Rescue shifts are often chaacterized by long periods of inactivity punctuated by terrible urgency in a rescue or two. Such was the case for this shift. Four rescues were conducted during my shift. The time frames are listed in the data given below. There seem to be periods of time where criminal slavers trafficking people across Empire borders are found in more significant numbers. There doesn't seem to be any connection between these pilots other than they all were hired to do illegal transport jobs and then changed their minds at the border. The easy thing to do there is to dump slaves and slavers together. We rescue both. Former slaves enter our Matriculaton Centers, Slavers enter our Detention Centers and rehabilitation program if they choose.

114/05/28 9:48 43 lives (blue can, name withheld)
amunition inventory of 3333.1 m3
The last entry acknowledges my delight to confiscate a significant cache of ammunition. DSTON will store it indefinitely and keep it from being used in violence. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

Four rescues on my patrol shift saved a total of 96 lives. Human trafficking has not seemed to diminish so our work and the continuing work of others who also rescue the unfortunate, will continue as long as the need continues. Where there are capsuleers who minimize the value of life, there are also those among us who maximize the value of life.

Both sexes, all races; no one seems to be immune to this disregarding of life that we wee in our rescue work. These were unconscious when found and near death. I am sorry that I did not get the time stamp on this rescue. Their survival was the focus at the time and we rushed back to the center as quickly as possible. Imagine losing consciousness, thinking that you were dying for sure, then waking up and realizing that you had another chance at life. Hmm, a little like being a capsuleer I suppose.

114/05/31 9:51 This is the last rescue before my current shift ends. The 9 rescued yesterday all survived, though 3 are still hospitalized. These 12 were in better condition. I find that many of these capsuleer pilots exist simply for the pleasure of their violence. What happens in the heart of a man to make him only a machine for killing?
I also confiscated a small number of hybrid weapons and ammo yesterday during my patrol shift.

What was thought by 4 slavers to be a well planned sales excursion into Caldari space, turned into disaster for them, the guard hounds they brought along and the slaves they intended to sell illegally. Capsuleer pilots don't necessarily care to fulfill their promises to complete the trip if they perceive the risk to great or find greater profit elsewhere.
37 people were saved in this rescue and 9 hounds will be retrained as service dogs through our vocational program.
I am currently in Mamenkhanar having arrived here to receive a group of homeless people. Later today, after I discover a bit more about them, I will bring them to one of our homeless shelters. We maintain permanent homeless shelters at all 7 of our offices. No homeless are turned away. The homeless are often shuttled from station to station and just left without food, clothing, or shelter. In some places, the homeless problem is becoming catastrophic. We want to remind the community the we will receive any homeless into our shelters.
We wish to thank the pilot who took the time to care for these homeless and to seek us out to provide a place for them. Thank you.

I have three days of reporting to catch up on. Below are the logged times of each rescue followed by the relevant information for each. The second rescue involved six vitoxin infected slaves. the vitic was jettisoned in a separate can by the same pilot. An afterthought perhaps seeing as Vitoc is legal to transport in both the Empire and the State. We are glad for the vitoc to treat these slaves. The supply is ample for some time.

A late afternoon patrol; actually a patrol that I did on a hunch and not part of my duty schedule, saved these lives. Slaves and slaver alike were surprised to be alive at the end of this day. People who find themselves in a death can expect to die. Death is an equalizer, at least for non-capsuleers. I will be joining our Matriculants for food and drink just as soon as I post this.

Yesterday's patrol shift found 97 people in need of rescue. I have received a summons from the Elders of my people. I will be leaving for Eldulf soon and Ston will be covering most patrol shifts in my absence. From the beginning, we have faced the issue of never being able to cover every death can in every part of space. With every rescue comes an awareness of those we fail to rescue. This is a necessary grief of our work.

I went on my assigned patrol a short time ago and soon came across a death can with 50 souls aboard. I began heading toward the can, checked for the presence of the pilot in system. Alerted the crew to prepare for rescue. Then it happened as it always does; the strange emotional pain. I have tried to figure out exactly what it is I feel at these times. Once the rescued people are on board, I feel relief for them. Once they are back at the center and I know they are well, I feel happiness. But there is that other feeling that lingers. It is best discribed as a persistent sadness. Today, it dawned on me. That feeling begins when I record the offending pilot information.
Diminished Humanity! That's it! That is the feeling I feel. Every time a pilot discards humans into space to die, he or she becomes less human themselves. They empty themselves of more and more of what I value as good. Capsuleers often self-attribute in lofty ways. "We are trans-human, etc." I personally do not believe any such tripe. However, I do believe that capsuleers who dump people into space are becoming in-human. That is a reason for sadness.

114/06/13, 20:25 Who is free? It is a question I often ponder in this work and one that has been endlessly debated here and other places. However, in spite of all the debate, opinions continue across the spectrum. For many of the slaves we rescue, the experience of liberty is not the first experience of freedom. These are free spirits, many of them, even though they be under the yoke of slavery. Their new-found liberty being the realization of minds and wills already inwardly free.
Perhaps some of the least free individuals I have met are capsuleer pilots whose obsession with control and defensiveness over it shows their internal bondage. I have seen the paradox time and again. The powerless possess the power of freedom. The powerful lack the power of freedom and languish in bondage.
We have seen slavers take their first real breaths of freedom when rescued and no longer "able" to trade slaves. Yes, some though not all literally sigh in relief. Others find it as a matter of time. It is also a delight to rescue many already free spirits and see them continue on in life possessing the many other blessings of liberty.

The weak intellect seeks to enslave others; to limit their self-expression and growth lest it expand beyond his own. The spiritually weak seek to enslave others; to control their spiritual development and growth lest it grow into forms that challenge the status-quo of the enslaver. The culturally frozen seek to enslave others; to decimate the different lest their own culture seem small compared to the cultures of others. But, the indomitable human spirit is not easily enslaved and at the end of the day something remains that can come alive again and reform what the enslaver sought to destroy.

Even though there is vehement disagreement over the values and causes for which people fight and even though I am a functional pacifist, I respect (sometimes) those who with honor take up arms and fight, even kill to defend values they believe to be moral and good. I have met many such pilots who would kill each other in such causes. While I find occasion to respect such individuals, I find no occasion to respect those who in greed and cowardice, dump helpless people to die in space. What noble value could possibly be pretended to justify such a deed. None, I grant you. It is for this reason, we assign such individuals to the "Wall of Shame."

I'm back at the temp center waiting for the agro timer to count down, so it is a good time to file my report for the last shift. I am grieved as are many to read of the massive murder of an Obelisk full of slaves in transit. We will keep our focus on those who are yet alive and can be helped. I am also reminded of the gratuitous violence prevalent in this cluster; violence for sport regardless of the cost of life. I am happy to report that I have had occasion recently to confiscate a bit of weaponry and ammunition. It shall be stored unto the end of my time.

What one can do: Take action to prevent one life from being abused, enslaved, killed hurt, etc. What one can do: Refuse to throw up your arms because the task is too great. Instead do what you can to help even one person, free one person, care for one person. One of today's rescues was a one person rescue. There are few sight more joyful than the sight of one person, very alone, who discovers that they will not die alone, at least, not today.

I am on my way back to the temp center from a rescue of 26 people who were in a death can labelled "free slaves." There is a lot of traffic in this area, yet no one had picked up these people even though the invitation was there and the can blued to make it risk free. Why? It is because there are no stations in this system and the the traffic is mostly flowing into State space. Everyone who saw that can knew that there were people inside and that in less than two hours, they would die horribly. Yet no one can take the time to stop, rescue them and take them back only one system to shelter and care.
DSTON can't rescue every person in every death can. It is logistically impossible. This is the bitterness of our work. I take consolation though in the thankful faces of these 26 people.
As per my policy, I no longer list the names of those pilots who choose to blue their death cans. I still label it a wall of shame though for there is no excuse.
