For a people who don't care in the slightest for the sport can you imagine the fuss there would have been if you'd won? There would have been no effort spared to rub it in England's face.
I really don't give a fig who won, I watch only the finest of sports; Darts, Bowling and Boxing but some of the responses in here prompted me to speak up.

Yeah even if we had won none of us would care and it still wouldn't be on any news networks. I think the only possible way for it to make the news networks is if we somehow won the world cup. Even then no one would give a flying fart. Americans just don't care about football (soccer). --- My cat Putter approves of this post. Be a Ninja! It's not football as in football you KICK the BALL with your FOOT. Hence the name FOOTBALL. What you are talking about is some really humoerotic crap, where young muscular guys bend over and look at eachothers bums, then they all clash together in a hot passionate embrace.

Quote: #2 Football (meaning football not soccer btw)
I think you mean American Football and not Football. Like it or not, Association Football is the most popular sport in the entire world by a large margin, and apart from the US and a couple of other countries, It's known as Football worldwide, not just in Europe.
Oh, and like the other guy said, real football actually involves kicking a ball with your foot.

In american football(seriously we need to start calling it something else)you have punts/field goals/kickoffs.
Asfor the worldwide thing, the question is how many people even care if our team lost or not, I would say the majority havent watched a football game in america longer then 10 minutes.

I've seen the game. Too bad they lost. But it was on the last 30 minutes just to watch it for "hell out of it." I think I heard/read somewhere that US won a game, 7-0 score was it? Btw, how does a soccer team "advance" in the tournament?
Anyway, I can't call Soccer a sport. They're nothing, but ACTORS. If I want to watch actors, I rather watch WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). The wrestlers act better than those soccer players that goes "omg, ref me in GREAT P41N! Yellow/red card him!!"
If I want to watch a sport, that'd be NHL, (and I don't really like basketball, football's 2nd worse after soccer) followed by baseball, but don't really watch baseball much
BTW, I am an american incase you're wondering. -----------------------------------

Edited by: Iva Soreass on 29/05/2008 08:53:19 Your americans don't care about football ? Funny that when i went to the usa in march (SF and Vegas) nearly every sport shop had football stuff there.
In SF in union square i walked into nike town and the 1st thing i saw when i went up the escalators was 2 maniquins (SP?) one of a arsenal kit and the other of a man utd kit, aswell as barcalona (i think) and other teams kits were there.
When i went to the addidas store of market street in the windows everywhere was MLS kits and get a chance to meet david beckham. Even when i went into the big shopping mall there 2 sports shops in that had quite abit of footy stuff. Even on the street i saw some ppl wearing footy shirts (saw UTD and Arsenal), damn even the bar across the road from where i was staying in SF (tommys joint i think it was called) had yes you guessed it FOOTBALL on there TV nearly all time.
When i went to vegas and popped the to outlet the 1st sports shop i went into had yes you guessed it FOOTBALL shirts and stuff on view the min i walked in. When i went to eat one afternoon with the missus in the mile mall place in one of the casino's on the strip we went into some sports bar and would you guess it the 1st thing the waitress said to me is "oh i love that shirt (was wearing a arsenal shirt) i love arsenal and real madrid" and on the TV's in there was yep you guessed it FOOTBALL, Utd vs Newcastle iirc.
So /shrug i guess you guys don't care//like footy huh even tho its in nearly every sports shop and on sports tv.

The irony in this post is epic. First of all, you went to San Francisco, the ghey capital of the WORLD, and Las Vegas, sin city, a town that has no American football team.
Second, it was probably soccer season at the time. Football season was pretty much over.
Third, your name fits with where you went.

Typical American, if you cant find a decent argument just call him homosexual(propberly yet to come out yet). and BTW the Superbowel is only the most watched event OUTSIDE A WORLD CUP YEAR.
- thats right, more people watch a country become World Champions rather than a team from a american city play another team from a american city to become 'world champions'

You Sir are a Muppet, and i quote " An average of 260 million people tuned in to see Italy claim its fourth title after winning 5-3 in a penalty shootout. More than 600 million viewers watched some part of the Berlin match.
This was more than double the average global audience for the Super Bowl, but far less than some of the estimates we heard during the tournament. Overall, the television ratings for the World Cup were stronger than ever before: "

I should have specified "In America", especially since that's what we're discussing - whether or not Americans care about soccer. So my only error was assuming you understood that I meant "In America." In which case your post only proves my point. I never tried to make the case that American football is more popular worldwide. It's not my fault that Europe sucks at sports where you use your opposable thumbs.

Soccer is grwoing in the US and anyone in the US that says differently is a hater of soccer and could care less. The guys commenting earlier in the post probably still like watching baseball on TV. And the whoever saying that it would not even be mentioned on TV must not have watched any ESPN before he got onto the forums.
To the OP saying the US team is not an opponet doesn't know anything about the US team. The US team made it to the Quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup and lost a game where the US possed the ball in their offensive half for more then 66% of the game. Yes that is the past, but you can not deny the fact that when our team come to play we can compete with any soccer powerhouse. Go back and watch the 2002 game we had against the runner ups Germany. It just happend that Kahn was the best goalie of the day.
In the 2006 World Cup it was bad coaching decisions that broke the teams spirit. The US will from here on out will do nothing but become more and more of a solid team. In England the club teams are more important to the localities then the national team. The US does not have this to deal with and for the most part the development of soccer is concentrated on international dominance.
I have worked with the collegiate and ODP programs for men and women and the talent is there, it just needs a little more development
The US will win a world cup championship in the next 14 years.

In any case Baseball sucks. I don't care much for football or basketball either to be honest.
I do enjoy playing soccer though with friends but I most likely wouldn't watch it. Our soccer is funner anyways cause after a lot of beer it more or less turns into rugby.
