands spread across a panel that apparently does nothing; meanwhile, the crew watches agape and drooling... doing nothing*
Picard: Man... what a spot I am in, indeed... dude...
Computer: 30 seconds remaining until self-destruct.
Picard: Oh noes!
*Picard activates the pilot help line, shouts incomprehensibly, curses his mother out on the phone, spills his beer, cheetos, and blunt, promptly setting the carpet on fire, simultaneously*
Computer: 10 seconds to self-destruct. 9... 8...
Picard: Screw you guys! I'm outta here. *hits the pilot eject button*
Computer: 7... *beep-beep* Just relax and wait for the bang, man... 6...
Picard: Ah f***, why would I relax... what does that mean... wait, I've already spammed 8 radio channels.
Computer: You are lagging the system. Please wait a few moments before ejecting, relax and wait for the bang.
Picard: Well, how hard can that be?
Computer: 2... 1...
Picard: Indeed... f***...
*BOOM*
That's pretty much how it goes down in Eve.

How about entering a code in a pop up dialogue to start auto-destruct.
you select auto destruct as at present. A dialogue box pops up saying please enter destruct code "NXTGSO" to confirm auto destruct. The dialogue has a text entry box where you type the code and a confirm and cancel button.
Why ? to stop post like these
The code is randomly generated btw
wait, youre defending the guy who lost 90 mil? If youre too dumb to realize you can cancel self destruct, you shouldnt be playing eve online.
