thats it in a nutshell man, eve isn't a single player game
All i am saying to you is don't bother. I made like a dozen of remove local threads , usually on a Thursday and all you get is go to wow or whatever.
EVE needs more REALITY. less ****ty game play and random technology that no one knows how it came to be.

Everyone knows there are some things about local that are less than optimal, but a simple removal would make things far worse.
Currently local helps both the hunter and the hunted as both get the same info at the same time. The hunter of.c. says that helps the hunted too much, and the hunted says it helps the hunter too much. This in itself seems to indicate that the system isn't terribly wrongly balanced.
Any real 'solution' would have to encompass far more systems than just local itself. Mainly it would have to look at the profitability balance between highsec, lowsec and 0.0. Currently, low-sec and 0.0 are NOT profitable enough for people to loose ships in any significant number there ratting/mining/missioning/exploring! From this of.c. follows that if local was just removed, the advantage switches to the hunter, meaning the people hunted would just go do L4's in highsec. Nobody wins from that scenario.
So, until CCP makes a major balance change in rewards (which I don't think will ever happen as the majority of customers are in highsec), any wishes for local to be simply removed are just a pipedream....

IIRC local was gone for less than an hour or so and was the result of a botched patch deployment... Evidence? I've said this before. Give me a petition of this "large proportion". Also there are more than ample other threads to read up on all changes wanted.

Just put local on delayed mode, that should relieve the stress on the servers some, and give any potential assailants a moment to find prey. Anyone who has been in local for long enough will show up there, and anyone just jumping in will have a 10-15 second delay before showing up.
Sounds good to me.

Everyone says "Remove local, remove players, remove numbers" but why not increase local to cover the entire constallation? That way, you know there are bad guys/victims in the vicinity, but you don't know if they are in this particular system. So "good guy" know when to start spamming scan or log on the gate scout and the "bad guy" knows when it will pay off to start scanning the entire system.
Ofcourse the amount of chat'n'spam will be a strain on the chat channel, but I bet CCP can find a way to handle that.

Edited by: gyt on 15/05/2008 10:57:51 If local is removed all the carebears in 0.0 will jsut go to empire. And only the pvp people will be about in 0.0.
Though i think local being removed in non sov systems would be a good idea at least. And in sov systems it should have a little delay say 2mins for sov 1 1min for sov 2 30secs for sov 3 and no deleay for sov 4(though this is only for the space holding allaince)so pirates will have to use probers etc to find the targets etc. Though there could also be a pos modual which makes it so ure allaince can use local like with the sov system. 4 lvls of this kind of modual. Each lvl has the same effects of the sov lvl so lvl 1 versoin of this mod = sov 1 but this mods are expensvie range from 500mill to 5bill or something 5bill for the lvl 4 500mill for the lvl 1 version. This will still inculde risk v reward as you are risking a 5bill mod to be able to see local etc.
Also i think low sec should be made like sov 2 so has a 1min delay.

As of today, the smart ones <pirates / carebears> are surviving - only the stupid ones are getting ganked - which nicely fits into my view of a "Harsh world".
What OP is proposing is making sure that smart carebears also get ganked by noob pirates. Because I have never seen a real ganker gang have any problems with popping targets. <Just look at tri / burn eden kill boards>. Its only that noob gang which fits cloaks on their taranis's and try to run through as many belts as possible without any idea of scanning etc. that gets back home with empty hands.
As many pointed out before, this <delays/removal> helps only the pirates / gankers.
I don't have any problems with that as is - but we should be mindful of the fact that now we need to post a watch on each gate into the system - because a decent cov. ops can find out the ships using probes in like 20-25 seconds. Meaning the mining ops will be a thing of yesterday.
Don't come back here to cry when everything you want is twice the price it was, because now mining requires more people/alts, who are not actually mining
The only solution I see is a way for intel without spamming scan / posting alts in all gates. how ccp will do it, I don't know.

What happened during the mentioned event was that it was (after a couple of hours) brutally clear that it gave the attacker an overwhelming advantage.
The attacker only had to jump in, scan once or maybe a couple of times to see if there were any targets. The defender had to continuously press the scan button every 5 seconds.

Could they remove the little icons next to the names that tell you if theyre red, blue, corp etc, just in local. That way it might be like before, when you saw someone in local and had to check for yourself who they were.

Edited by: Jakke Logan on 15/05/2008 13:10:42 Edited by: Jakke Logan on 15/05/2008 13:08:43 My ideas for fixing local:
1. Name list appears only in empire space. This could be refined, however, to show names only to those with decent standing towards the empire entity that holds sov, and could also, by design, show the names to everyone of those who have BAD standings towards the entity that hold sov. Ie: If you have great Caldari standing, the government will share this info with you.
In 0.0 space names appear to members of the entity with sov in the system (ie: if your alliance owns the space, the gates "register" who enters and lets you know). In space where there is no sov held, no names appear to anyone until sov is taken. My reasoning for this is that if you own the space, you are going to know who is in your space.
2. Names don't appear for purpose built cloak ships (covert ops, stealth bombers, recons, black ops) when cloaked, but do for everyone else.
3. The local tab will tell you how many are in system, always.

Seriously, the whole ordeal with local, is being able to see EVERY player in system. This isn't good, makes intel less important (to the ratters i see daily who safe spot and cloak). Its an easy change, and one i could see being done with minimal changes.
*puts on flame suit*
Gee, the Devs were looking at this... what? 6 months ago was it?
Idea with I approve of was see noone in local except wartargets and corpmates/alliance members. Possibly with postitive standing guys able to tick an option to show in local to you.
This would work nicely, but unfortunetely it would make lowsec 10 times more dangerous, so they can't do it unless they stop asteroid belts being bookmarks. They've already added lowsec rats that use more ewar and scrambling recently.
And as such with making belts something you have to explore a bit to find, makes macrominers lives more difficult, another pro.
But yeah, this is/was already being looked at.

NO!
<rant> It doesn't make sense that a virtual world based on spaceships and other technological advances doesn't have a way to "see" every active ship in a solar system.
You (and everybody else asking to nerf local), are asking CCP to make your pirating easier. There are plenty of dumb capsuleers around that are either AFK or don't pay attention to local. You need to "WORK" to find them.
PIRATING IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EASY. Only the best pirates, the ones that work hard (and are a little lucky) should get the big loots... survival of the fittest.
If you want easy loot just go to a belt of any system < 0.9 and kill some NPC rats. </rant> --- "There is no lag in Jita, NEVER!" - Iraqi Information Minister |

Really Ale? it doesn't male sense that internet spaceships should be able to see EVERYONE (COUGH ONBOARD SHIP SCANNER)
So your local chat window you use to see people needs to stay as it is?
Do you really think it's fair, for people like me, having a name beginning with the number 5, having a severe disadvantage in an empire war being at the top of the list in EVERY LOCAL.

Reason not to remove local.
Eve is set in the future, with higher technology, wouldn't the ships have something equivalent to radar that automatically sweeps the system for targets? If you get on a modern U.S. navy ship, they have automated radar that has visual and audible alarms with no user input involved, in fact you have to turn the alarms off manually!
Just think of local as radar :)) Padraig Oriley Chief Operations Officer Republic of Texas |

Do these navy radars give the names and addresses of the enemy crews of the enemy ships they pick up?
I don't want local removed, dont get me wrong, it's part of it being a multiplayer game being able to converse with the local system population altogether at will, but it needs to change... A LOT.

If so, I'm curious about how a sensor-boosted heavy interdictor produced from a tech 2 BPO would best use warp core stabilisers to counter five titans and a cyno jammer, while desynced and dealing with lag. Also, when it gets ganked by evil wardec-dodging pirates and the pilot gets get 50 billion ISK removed from their wallet by CCP, what exactly do BoB and Goons intend to do about it? --------------- ""Minimum collateral damage" and "Entire star system" do not belong in the same sentence." |

ok ok, look i'm a pirate so i would love to see local foetsi. However, as a pirate myself i see the benefits of local.
Anyways.. local or no local... CCP i want the alt back. I mean scanning used to be hard enough without alt, and now alt is gone... it just seems a bit unfair for all us griefing piwates... because remember.. we are players too :p
