So I am a fairly new pilot (about 3.3mil SP) and I fly a plated Vexor setup for PvP normally.
4x Small Blasters 1x Small Nos
1x MWD 1x Webber 1x 20km Scram
1x 1600mm Tungsten Plate 2x EANM 1x DC II
5x Hammerhead II 5x Warrior II 5x Some Random T1 Light Drone
...is my usual setup. I have found that while it eats frigates alive and easily dispatches some cruisers such as Stabbers or Carcals, Rupturesand Thoraxes just eat me alive. Every time I try to get in close and lock up one of these bad boys, I can get them into low armor or structure but never before they pop me first. Is there some strategy anyone can recommend that would give me more of an edge against? Do I need to modify my fit so I can kite them longer while drones do the damage? Should I fit drones that do explosive damage since they are usually armor tanked? Do I just need to be patient and wait until I have the SP to fit bigger blasters and take more damage and can overheat my guns? I was thinking about trying a fit like this:
5x Medium/Small Rails (whatever fits) with ammo that gives me an optimal of around 15km
1x MWD 1x 20km Scram 1x Cap Injector
2x Nano 2x Overdrive
Same Drones
...this way I could kite around close range gunships like the Ruppy and Rax. The big issue I see is once they get me into web range just once, I am stuck and easily killed.
Any comments/suggestions/flames/advice?

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 19/05/2008 14:33:45 Your first setup is solid. I can't recall wether the Vexor has more then 50m3 of drone bandwidth, though. If it has 75m3, then use two heavies, two mediums and a light, gives you more total DPS.
Ruptures and Thoraxes are always going to be non-trivial to kill, of course, but I find that I approach really experiences Vexor pilots with a lot of care when piloting a Rupture.
At 3.3M SP, there's a lot of room for improvement; be sure to get the relevant drone skills (and your gallente cruiser skill) to IV for starters.

Edited by: McHaul on 19/05/2008 14:39:28 Sorry I accidentally posted on an alt. This is my real character here.
I do have Drones V and Drone Interfacing IV and Gallente Cruiser IV so my drone damage is pretty good. Drones are what I have focused a majority of my SP on so far.
EDIT: Agh nevermind I have no idea how to change the char I am posting with. These forums ******* suck.

ruptures and thoraxes are the "kings of the hill" in 0-5km. but you are using drones so its not realy needed to be that close. Against those damage dealers you should try to keep distance as more time you can, try to orbit mwdiing at 15km and let the drones do their job, and allow him to come close only when he is partly down..
its not that easy, but each second drones hit him and he don't hit you raise your chance of success. The ruppy is even more faster so i realy dunno is you will be able to avoid some damage.
I would have 8 meds and 7 lights. You need to backup your damage dealers if you plan to not come close.
another option is to raise your dps using 2 heavy drones: 2x ogresII ( heavy) 2x hamemrheads ( medium) 1x hobgoblins (light)

I definitely see your point. I was kicking myself yesterday when I scanned down a Thorax in a belt and warped to 0 on him. Halfway through the warp I was asking myself why I didn't warp to 30km or something first so I could lock and engage with drones before he was ever in range.
The only problem with using the T2 Ogre's is that I do not have access to T2 heavies and I am not sure I want to spend the time training them. Is it really that big of a DPS increase? How come everyone tends to only use Gallente drones for DPS? I realize they have the highest damage multiplier but don't damage types effect anything?
P.S. Ok I figured out how to post with the right character. Yes I am a newb. ----- http://evenewb.blogspot.com/ |

1 heavy damage = 2x med damage = 4x light damage
so: 2x heavy + 2x med + 1x light = 6,5x mediums
in other words.. they they are worth... even 2x t1 heavy are better than 2x t2 med. but you have to consider that to be able to use them well your hopponent sould be webber. so the thing is:
mwd to 0km -> web + scramble --> heavy drones are ok
OR
keep range -> drones are slow ... enemy not webbed .. NO BACKUP DRONES -> heavies not ok
edit: forgot the enchanged drone capability .. you have some spare drones even with 2 heavies in bay .. but still the reply is valid.

Its simple, unless you know the specific weakness of your enemies tank, then the only two drones worth considering are explosive or thermal.
Reasons being that thermal drones just plain have the highest 1.x damage modifier of them all, and the exp drones do a difficult-to-tank type of damage and are the fastest drones in their class.
Sentry drones present some different opinions, but within the normal drone range if you dont know what your opponent is packing, bring exp or therm drones :)

Actually, it is like this:
1x heavy = 2x mediums = 3.2x light damage
Smaller drones always give more dps per m3 than equivalent larger ones.
A full set of t2 hammerheads = 115,2 base damage Mix with t1 ogres and a hobgoblin = 137,3 base damage
I'd easily trade ~10% dps for a few spare drones or a set of light ECMs though.

Damage types do matter. Thermal is overall the lowest resist between shields and armor (2nd best damage vs shields, 3rd vs armor, most resists around 30%) so it's my preferred default damage type when I have the choice. Gallente drones do thermal damage, so really there's no contest for DPS.

Ironically enough, I actually ran into one of the Thorax pilots who killed me the other night and caused me to post this thread. I caught him in a belt and this time warped in at 30km as opposed to 0km on the belt. I attempted to kite him around using my MWD and Web and I took virtually no damage while my drones ripped him apart. Unfortunately his ECM drones broke my lock before I could finish him and he escaped. The moral of the story is though:
