Every time I install a new client, for every account, for every patch, I need to set all my settings again. Ie I need to:
- Change all the overview tabs
- Change the various settings in the preference window
- Set the shortcuts
- Various other things
This takes so much time every time and I never know how long it lasts, that I've stopped configuring the overview and only set a few shortcuts and change the most annoying settings.
Therefore I propose that all settings not directly related to hardware (sound- and display-settings) would be stored on the server. One setting for every account or character.
As has been discussed before here in this forum, it should probably include some sort of import/export capability as well, at least for the overview settings as they are without doubt the ones that takes the longest to configure and are the hardest to get right. -- Ceterum censeo reinforcements needs to stop shooting drones. |

the mind boggles at the load times such a thing would cause.
i dont want my overview to take three seconds to load ever time i undock or jump to another system. thats enough time for me to get into a situation where i will get WTFPWNED.

I don't understand why this would take any time at all to load? Everything else is cached on the clientside, so what would be the difference to now in loading speed?
Ofc, it would imply transfering 10kB or so data upon logging in with the character, but I think at least I can live with that. -- Ceterum censeo reinforcements needs to stop shooting drones. |

37 thousand people all getting their settings from the server at once.
thats a lot of requests.
on a small scale, that would work. but on a large scale, that takes a bite out of CCP's bandwidth. its a bite id rather have reserved for other things personally :)

You mean after a server crash? Otherwise people log in at most 5k at a time, and that's just directly after dt.
When you log in, I can guarantee you that +/- 10kB would be negligable. Especially if you use the cache properly and only send files that are different on the server (which I assume CCP does). -- Ceterum censeo reinforcements needs to stop shooting drones. |

correct me if im wrong, but everything on your UI re-initializes when you jump or undock. i know your assets window refreshes if its open when you do either of these things, and im pretty sure the UI does as well, given the spastic location changes of my drone bay window whenever i jump. |

You're not wrong, but there's no need to download the file from the server every time you jump or reload the overview. It would be available in your local cache, updated only when you log in. Settings would be synced to server when you change settings.
Afaik, that's how the images on items work. Ie, they get downloaded from the server when they are needed, and then they are read from cache and not from server. -- Ceterum censeo reinforcements needs to stop shooting drones. |
