C'mon! You can't say the lure to be a stygian assassin or ranger to waste all the Clonans of the worlds doesn't tickle your fancy.

Have they opened up the main game yet or is the beta still limited to the singleplayer introduction areas?
I'm seriously tired of MMORPGs (Eve being the exception), but Conan is doing too much new stuff for me to ignore it :P

My beta client should opefully have finished downloading by now, so will be waiting when I finish work. Finding 30GB of space to install the monster will be more challenging, but I'm looking foward to having a sneak peek before release in just over a week's time. I have the main game on order, so will have a play for a month. Since my interest in Eve faded I've not really gotten it back, though my character is still training. Tried, liked and left WoW, play CoV on occasion, but not had a good MMO experience for a while now. Hoping this will give me my fix, at least tiil Warhammer Online :) -------------

The Game We Shall Not Mention and Age of Conan do not cater to the same audience. They do not play they same way and they break the mold in different directions.
That doesn't mean that there won't be people playing both, migrating between them or jumping ship, but because they are different games in a market full of clones it means there's room for both and they do not compete directly. I forgot what I was going to argue so I'll stop typing right here.

The only thing about AoC that caught my interest so far is the fact that Funcom develops it and it's a bit more adult-themed than most other MMORPGs, which hopefully means less kids.
I also hope there'll be a roleplaying-PvP-server to get rid off the "I R teh 1337 PvP r0xx0r"-crowd.
The blood-token-****-pvp-grind-currency-crap they introduced some while ago is also a major turnoff. Needs moar UO or EvE-sytle. You die, you lose something.
And it doesn't contain enuogh nudity / sexism for a Conan franchise game. ;_; Yes, I'm serious. :3
I'll wait around 1 year after its release before I consider trying it. Most MMORPGs contain a lot of awful bugs and exploits in the beginning and I have no intention of paying for beta-testing it. ;3
It might be a nice game to waste some time on until the WoD-hype from CCPs new gamey begins (for me, that is). :O

If you got a preorder key the offer of early access is gone for english players. You still get those preorder items but the chance to play early is sold out. I went and got a CC for this early access only to find it was sold out. The thing thats irritating is the way they marketed it to everyone, knowingly over selling the preorder product.
While Funcom have potentially a game that can be successful it will really boil down to how they treat customers.
I forseer alot of flames heading Funcons way.

Your in luck fella!
There are 3 servers, one is a PVE, one a PVP and one a RPPVP. And you cannot switch between the servers without creating a new character.

I'm exited about it, though I have other things to do atm such as exams. Quick question, if you buy it from a store will you still have to download all that 26g? Will it be even availble in stores?
Though i'm not really sure I will go over to it permanently when EvE still gives me so much enjoyement, Why join a newish community when I can stay here and enjoy this great one.
I do hope it wakes a few WoW players up that their game is flawed and ****e. I'm even trying to get them to play AoC instead of WoW if they dont like EvE.

I've been playing it a bit, am interested to see the same game when it goes live. For fear of breaking the NDA, I've had a look around the official site and at TenTonHammer to see what information has already been made public. Without going into detail, my views so far bearing in mind that I'm looking at a Beta...
- The GFX, even on max, aren't as great as I had expected. I realise it's an MMO so bandwidth and performance is an issue, but was under the impression it would be significantly better. Again, Beta so I shan't draw any conclusions from it. I'm not talking about artifacts, glitches or shadows, but actual textures.
- Music/Voice acting are extremely high quality and add a lot of atmosphere. I'm guessing the voice acting is a contributory factor to the game's humungous size. The SFX aren't as impressive. Walking around from soil to concrete to a stream to wood is cool, but otherwise PCs sound quite generic and with 5.1 speakers set up and configured, they come out of the wrong channel, which can be very disconcerting. This is annoying in combat areas as I'm always turning to look for the archer who just shot me from the left, but he's standing on my right. Again, Beta...
- General MMO stuff is as you'd expect. Quests and journal, fetch 3 of x for NPC y, kill random monsters for z, etc. The level up system is very WoW-esque. Skills/Abilities you get by class, feats you choose with points you get when you level. Ressurection is same as WoW.
- The classes are very cool. You have the generic Rogue/Assassin, Tank, the Archer and the Healbot, but the others are all quite cool and offer a fun twist on the standard ATs. They range from a demonic shapeshifter (like a WoW druid) to a minion manipulator (CoV Mastermind, or maybe drone dominix?) and after a handful of lvls you already start to see differences between them. The character customisation options are not phenomenal, but more than I've seen in most other games and worthy of praise.
- The races serve no huge difference, kinda like Eve. There are some things that are affected by your race (most significantly, available class choices) but not many. Sadly not like the Alliance/Horde divide WoW has.
- The combat system is heavily touted as unique and different, which it certainly is, but I'm not sure if it's for the better. You use the keyboard to attack in different 'directions' and to execute special 'combo' moves (which require a 2nd attack to complete). What I've so far found is that I'm just button mashing, as it's really complex to control all the attacks, combos, moving, targetting, etc. Even the direction you're facing makes a difference, which means wasting attacks with slow recharges because I wasn't quite looking right at him. I realise it's an intended mechanic and won't change on the Live server and hope that it gets easier and more intuitive in time, but doubt it.
There's a place for this kind of "twitch" gaming perhaps, like in shooters, racers and action-oriented games but I don't think it works in this sort of context (and certainly not with the sheer number and variety of abilities that a generic MMO character will aquire). WoW/Eve/CoX have the right idea here. You have the same factors in all of them (buffs that help/harm the combatants, range, different abilities/attacks with pros/cons at different ranges, movement speed) but don't have to actually search space for your wingman before you can use your remote armour repairer on him. Time will tell anyway, a week till live so -------------

Very interesting :) It's the city building / city siege and combat system that has me excited about Conan.
Reading your preview I get the impression that the combat system will suffer from the same "problem" as Eve's gameplay mechanics: Ie that people indoctrinated with consensual pvp come here expecting one thing and can't quite wrap their heads around the aggressive PvP.
You seem to describe the melee system in a manner suggesting it fails to be as user friendly as the tried & proven skill-hotkey system. I'm guessing that is some of the point with their melee, that it isn't supposed to be like it's always been and that with practice it'll become second nature just like a CoH/CoV attack chain. ..hopefully. If they messed it - I think up most of the attraction in Conan is lost :P
