Noob question, but of the 4 ships I've lost since I started 3 have been killed the same way, by CONCORD sentry guns at jump gates. The first time I assumed I had shot by accident so wrote it off as a learning experience, and same for the second time. However, I just got killed for the 3rd time without touching the keyboard at all.
I was on autopilot , and coincidentally on the phone at the time. Not touching the keyboard at all I watch as my Kestrel approaches a jump gate, targets the gate and fires a salvo of 4 missiles at it. Of course I died. But the question is why ? I know for a fact I didn't do anything yet my ship acquired a target and opened fire of it's own free will. I have good standing and security rating.
So what happened there ?

Your ship.. autotargeted a jump gate... and FIRED upon it.. even though you did NOT touch your keyboard?!
I think you need to call Ghost Busters...
(or get some vira scanning software, iether way, spooky)

Edited by: Petr Sorokin on 29/04/2004 10:16:05 While it is somewhat amusing.. lol I was hoping there was some auto target or something I had perhaps hit by accident. ;)
Nothing more annoying than completing a mission, going on to auto pilot and coming back to find you have fearlessly attempted to take out a jump gate. :)

Edited by: Lady Michelle on 29/04/2004 10:22:23 EDIT: Oh, forgot about FoF missiles, they will autofire. For the sake of it, disable your "autotargeting when targeted". It's in your config, "Target how many targets back" or something it should say. Defalts to 1, I've set mine to 0, I can handle my own targets.
Regardless of targeting, your weapons will NOT fire unless you tell them to.
This can be done by clicking the weapon modules, OR by hitting F1-F8
You COULD have by accident hit the F keys for your missile bays, but HOW you got them targeted by accident without touching the mouse is beyond me.

Do you have FoF missiles fitted?
At many gates there are small NPC pirate craft that will target and attack you. Your ship automatically targets attackers and FoF missiles will auto fire. If a gate happens to be nearby, you are ****ed.
Have a nice day.

well, I had a similar problem a while ago. I dispatched some guristas, and when I approached the cargo container, my ship auto-targeted it and fired a salvo, hopefully not doing enough damage to destroy the container. After some thought, I think it happened because I've hit the F keys after my target was dead (maybe 0.5 sec after, bad reflex :p), thus activating my lauchers with no target locked. Maybe the ship targeted the first thing in front of me to fire my missiles... that's the only explanation I could find for why my ship targeted and fired my launchers at that poor container ^^
