I would like to propose that the following changes be made to the UI/HUD. I believe these should all be not contentious.
1. Skills page of character sheet Change: Highlight the *currently training* skill, not just the partially-trained ones. Reason: the blinking doesn't always work and is often difficult to find in a list of 20+ skills in a section. Pros/cons: should be easy to code as makes use of existing ability to colour segment. No downside.
2. Chat channels (including local) Change: permit the *list* of pilots present (on right) to only show names/flags, ie. suppress the image (or body outline) Reason: space saving (get in twice number of pilots for same vertical space), bandwidth saving (no downloads by accident), faster access (no scrolling a fleet channel to find the pilot you need an aside with) Pros/Cons: asking for it to be an *option*, same as displaying the image already is on the actual conversation side of the window.
3. Chat channels (especially local) + Journal + Assets Change: Reduce minimum width / height requirements on these windows to enough to not 'lose' the window (eg. 20px) Reason: Presently the minimum width / height means waster screen real estate, eg even if only one mission there is room for eight or so; if you are watching pilot names in local then you can't reduce the width of the separated local to just the names column; if you want to see a marker when you are passing through many systems to remind you that you have assets in that system you can't just keep enough of the 'solar system'tab of Personal Assets page visible, you have to use (waste) substantially more. Pros/Cons: Making it a roller blind doesn't do the job as it hides the information; making a new minimum in pixels would mean that it wouldn't get reduced to zero and lost.
4. Personal Assets Change: (1) Presently, each station system, the total number of items, and the number of jumps is listed, but you can only sort on system name. Enable sorting by number of jumps Change: (2) For each asset line there is a column "Group" yet for ships it shows the class of ship, not that it is a ship. Add an extra column so that all examples of a particular *group* can actually be ordered (eg "Artillery", "Ships") Change: (3) Extend the 'Search - item type' functionality tab to include the group of the item (eg. search for "Battleship" rather than "Drake") Reason: Pilots typically have a lot of stuff. Making it easier to find keeps us in space not searching for ages Pros/Cons: No obvious downsides that I can see.
5. Overview - EW icons Change: The new EW icons are very useful and welcome, but they are stuck on the right of the overview and get 'lost'. Make the EW icons a column in their own right, not just an overlay which cannot be moved to suit the pilot. Reason: Overviews get complicated due to needing many columns visible, making the EW icons disappear. Making them more visible means better quality of war for everyone. Pros/Cons: the icons are already there and assigned to a line, assigning them to a column shouldn't be too difficult?
I am aware that there are many other UI/HUD issues, but I would like to see these dealt with quickly and simply. Please support.

I don't use every one of those, but all seem reasonable to me. Would like to add, the EW symbols, would be awfully nice to have a 'hover over' pop up to say what that ship is doing to you... I still haven't gotten them all figured out yet.

Definitely supported. Its nice to see a CSM member that is bringing these issues up.
I would ask that you take a look at the following two issues which have gotten some community support so far and I believe fit with the no cons/quick fix with big benefits theme of the five points to your larger UI improvement issue: - Station Containers should be remotely searchable - Module activation lights should be more visible at a quick glance

This post covers those I expect to be non-contentious; I have already commented on the container one (or a thred elsewhere on same issue). The activation light is something I will look at it a moment, but I agree that in some systems it can be difficult to spot (hence I usually rotate space until there is a dark area under the modules, indeed I usually fly/fight by instruments alone anyway)

All of these are good suggestion, some needed more then others. The one that needs most attention is the EW icons, should DEFINITLY be added as a proper column. -- Everyone is someone elses wierdo. |

YES
especially the personal assets changes. This is a game that is heavy on logistics, yet the tools it gives to manage them are sorely lacking yet begging for these basic features.

Big support... especially since I just removed a column from my overview to effectively *give* EW icons a column by leaving part of it empty.

Mainly for the Assests search idea, i totaly agree with being able to search for a class of ship rather than specific name, like you said eg "Drake" when "Battlecruiser" would sufice.
Good ideas all round.

I'll support, but I believe that if you're going to present the UI Improvements issue, you should give them the whole list of it, not just bits and pieces, as they may want to fix the whole thing and be done with it.
There are two categories of problems with the UI:
- things that don't work right (bugs or almost bugs) - new features / improvements needed
For example, I'd like to see "show info" be the default choice when hot-linking something by dragging it to the chat window. We have to click too many times in order to link a gang of 7 people into a defense channel, for example.
I'd like to see the buttons for when I can open a Silo, Hangar Array, Ships Array, etc., light up at the correct distances (they are currently lighting up at almost double the distance that the server allows; you click the button only to get an error message).
I'd like to see them fix the Overview bugs with the windows moving about once and for all.
Anyway, I'll vote for your issues because anything is better than nothing, but I think it's worth compiling a complete list of bugs and issues and presenting that.

Agreed; that the buttons appear available but aren't can be dangerously misleading at times.

This is repaired in the upcoming patch (thankfully!)

This list was for what I felt are non-contentious points that all pilots will agree on and which should be pretty straight-forward to implement.
As you correctly note there are a range of other UI issues raised by various people and I would like to see those put forward too, either this time or in two months' time.

All very small, very easy to make changes that'd make everyone's lives just that little bit more tolerable.
Support for all except point 5, which, while I agree needs changing, I dislike your proposals for.
Quote: 5. Overview - EW icons Change: The new EW icons are very useful and welcome, but they are stuck on the right of the overview and get 'lost'. Make the EW icons a column in their own right, not just an overlay which cannot be moved to suit the pilot.
Allow pilots to choose which column this gets overlaid on, and add them to the targeting reticule on the HUD, exactly like the outgoing weapons-fire icons show on the right of the target-image.
We would then have the image of the targeted ship, on one side the inbound E-war from it, and on the other, the outbound fire to it.
We do not need yet more columns on an already over-wide overview.
