Welll, i can't but praise CCP's commitment to improving Galllente gameplay by improving their weapons...
They just hired BAE Systems to build a real-life electromagnetic railgun that shots a 18kg projectile at some 2500 m/s, with a impact energy of 32 gigajoules. They're covering it as a US Navy project, but don't be fooled, it's CCP behind the scenes...
Real Navy railgun test shot
(In case you wonder where do come from those flames if the weapon doesn't uses any explosive, well, apparently those flames are overheated air from inside the barrel) EVE residents: 5% Wormholes; 8% Lowsec; 20% Nullsec; 67% Highsec. CSM 6: 100% Nullsec residents.

For those of you uninformed. Thats the production version in the first post. The second link features the prototype which fired over a thousand times without melting rails. Currently the gun can safely deheat every 20 seconds or so giving it a firing rate of 3 times a minute.
So progress definetly as long as Obama doesn't cancel it.

And their puiting it on this guy. (mind you wiki was the only sight that had the ships wepons in the artical)
The DDG 1000.
the two 155mm guns are to be replace with the railguns as soon as the U.S. develops an air burst triger that can survive the accel created by the gun.
the thing also has 80 VLS missils, so it's actualy more Caldari than Gallente Those who wish to end War wish to end what it means to be human. Those who advocate War do not know its power. Yet Those who learn from War will be remembered for all time.

I guess they plan firing lasers at incoming projectiles...

What's your source on the 1000+ shots for the railgun?
That's quite a big leap as normally rails (at least, DIY ones) only last for 2-3 shots at a push.
I ask because alongside actually powering it (easy for the US Navy with their nuclear powered vessels), rail degredation is the biggest hurdle for working rail guns.
(NB, if it were a coilgun, which is a different type of EM weapon, I could easily believe 1000+ shots, but it's not a coilgun) |

I wished I can find the source Naval Research Press Releases are like... needles in the hay stack to refind. I would recommend trying the developing companies involved. I belive it was the press release declaring they are about to start to construct the production version and mentioned about the power system.

totally unrelated note, I can see coilguns becoming the next handguns while railguns will become the new cannon/artillery weapons, since coilguns, while more reliable and easier to carry about, need to have an extremely long chain of coils to achieve the same projectile speed as a railgun. Rail degradation is usually the result of a massive current running through rails that can't handle it. I kind of liken it to loading a cannon with powder, the more you use, the more damage it will do to the firing device. There are plenty of University made rail guns that last for dozens of firings once the class gets the right output going. |

right output and right materials
granted however, friction heat is also one of the major problems, but that's nothing that a decent cooling system can't resolve.

It's half and half.
Rail degredation is not due to general heat/current as such, it's down to arcing, which erodes the rail surface. From my knowledge, there's always going to be some arcing, it's just a question of how much.
Personally, although possibly expensive, I forsee the stopgap to a combat usable system being the projectiles coming with their own length of rail in one "shell", as you don't actually need a big rail to get the projectiles up to speed, especially if you're only designing it for one shot before replacing it.

Mebbe. Not too sure though as I think it's going to require some more exotic materials than current firearms are made of which might make them far too expensive to make, not to mention massive advances in capacitance, battery and miniturised power generation in order to even get close to chemical reaction based weapons in temrs of energy efficiency. |

well it took us some 600+ years in firearms development to reach today's level. EM weapons are really quite infant still in comparison.
