Will it take anything away from the game by being added? No, and it gives people who are interested in that sort of thing something to do. I for one am looking forward to Ambulation. I'll still be spending the majority of my time in space, yes but it's a welcome addition to my experience and can only improve eve in my opinion.

ok without being a killjoy i only see 1 bad thing coming from all this and thats more "kids" coming to play from say WOW as an example.
I play WOW and tbh i play in a small group who are all older gamers so having to watch my mouth isnt really an issue amongst us. Also we dont have someone yelling or crying about something over vent.
But aside from my views i think the game will be alot more interactive amongst forums and cant wait to see how it grows.
One other note - Will the transition from Now to ambulation be free (Not the expansion but the character). So in simple will we be able to change the whole apprearence for free as CCP charges for those changes at present time.
Cheers

I forsee many Amarrian Vladimir Harkonnen lookalikes. I wonder if the outfit choices with include suspensor globes for those too obese to carry their own weight. I wonder at how far the character editor will allow us to diverge from the basic human norm. Many science fiction authors have speculated at the physiological changes that might result from humans living a majority of their lives subject to gravities significantly different from those of earths. Im really hoping I can make Phant a freakishly tall, spiderishly attenuated wierdo. C'mon CCP, let us be freeeeaks. *hoists his freakflag up the mizzenmast* |

I would than use the /nano emote when custom officers come to arrest me for disturbing the peace. Er, I mean /runaway emote.
I would maybe just for the heck of it find the most pompous looking race and make him incredibly fat and call him either Jabba or Omnomnom. ____________________

I look forward to the time I will spend playing with the character editor, it would be nice if they could make this a more than one-off experience. I would like to be able to design a new character shape and have my ingame avatar morph from the old to the new over a period of days/weeks/months. So if I am skinny now, I can select a fatter or more muscular model and ingame it will take time to actually change. Possibly made quicker by training some new skill.
It would also be good for ageing your character; Over a period of 2 years you should be able to have your character go from a fresh-faced youth to a look that reflects your in-game experiences somehow.
Both of these would be awesome. It would definitely up the immersion factor if your character's appearance changes over time instead of instantly going from fat to thin or whatever.
Quote:
Also needed; some restrictions on clothing choices so that you can generally tell, from looking at a character, whether they are a solider/hauler/businessman, or officer/POS Manager/tycoon, or General/Director/CEO; i.e. the clothing is very customisable, but you can tell from across the room if a group of people are some mercenaries celebrating after successful contract, or a group of traders discussing business.
Then within that, you should be able to roughly guess who are the lower/middle/higher level people in that group...
I really hate games where everyone can wear anything and 90% of players pick the darth vader costume.
I don't agree with this at all. Anyone should be able to wear anything. Sure, you'll probably get a couple thousand people wearing the black 'I think I look like a badass' costume, but restricting clothing based on job, class, or anything else goes against the 'go anywhere, do anything' idea that's at the heart of EVE.
Besides, without any sort of class system, how would you determine what type of clothing a character is allowed to wear? Perhaps by which types of skills that character has invested the most skill points in, but what if I was a combat pilot in my youth and have since retired from that life and am now a semi-successful industrialist? Can I not wear a nice suit because I'm better at destroying things than creating them, even though I don't do that anymore? Or the other way around: I'm a businessman who wants to learn to fight, but I can't wear a pilot's suit because I'm too rich?
What I'm trying to say is you can tell more about a person by what they choose to wear than by what they are forced to wear by some artificial system.

Question from the Mac client corner;
We don't even have the premium graphics, even though the Trinity trailer says available for Mac & Linux... (cough) How far away will ambulation be for us, given the above?

Despite your flame and swearing, you do speak the truth but what you need to understand is the ambulation project is about getting more subscribers, specifically the type that love the visual social stuff more than the actual gameplay. It's not a bad thing and it's not a good thing - it kind of balances itself out because in the end there will be more money for the REAL AGENDA and that is...YARDWARE FOR EPIC FLEET PEW PEW.
That's right. Ambulation will help raise cash for evil pvp needs. Don't think for a second ccp has turned soft, there are still some hardcore mofos in there that just wanna blow **** up.
So I welcome ambulation and CCP's vision and evolution, i know they will do a great job of it, and in the end we will all get what we really want. _______

I am nothing but optimistic about ambulation. I hope they implement some for of combat using it eventually, but I'm cognizant of the problems that represents and am not holding my breath. It looks like it will be another interesting thing to do when you don't feel like doing something in space (Or are camped in.)

Short-sighted much? If they pull this off, this is going to be Epic, quite possibly changing Eve from a game to a phenomenon. --------------

I don't like to alter people's quotes, but this guy is a moron. CCP has already stated that NONE of the people responsible for ironing out the bugs in EVE are working on ambulation. If I recall correctly, the ambulation expansion was devised by an external company originally as a concept for CCP/Whitewolf's joint venture vampire mmo.
What we are going to get in ambulation is not much more than "proof of concept", it will be running almost entirely seperately from EVE itself, on a different server, with its own group of staff to oversee it. It has, im almost certain, been stated before that ambulation will not cost us anything and WILL NOT take away any resources currently used by EVE itself.
So quit your whining, grow up and pay attention, you might actually learn something. Ambulation will not cause lag, ambulation will not stop them fixing bugs in EVE and most importantly........YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE IT!!! thanks for reading...

As I have already stated I am immensely excited about the prospect of parambulating stations but I will be quite disappointed if any of these things are omitted:
Still, I'm sure it'll be excellent any way.

It can also have some other, not immediately obvious, benefits to EVE as well.
Example, under ther current system when you dock at a station you are still under control of the node that is currently running that system/cluster. Ambulation allows CCP the create a scenario where docked and otherwise idle characters can be shunted off to a different node freeing up resources for the rest of the system.
Because there won't be any combat with ambulation, and the interactions will be minimal and mostly chat and emotes you could probably run the entire population of ambulating characters on a fraction of the resources than chatacters that are docked but still in their ship would require (bacause the ship stil requires a whole slew of calculations, ie how your skills adjust things like shield, guns etc, are applied even when idle).
Basically it allows CCP to take all those docked characters in places like Jita off the node without having to completely rejig the way docking currently work. Although they could do that and keep the rather dull floating ship screen we currently have but they may as well add something that will keep a not insignificant number of their subscriber base happy.
It also lets the Dev and graphic design team a great opportunity to wave about their collective electronic wangs (which they have shown with the trinity expansion are already pretty impressive).

It's not eye candy, socialization is an important thing for many eve players.
Anyway, they haven't contributed many resources to ambulation. With the artists done with Trinity (except a few maybe working on the part 2), they have to move on to something, which in this case is ambulation.
There are still coders currently recoding the server code (it's a major overhaul that has been into development for some time)
And the game designers are still obviously focusing on eve in space (factional warfare and the empyrian age, which doesnt include ambulation)

listen nub, I care not one jot that the team responsible for ambulation have nothing to do with fixing bugs, I care not one jot that it will be a different server etc etc. What I do KNOW is that Eve needs fixing. What I do know is that the resources (thats money, man-power etc) wasted on ambulation would have better spent by spending it on the bug team so they can recode and fix the fuking game. Everytime we have a free (ty ccp) upgrade we get a whole plethera of bugs most of which are continuous from the patch before. What I do know, because ive been with the game since the beginning, that bugs from Beta are still in this game (over-view anyone?). So, because you are a stupid pr1ck without a clue i'll repeat my dream. Fix the fuking game, make gameplay more important that content and that way you will retain players and make more subscriptions. When you have done this, then they can give all the money and resources they want to ambulationn and I wont give a sh1t. As for the moron tag, it takes one to know one.
Heres what we have: Add content, make patch to fix the serious issues raised by patch leaving all other bugs alone, add content, leave bugs, add content, add content, release hurried patch to fix serious issues leaving all other bugs alone...
So heres what to do:Fix all the bugs, add content, fix all the bugs, add content .. ad infinitum
