Edited by: SaintSIN on 23/05/2008 19:25:41 Ok it isnĘt exactly 1 rank by itself but when you put 2 Caldari ranks together and make a composite you get something that might resemble something from the past?

Elite = Game
If I remember correctly, a lot of the devs played Elite before developing EVE. Didn't the original EVE logo look a lot like that? ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

Hah! That CAN'T be a coincidence..however... it does lend credibility to the fact that the caldari are the dev's favorite children..

Exactly.
Quote: Elite was a hugely influential game, serving as a model for more recent games such as EVE Online, Freelancer, Jumpgate, Infinity: The Quest for Earth, Wing Commander: Privateer and the X series of space trading games.

Now the tables have turned, Eve Online will be known as the first MMO space game and future games using a similar structure will be compared to or inspired by Eve Online. As I remembered correctly one of the creators of Elite wanted to make an MMO back in 2000 but scraped the idea as he thought the online infrastructure was inadequate.

And to whoever play this game without even knowing what Elite is, shame on you, you fail your geeky 101 test.
BTW: we DEMAND a dev comment in this thread.

Oh never knew that game was the fist ever space MMO, then again reading the wiki it was a total failure and only lasted a couple of years, maybe that is why I overlooked that game.

Yay got a Dev response that actually does not involve locking my thread
I was not actually hoping for a response in my find from any dev, I just could not resist in fiddling with the new ranks to create the Elite logo.

E&B wasn't the first, on the contrary, one of the longest running (still active no less.. really small player base now =( Space based MMO was a MUD called Federation. It was alot like Eve is at its heart, a space trading game. Combat was light, and always took a back seat to the trading and the unholy groat. (Groat == money) at its peek had about 4000-10000 players on at any given time when it moved over to AOL. It was even the first game I ever saw (and I believe the first) to implement the $14.95/month gameplay plan.
Course Fed had something over Eve. Market Dumping. THE form of alliance warfare. What better way to win a war than to destroy your enemies economy? (Note to CCP, add this ability!)
Plus, didn't Eve begin back in 98 or so when the original framers wanted to make a Multilayer Elite?
Oh, and CCP, when will entering warp speed turn my exotic dancers into Fertilizer! I have stuff to plant already. -----------------------------------

Jumpgate was way ahead of E&B, before that I-Magic had a 3D space MMO in 1996, but I'm not sure if it left beta.
As for the OP, I've contacted DB and his lawyers will be calling CCP shortly

Not so long ago (about a year), I remember reading on IRC one of the Dev team, Hammerhead i think it was, saying that yeah some aspects of EVE were based/inspired by Elite and David Braben and Ian Bell knew about it and approved.

Well, I mean, it's like saying that some aspects of D&D (and 90% of RPGs out there) were inspired to the lords of the rings. Not exactly difficult to discern.
