Just as I was undocking in Jita 4-4 I noticed how close the moon and the other station are within range of eachother, and this problably results into a "super-grid" over time. Does this cause additional lag due to more clients need more synching then with smaller grids?
Or am I missing the concept of a grid as it is implemented in EVE here?

If I understood you correctly you're saying the Jita 4-4 station is on the same grid cause you can see it? If so this ain't necessarily true as Planets, Moons, Stars, Gates and Stations can be seen even if you're not on grid with them. -------- Yes, I know I'm an alt, what are you going to do about it? |

Jita stations and actual space is on different grids i think, at least, developers said something similer to that.

You can take a position where stations seem to be in a few hundred km range. Since 250km is the max lock range of ships and a player can be on one grid at a time, there must be a problem OR a coalesced supergrid, either way my instincts tell me something is not right. If there is a supergrid and no extra lag due to that fine.....if no supergrid, a pilot might not see ships from one of the other grids that is just tens of kilometers away...not fine!
Some word of a developer here that knows about this stuff would be apreciated

All grids are the same size. They do not depend on near by stellar objects.
To see how big a grid is, fly away from the station until the ships disappear.
You will find that as soon as you reach the edge of the grid, all of the items on that grid will disappear, only items that are visible system wide will remain. This is exactly how it works.
If you can make it to the edge of the grid you can break all locks on you.
The reality is, that you rarely fight near grid boundries. Most fights happen near the center of a grid, keeping everyone involved.

I was under the impression grids were dynamic, not fixed. In fact I used a bookmark near a certain station quite often and one time I could not even see ships next to the station 180km away from me! Usually they show up just fine from that exact same spot. And that was a station, so a stationary object, there must be more to it then you know.

there has to be more to it.
How is a sniping apoc that is actually capable of hitting 249km away supposed to take advantage of that if the grid isnt dynamic.
I have a hunch that the grid is set to show anything within about 250-400km of you. My views and opinions are my own.

Grid sizes have to be dynamic, because i have had spots 370k away and still see all the ships, and i have had them disappear at 250k,
Also seeing NPC pirats 4000km away from a belt in 0.0 is not uncommon, sadly but they are still on your overview.

Edited by: Inspiration on 25/05/2008 11:07:56 One correction to my original post, its two moons that are really close to Jita 4-4, the station at moon 5 is at a respectable distance. Still it is an 'interesting' abnormality worth looking into, just so see if it has negative consequences on playability. Seeing that the grid sizes are dynamic and some sort of algorithm is responsible for adjusting it constantly, that alone could cause server load and may even be noticeable in the form of lag. Maybe not as much as having an autopilot optimize a route over 15 way points on a client, but still :).
Some final developer answer to put my mind at rest is welcome still!

Grids I Belive are of a fixed size - 1000Km along eachside the placemnt of stations and so on with in these grids are not however - this results ins some odditys including in the past Astroid belts with half the roids on a seperate grid and so on.

Was involved in a 1054km grid lag fest battle just last night. So 1000km is not max. And lag was about 15 minutes per action, any action, as in i could slow boat out of range of my target before i could lock it much less shoot it. This was 200 on 200 ish in a CCP declared reinforced node. Although I dont think node reinforcement is real. Enjoy the lag empire junkies and welcome to 0.0 pilots dark side of the complaining. ____________________________ Point Zero Corp

Grid 101:
Drop a jetcan. Fly away until the can disappears from overview. Fly back a bit until it comes back on. Drop another can.
Rinse and repeat.
Each time you drop a can (maybe other stuff too) the grid will expand to include the can and the space around it.
As far as Jita 4-4 goes, if you flew manually to the other station while dropping cans every so often you could theoretically stretch the grid to include both stations.

teoretically.. no, the size of the grid should not effect lag noticeble. ___________________________________________ Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded |

You are not always at the center of the grid. I am unsure of how big is one grid, but they seem to be all the same size.

This is in fact a bug, the distances goes wrong as the client shows the NPCs moving over their top speed to nowhere... Even if perfectly reproductible, it's a bug. My guess is that NPCs should not leave a grid by flying but should 'teleport' somewhere else to move. This is just a bad behaviour, not swapping them to the next grid, because they are not players. If you follow them with an inty, I guess you loose them when you leave the grid. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !
