I'm at a stage where I need to choose between the 2 skills mentioned above. What I'm after is your opinions on what's best to spend a month training on. I can use either missiles or hybrids so that makes no difference to my choice, but I am only going to train one of them just now and need to know which is best, taking into consideration PvP will be a priority. If you do have an opinion then please give a reason for it too thanks.
Cheers........Chisii

For PVP: Gallente BS 5 (Dominix) For PVE: Caldari BS 5 (Raven)
It should be noted that I don't have Gallente BS5, and I *AM* training Caldari BS 5 for the Scorpion.

They're both fine choices. If you gotta pick one, Raven for lo-sec, Mega for 0.0... except well Scorpion is pretty good for both I guess.

The raven is the best battelship out there. As a caldari you shoudn't use stinky gallente technology, stay with caldari products, don't create jobs oversea ... err overspace.

Erhem *clears throat*
The dirty Achura posting above me obviously has no idea what he is talking about.
The Gallente blasterboat that is the Megathron is hands down the finest battleship of the two. Why?
1) It possesses an outstanding active OR passive tank.
2) It does higher DPS than the Raven, and DPS is sort of needed to blow things up.
3) It is not made of cheap steel and flimsy tubings.
4) It has 7 slots for turrets AND 2 launcher slots. The Raven only has 7 Missile slots and 2 turret slots. Guns > Missiles.
5) The Megathron looks cooler.
These are 5 award-winning reasons as to why the Megathron is superior to the Raven. The Raven has one defining quality however... it reprocesses nicely into a rather large pile of minerals. :3

No, seriously, are you saying you deal more effective DPS at, say, oh, 15... or 20... or 30 km from a Mega vs the DPS a Raven can dish out at that distance ? I'll take a small gang of Ravens + some minnie recons or ewar frigs over any "gallente-only" gang of similar size any time of the day.

Raven deals more damage than the Megathron, but the Megathron is more... flexible. To be honest, neither one of them is overall better than the other in PvP, but each might be preferred in a specific PvP situation. A small gang of ships including Ravens is deadlier than many give 'em credit for, but the Megathron has stayed popular for fleet PvP for a long time now. ---

:eng101: the term you are looking for is "unresisted DPS".
Sorry Akita, I didn't mean to crap all over your Raven.
Your Raven can do decent DPS at 30km, but so can my Megathron. My Megathron has a better chance TO DAMAGE things because it doesn't rely on the signature radius of a target to do damage. If it hits, it hurts. Meanwhile, and I quote one of my comics:
Here we have a rofltastic image of a torpedo hitting a target and scratching it. If that was a neutron blaster that ship would instapop.
So, simple fact is you do crap dps to anything smaller than a battleship. IF you use torpedoes.
But I can hear a "we can use cruuiisesee missillesss". So let's run EFT and check the unresisted DPS.
Okay. Cruise missiles are designed for long range combat, yeah? Alright.
At all skills set to level 5, your cruise missiles with tech 2 launchers and standard cruise missiles do 272 DPS. My Megathron with all skills set to level 5 with 7 425mm Railgun IIs do 273 DPS.
Akita, I just beat you at your silly little game of semantics.
BTW: I just remembered the Raven only has 6 launcher slots. Another reason for it to suck, lol. Another less chance for it to hit xD
edit: i kan spel gud

:eng101: The Dominix is hands down the HIGHEST DPS SHIP OF ITS CLASS.
I fly a Dominix religiously. Let's examine teh awesome sex that is the domi.
All skills level 5, using Ogre IIs:
Abaddon: 672 DPS (Mega Pulse Laser II) Armageddon: 767 DPS (Mega Pulse Laser II) Apocalypse: 576 DPS (Mega Pulse Laser II) Dominix: 897 DPS (Neutron Blaster Cannon II) Hyperion: 816 DPS (Neutron Blaster Cannon II) Maelstrom: 677 DPS (800mm Repeating Artillery II) Megathron: 809 DPS (Siege Missile Launcher II) Raven: 689 DPS (Siege Missile Launcher II) Rokh: 576 DPS (Neutron Blaster Cannon II) Scorpion: 440 DPS (Siege Missile Launcher II) Tempest: 587 DPS (800mm Repeating Artillery II) Typhoon: 861 DPS (800mm Repeating Artillery II/Siege Missile Launcher II)
There you have it. The Dominix does hands down MORE dps than ANY OTHER BATTLESHIP. PERIOD.

Go with the Gallente boat. As Gallente, you're probably armor tanking. Caldari ships are typically shield tanked, so all your armor tanking skills go out the window and you need to train shield tanking skills.
The only real benefit you would get for going Caldari is the ability to change damage types at will. It's really nice to have that option for PvP, but if you don't have the skills to tank it properly, it's a moot benefit.

It's only the Raven that can really do this. The hybrid ships are stuck with kin/therm perhaps even more than their Gallente counterparts due to a smaller dronebay. The ECM ships ... well, technically you can swap cruise missiles around on a scorp, but it doesn't matter what damage type you're doing, when you're damage is laughable.

To humor you, I switched out the ammos on the Dominix, Typhoon, Raven and Armageddon with Navy ammos.
Dominix: 960 DPS Typhoon: 943 DPS Armageddon: 834 DPS Raven: 764 DPS
Caldari ships just don't do DPS. They're ships for carebears and reprocessing, and that's about it. Damage mods are not going to be added, because I don't think honestly anybody really even flies with these ships. But this clearly shows the Domi is way ahead of it's class. IF you were to fit damage mods, you'd get 1375 on the 'Phoon and 1349 on the Domi (it needs an RCU to run) but you're never really going to see those setups with split damage mods.
Overall, Domi wins.

True true. Look, I've done enough EFT PVP today. Fact is, the Dominix is hands down the top ship for DPS.. If you gotta have a ship with ANY sort of logistical capability that can dish out damage and take any damage.
Facts are: The Dominix is a cheap, effective gankboat that is typically not seen as a Neutron Domi often. However, because above, all the same rules were applied to all the ships you can see that the Dominix with a neutral fit is going to do more damage than any other ship in its class.
It has good HP, and it has a VERY good range considering you can switch out drones for any type you see fit during the fight. The flexibility and power offered by the Dominix makes it without a doubt the best reason to train Gallente Battleship to 5. (If all you're after is battleships.)
