This is a story about my character's childhood. I wasn't sure where to post it, but this place seemed "ok". It's one of my first serious attempts at "Fan Fiction" and should be treated as such. The use of the english language may be rough at times. But I hope you can see past that.
Chapter I : Disappointment
Grek Forto was a regular child. Nine years old, brown hair and full of energy. He lived on a mining colony with his parents Gerek and Elana Forto. The mining colony was the home of sevenhundred hardworking minerfamilies, Grek's familiy included. There also lived an additional threehundred teachers, doctors, technicians and other needed personnel. At eight in the "morning", a signal sounded and the colony started to wake up. The colonies steel construction made a sound of creaking metal. But it was to common to worry about, and besides, everybody was busy eating breakfast and getting dressed for work to even remotly care about it. All of the mining barges where supposed to be in space within two hours after the wakeup call. Grek's father was the chief of engineering on the Covetor-class mining barge Ascentii and his mother was a mining foreman, supervising the daily mining operations and the starbase control tower. Grek himself was ready for school. At least that was what his parents thought. He almost never went to school. Instead, he spent most of his time exploring the colony megastructure, traversing outside the living spaces and into the unknown. He had his own "lodge" where he had a window to view the space and asteroids outside. There he used to sit and watch the lightshow that the mining lasers produced when striking the surface of the asteroids, also glancing at the stars, figuring out the most wide range of lifes complex nature.
"Okay Grek, now go to school, Mom will be home by six and then she wants to find you in bed, sleeping, can you do that for her?" Gerek told Grek while adjusting his Light Hazard Suit. "Yes Dad, I'll be home at six...but..." Grek didn't finish the sentence before his mom stepped inside the room and interrupted. "Not but's...you know it's dangerous running around the colony all by yourself!" His mom told him in a sharp, but warm tone. Grek stared at his mom. He knew it was pointless to say otherwise...
This particular day Grek actually went to school. It was a special day because they had visit by a real Caldarian military officer. He was there to tell the senior kids about how recruiting to the State War Academy worked. But Grek only wanted to catch a glimpse of him. Grek highest dream was that of becoming a spaceship pilot. Cramped between the medical facility and a department store inside a large biodome, the school was probably the building in most need of maintenance in the whole colony, but since there was only a few students of every grade, the administrator didn't see the need for a renovation. Grek stood infront of the entrance, nervous about how the his teacher would react to his "comeback". He decided not to go in, instead he would peak trough the windows of the classroom on the back of the school.

"...and so the academy focuses to improve your own abilities but also learn you new ones...". When Grek looked trough the window, the officer had already started inform the senior students about the good things that the academy had to offer. "...as your skill improves, you'll get more advanced challenges so that your...". The officer talking was tall, but with a round face and an ugly moustache, he wasn't like the officer that Grek had imagined. He imagined a tall and muscular, high ranking man, but the man standing inside had one yellow stripe on his uniform which didn't even had a full set of buttons. Grek jumped down from the container he needed to stand on to be able to look inside the room. His expression was clearly dissappointed. Suddenly he got an idea. Even though the officer wasn't as grand as he imagined, he would still need a ship to get to the colony, and a spaceship was always something cool to see. Everything was quiet. A light creak was heard, then silenced. Grek stood infront of the main elevator that went straight down to the hangars. He was looking around himself impatient, watching for adults that would shove him back to the living spaces if they saw him. This part of the colony was off limits to everybody except the miners and occasional guests. After what seemed like a whole day, the "ding" sound of the elevator sounded and Grek jumped into the shadows to make sure no one was inside the elevator. When the coast was clear he jumped in and pressed the 1 button. After a while, the elevator came to a halt. The doors opened and Grek put out his head to look for any other people. This suspicion had saved him many times before, and he expected it to save him many times more. He stepped out of the elevator into a brigthly lit but rusty metal corridor. He took a left, then a right, and a left again. After many turns he realised that he was lost. There was voices in the distant, but Grek could not locate their origins. While he listened for any clues to where they might come from, he sat down on the metal bar floor. A tear fell down his cheek, but he tried to keep himself from crying. He'd been climbing, crouching and running around this colony for years, there was a way to get the hangar, and some confusing corridors wasn't going to stop him from finding it. "Hey pal, you seem lost..." A female voice said. Grek wiped his eyes from tears and looked up. There stood a young girl, dressed in an orange mechanics overall and her black hair tied in a knot. She stretched her hand forward for Grek to grab and stand on his feet. "What are you doing in this part of the colony" The girl asked him. Grek opened his mouth and tried to say something, but the only thing he could bring forth was tears. All he wanted was to be with any one of his parents right now. He closed his eyes so that his tears wouldn't show but even so, he made a crying noise. He felt the girl giving him a hug, and all he felt right now was to hug her back, and he did.

Edited by: Grek Forto on 17/05/2008 23:17:08 a "What the hell is going on here!?!?!" It was the sound of a male with a hoarse voice shouting. The girl stopped hugging Grek and he watched in the direction of the shouting. It was a big, muscular man holding a wrench in his hand. With a red tank top and white pants covered in oil stains. He stood silent looking at Grek and the girl. "Kena, what's this boy standing there crying for!!!" The man told the girl, who's name obiviously was Kena, yet again shouting. "He...I think he's lost, I found him here...crying..." Kena didn't have time to speak before the man slapped her across the face so hard that she fell over. "...and you did what?! Gave him a hug?! Boys, let alone men, in the Caldari State doesn't cry!!!". He took a firm grip on Grek's shirt collar and pushed him up the wall. "Are you a man boy?" He asked Grek in a surprisingly peaceful manner. Grek opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted when the man started to shout again..."Men in the Caldari State are unselfish, and crying...is...a...SELFISH...ACT!!!" The man threw Grek across the corridor. The only thing Grek heard before his vision got black was Kena's scream and the mans footsteps fading away...
Chapter II : Escape Velocity
The pain was like having a spear penetrating Grek's head. Even though he had what seemed as a wet towel around his head he couldn't help but feel that it was unnessecary since it didn't seem to help. He opened his left eye since the right one was to painful to even think about opening. When the man had sent him flying across the hallway he didn't even have time to react to the blow that struck his head. He imagined that dying was less painful then the suffering he was going trough right now. The bed he was lying on was placed inside what looked like a boilerroom of some sort. It was hot, but he didn't care about the temperature right now. All he wanted was to die, quickly. "Are you okay?" A female voice said. It was Kena. "I guess it's a dumb question. The man who hit you, it was Ohvola. He's a man...overseeing...the ventilation systems. He is, different from other people. He suffers from severe schizophrenia and tends to get violent at times...it makes him switch personalities. I've learn to deal with it, but I guess you got in his line of fire, and i'm terribly sorry for that. I am Kenare by the way, call me Kena". Kena went around a corner and then came back with a cup of someting green for Grek to drink. He tried to sit up, but failed miserably. "I'll try to make you comfortable enough to drink this, but more important is that you lie down". All Grek could think about was about his parents and if he would ever see them again. Of course he would see them again, he told himself. But why hadn't Kena taken him to the medical facility? He fell asleep again."...but what if they come looking for him, it's already late...". Grek woke up when hearing voices. He opened both his eyes with a bit of trouble. All of a sudden he had a chill running down his back. In the room sat the same man that certainly almost killed him, Ohvola. Grek closed his eyes again, hoping that they hadn't noticed him waking up. But it was to late. "Hello boy, I am Ohvola Pianngrei. I am, sorry about hurting you...but you know...". Grek didn't listen to the rest. He mentally sang a song for himself, hoping that he would wake up at home and that all this was only a bad dream. After singing countless songs he realised that this was the reality and no song in the universe could change it. |

"Awake again are you?". It was Kena's voice again, and Grek slowly opened his eyes to check if Ohvola was in the room too. It looked like he wasn't so he made and enourmous effort to sit up straight. "How long have I been here?" Grek asked Kena. "A couple of hours, it's five o'clock in the morning" Kena answered. She continued, "I don't know how to tell you this...But me an Ohvola are leaving this station, and you need to come with us". She closed her eyes after uttering those last three words. Grek's only reaction was to stare at the wall with panels opposite the bed. He watched the blinking panel lights while trying to make sense of what Kena just said. After a couple of hours filled with Grek crying and Kena wandering around in the small bolierroom, Ohvola came trough the door. He approached Grek without saying anything, then all of a sudden he grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the bed and onto a chair. He took a muzzle to hinder Grek from screaming out loud. Then he grabbed a plastic bag from a locker and signaled Kena to walk outside the room before him. When outside the room, Ohvola closed the door which apparently was concealed in the wall for some strange reason. They walked down some stairs and trough a couple of corridor till they came to a halt a small, metal door. Ohvola searched trough the plastic bag and took out a small keycard of some sort that obiviously opened the door when inserted trough a narrow opening in the rustcolored wall. The moment they stepped out trough the door, the colorscheme changed to a gunmetal blue color, and the enviroment became more sterile and cold. Grek watched as the door closed and when he turned around, it was the first time he was so close to a spaceship. Ten meters away from them was a stair up to a platform where a hovering Kestrel-class frigate was parked. Small compared to the mining barges used in mining. Big compared to a human. "Ok Kena, You stay here with the boy while I knock down the guards". Ohvola whispered to Kena. She nodded and withina a few seconds Ohvola crouched while climbing the stairs. He passed over the edge and then Grek heard sounds of flesh hitting flesh. A few seconds passed then Ohvola's hand was visible, signaling Kena to get herself and Grek up the stairs. A faint humming sound was heard when standing inside the spaceship. Grek had no idea what it was, only that it had an intoxicating effect on him. He began to feel drowsy. Kena closed the double hatches isolating the interior of the ship form the hazardous enviroment of cold space. Ohvola went in the other direction towards the bridge. After five minutes Grek and Kena heard Ohvola shout for them to buckle in and prepare for takeoff. The ship began to shake as the thrusters activated and took the ship outside the atmosphere of the hangar array of the colonies backside. Grek looked trough a viewport as the colony slowly disappeared. A tear fell down his cheek. Didn't anyone notice they're takeoff? Anyone...? When almost all hope was extinguished he saw a light. A big ship was approaching the frigate fast. He looked to see if Ohvola hade noticed it...He had. "Oh no, your're not getting me this time!". He said to himself while trying to maneuver the frigate between the asteroids. Grek listened as Ohvola accepted hailings from the other ship..."Pilot of the stolen Kestrel-class frigate, this is the Moa-class cruiser Icthi of the Caldari Navy, you are ordered to shut down everything except life support and get to a full halt or we will". Ohvola turned of the transmission. "Hmm, we'll see about that, Kena...boy. Prepare for Warp". Grek turned his head and saw the cruiser lining up beside the frigate. But when Ohvola initiated warp, the cruiser disappeared and they we're gone...
