Are there frequently people who scan you down in mission, warp to you and destroy you or ransom you? How do you guys do mish'es in .4 when you can be tracked down and destroyed versus a >.5 mish? Any input would be greately appriciated.

For example, some low sec system close to high sec mission/trade hubs or on route between 2 trade hubs or a trade/mission hub are usually very busy.
I've never been scanned down in a mission in low sec myself. Happens in high sec far more frequently :P
Some things to remembers:
Keep your scanner open and set its scan range to 300,000 km or 500,000 km. Stay alligned to a station/stargate/safespot. Kill warp scrammers in the missions asap. Bring more tank incase those scrammers spawn more groups.
Check how close your mission deadspace is to any celestial objects (planets, moons, stations, stars, asteroid belts...) using the map or just the overview (have an overview setting that shows all objects). If you are further than 14 AU(I prefer 14.5 or 15 myself) from any object, the chances of being scanned down quickly are lower then they are if you are like 10 AU away from a planet for example.

But you can be scanned down in a mission as fast as you can be scanned down in normal space or 0.0 right? Mission dosen't make it more difficult right?

Eh, I think missions make it even easier because of wrecks and drones (if you use any).

Well, I am doing some mish in .3 and I am continually scanning for scan probes on my radar. I guess as soon as I see one probe i'm getting out of there. Other than that I don't see any ways to keep myself safe and still do missions in <.4

For anyone with a rudimentary grasp of English there is no alternative association. This is my experience. I've never been scanned down in low sec, only ever had problems with gatecamps.
Interestingly, I HAVE been scanned down in Empire, but for the wrecks.

Usually people scan you down in high sec because they can then proceed to ninja-salvage your wrecks without you being able to shoot back.
In low-sec, if you scan out someone to ninja-salvage their wrecks, you'll most likely end up as a wreck yourself.
That should answer why people get scanned out in high-sec, but not so often in low-sec.
Also, most mission running in low sec is L4's, which means whoever is doing the mission is equipped to handle a wider range of ships, from frigate to battleships, which means scanning them out and trying to take them on is greater risk than finding a newb ratting in a low-sec belt, or simply camp the gates.
Of course, if someone *really* wants to they can run a cov-ops to probe out the mission runners, then warp in their pirate gang, but most don't go through that hassle (or haven't even cared to train up the probe skills sufficiently) thus it isn't as widespread.

I've only been scanned down once in lowsec doing a mission, the covops was a little surprised when he warped into the sentry guns I left alive in GE.

Bold bit 1-Killing things in belts is far more dangerous as its exposed. Mission busting is far less risky.

This is spot on...and frankly the camps are few and far between. No excuse for cheerily jumping in unscouted however.

Seriously though, certain 0.4 systems are hangouts for experienced pirates *cough*Amamake*cough*, and we found out the oh-so-hard way that if you try to run missions in those systems, you had better be prepared to bounce a multi-t2-ship gank or you won't make much ISK. We ended up settling for a lower-quality agent in high sec for the time being.
But, as people have said, it does depend on the system. But pirates are smart...if there is a system close to high sec with some L4 contacts in it, well if you were a pirate, isn't that where you would hang out?
As far as what to do to avoid it, nothing is 100% except being so bad-arse that you can run the mission AND simultaneously fend off attackers that are likely to show up (I am not, BTW). But some stuff that can stack the odds maybe: - Watch local...if some -10 folks start showing up in system, you have about 15 minutes to live. - Stay aligned to something when running the mission so you always have an escape route. - Fit modules like nanos or istabs that improve your align time. - Or do what we did...move back to high sec :)

Again this varies by system. We were unlucky in that we picked probably the worst system in Minmatar space for this (which also happens to be the one with the most L4 contacts...coincidence?) We had this happen to us several days in a row before we called it quits.

Probing down someone in a deadspace is 100x harder than in normal space.
Use the directional scanner as has been stated before. Max range, turn off use overview settings.
If you see "Scan probe", be wary. If it's "Spook Scanner Probe", "Ferret Scanner Probe" or something like that...pull in your drones, set your scanner to 500,000 km. He will have a ***** of a time probing you out without your drones out. If he shows up on scan at 500K KM, he's gotten to the acceleration gate, get the **** out ASAP. However, he might stick around, so you might have to wait awhile to continue the mission. Some people opt to retreat at the first sign of a probe in the system. You'll be interrupted more, but it means once the pirates leave you will be able to very safely go back to it.
If you see "X Quest Probe" (where X is Radar, Ladar, Magnetometric, or Gravimetric), be very wary. Quest probes, (IF they correspond to your ship's sensor strength (Magnetometric for gallente, for example), are very easily able to probe you down. The plus side is that it will take him quite awhile to run one scan cycle. However, he can still probe you down with a probe that doesn't correspond to your sensor strength.
If you see quest probes on scan, set your scanner to 600,000,000 km and scan. If you still see it, he's in range. Time to GTFO.
If you see quest probes in the system that aren't within 4 AU, ignore them.

This actually is REALLY good advice! Thanks.
Now a few questions to clarify
1. Why exactly is it harder to probe somebody down in deadspace? Is it because they cannot warp to you unless they go to the acceleration gate? If yes then how can he get to the acceleration gate since there is no signal to lock into to arrive there. 2. Why if you pull your drones inside is it a lot harder to scan you down? 3. What is the difference between the scanner probes and the Signature specific probes (magno, radar, ladar, gravi) etc? I have checked them out and the scan deviation is a LOT higher than the normal scanner probes while the scan range is alot smaller. 4. I guess your set scanner to 500.000km only applies if you are in a deadspace mission. If it's a normal mission, that is irrelevant correct?

It's 100x harder just because it's 100x harder. Deadspace masks your signature. When using normal recon probes (spook, ferret, fathom, snoop) the prober will have to run the scan several times hoping for just one hit. If you are a lone target, you're going to be hard to find. If you are a battleship and five drones, that's six target, increasing your prober's chances of a scan hit dramatically.
Quest probes have much higher power to detect you, but very short range, and importantly, they require a different probe launcher than the recon probes. Your prober will have to get close to you, using recon probes, then dock up and re-fit to come back with a quest probe. The quest probe is almost guaranteed to land a direct hit on your signal, but the scan probe launcher requires more time to run. For somebody with moderate skills it may take 3-5 minutes, as opposed to about 1 minute for the recon probes. For a very well-skilled prober you can be looking at 2 minutes versus 20 seconds.

Speaking from personal experience:
1. It is much riskier jumping through that first gate into low sec than it is in low sec. 2. Some pirates are excellent probers. Especially the ones who hang out in Decon. Props to them for their probing skills. Props to me for sitting 100km from the gate, aligned to warp out.
I don't run missions in low sec, it just isn't worth the trouble. If I want high reward/high risk, I can go to 0.0 and rat on my other account. Much safer than mission running in low sec. ------------

As far as I'm aware Quest, Pursuit, Comb, and Sift probes are only for scanning out exploration sites.

No, they work for ships as well. The scan cycle just lasts longer than with recon ones, but the actuall scan strength boost is really handy. ---

Being in deadspace makes it harder to be scanned. Deploying drones makes it easier to be scanned. Fitting Eccm (supposedly) makes it harder to be scanned.
Wrecks are not scannable.

Drones are treated as extra things to scan for. So if he has a 10% chance of scanning you, and a 5% chance of scanning each drone (made up numbers) then he has a 10%, 5%, 5%, 5%, 5%, and 5% of finding something where you are. With the magic of probabilities, that's not 35%, but it's better than just 10%.

Some mission probers have lots of bookmarks in their favourite systems. They don't bother with recon probes and just drop the appropriate quest probe when they see a ship within 4AU on the directional scanner at one of their probing bookmarks.
