my question would be who the heck runs the Stargates? are they just big automated gates like an EZ-Pass lane on the Jersey Turnpike or are they staffed an run like an Airport control tower lining up ships for arrive and depart.
i tend to think its CONCORD since well they seem to have fingers in everyone's pies, so why not run the Turnpike as well.

I'd expect empire-built stargates to be operated by the empires, though possibly under heavy regulation by CONCORD. Some stargates might be operated by individual corporations, but not all of those are public (see "the Blockade" mission).
Also, you might be intrested to read the description of the Deklein region.

Some more recently build Stargates might also run by automated controls. At least the recent story of project Aria that is connected to the opening of the drone regions, suggests so.

I am no lore expert, but I will share what I have read.
As far as I understand, stargates are pretty self-sufficient and can run for "several dozens" of years before having to be recalibrated.
As for who does the maintainance on them? You've got me. Perhaps the recalibration can be performed remotely using the FTL transmission system.
I would think it would be the duty of the current owner of a stargate to maintain it. There are plenty of Amarr gates in caldari space, for instance. I would think the caldari would maintain the gates in their space, regardless of origin.

There's evidence in several chronicles on EON and on this site that the stargates are indeed crewed with teams that operate and maintain them.
I believe they're owned and operated by their respective empires (hence there being racial types of technology) but are under the juristiction of CONCORD, the DED and the SCC.

Edited by: Pottsey on 14/05/2008 11:36:34 Crew work on the gates and did you know gate travel effects certain animals and makes them more aggressive? I wonder if it effects pod pilots as well. One Eon chronicle is all about the people who work and live on gates. Those traffic advisoryÆs you get are from the people working on the gates.

I believe that I have seen something saying that pod pilots are less susceptable to the ill effects of frequent jumps than regular crews are.
That doesn't bode well for the crews of capsuleer piloted ships, but hey, they have short life expectancy anyways. . . . ________________________________ This is not a signature. |

im sure its a lonely job though to work on a gate unless they have a crew of thousands, i could also see them as being considered the most haunted of still functional structures. i mean they are definatly old and who knows how many never made it to the other side or get killed as they emerge from the vortex into an 0.0 system yet some ops rules prevent you from posting a notice to all travelers.

If there are indeed crews aboard the jumpgates, some 'practicality' questions come to mind: - who supplies them? (food, meds, fuels, parts, etc.) and why do we never see these supply ships? - what do they think of gate campers who would attack these supply ships?

i bet nobody attacks those supply ships. would you want to travel through a stargate after you just blew up the badger that was brining beer to the crew? trust me im sure their Oops and your ship not coming out the destination gate wouldnt go noticed at all and probally not even reported.

You'll probably be barred from using any of the stargate network, so unless you have a ship capable of using jump drives, you're stranded in the system.
Of course as Viktor mentioned, your ship and pod could be destroyed in a stargate 'malfunction' during transit (you probably wouldn't be able to use your medical clone, as it's doubtful any information will be successfully transmitted), although I prefer them just jumping you to the empty space between the systems.
Assuming there's only 1 light year distance for you to get back to a system, a 13.5AU/sec interceptor would take about 15.5 minutes of constant warping to get back.
