My problem was the memory stick and UT2k4 caused the most problems. EVE wasn't as bad as that or even Jedi Accademy. Quake 3 was also pretty rough on me. Sound cards and memory ( and memory timing ) is not just EVEs fault but the production/development times from the manufacturers to produce components to meet demand. -----

I unchecked the "reboot after crash tab" Now, when I crash it goes to destop, but its frozen. No keyboard or mouse control. I have to reset. no BSOD. Odd thing is it mostly only happens after the pc has been on standby all day and I come home and begin playing. If I reboot first it usually wont crash. This sucks.
I cant run memtest86 because my floppy drive wont respond.

I agree. Alot of people have this same problem so placing a sticky on this thread could be a good idea. With enough heads all trying to figure out the same problem I'm sure we'll be able to find a fix for this. Although we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been associated with long delays. |

AAAHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGHHHHHH
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY... Standby is great for laptops & other PC's that are always in demand. PC's that are left for hours on end have always had prolems with standby and they dont need it.
My ATi 9600 Mobile is 100% guarenteed to crash if my PC has been in standby and I run a Dx game on it.
I really wish MS would remove that option for home PC's as it causes loads more problems & keeps eating up power from the mains when a simple "Shutdown" would save you money.

Wha? I have had numerous people thet I thought knew what they are doing say to use standby and not shutdown claiming the exact opposite of what you said. though I do find it odd with this pc I have to hit the power key to "wake up" from standby whereas my old one would wake by the mouse.
I turned my sound hdwre accel down to basic to no avail.
Update. I pulled one stick of memory out and havent crashed yet. Only one nights playing though, but I still get the dissapearing ship or black screen every once in a while.

A long time ago... back in the days when CPU's didn't need heatsinks (Yes I am that old), PC's never had any form of power managment for the CPU etc. They used to run full belt all the time & generate the max ammount of heat when on.
Nowadays, the CPU will cool down when not in use & heat up again when used. Also the HDD will power down and stop spinning when not in use.
The old reason for not switching off a PC was that the thermal shock does more damage than good to the IC's etc inside the PC. The same thermal shock now happens whenever a PC is left idle due to modern power managment so what is the point in it still using electricity to keep the light on the front of the case on & possibly keep the PSU fan spinning when the same damage could occur whether the PC is switched off (& drawing no power) or in standby (& still drawing power & costing you money).
I have understood the idea of thermal shock for a long time, its what makes lightbulbs blow if switched on or off lots, however someone once made a comment that it is better to leave them on as they last longer, until he worked out that he would spend about 20x as much on the electricity to light it than the buld was worth. His lights lasted longer however.

Edited by: M1rage on 24/05/2004 06:45:56 I had the same symptoms and it had absolutely nothing to do with the sound drivers. Everything I had was configured just the way the game as is running right now and prior to the problem. Cleared the cache no avail... finally I just reinstalled and redownloaded the patches. I know that's now what you want to hear but... what you can do is make a copy of your cache and then put it back in when once the game is working again.
Take care, Mir
BTW: What caused my problem was going from full screen to windowed mode on an ATI card. The game hung as it went to windowed and I was forced to reboot the puter. After that- just as you said, every time you start eve, you reboot.
