What the hell did you expect?... Yes, it has flaws. Yes, the editing is a bit dirty, he didn't use AA and the voice actors lack the enthusiasm you'd expect - That dosen't stop it being enjoyable. ...

DO WANT!
A little constructive criticism though:
1) Use of primary character models from HL2 was a bit annoying. I know how much a pita it is to do proper skinning, but it does detract from the video.
2) Why were the crew on Raven wearing gasmasks? yes, I know thats the combine model. Little details like that just irk me :P
3) The captain/crew were a bit too unemotional w/ the whole ship dying around them.
4) If the command bridge got blown to smithereens, how was it repaired so quickly?
5) I wish Widows were really that cool
These are minor points, mind you. I simply bring them up so that when/if/maybe you do make a Clear Skies II, that you can improve upon your already excellent production!

John, you might not even see this post but that video was immense. Amazing. Captured both my love of hl2/gmod and eve. Absolutely astounding. I want more. I'll pay for more. Keep it coming..
Also, loved hearing another irish accent, Tß an scannßn sin iontach, nach ea? (rusty as hell)

However i should say, and this is with 4 and a half years studying media, that the technical aspects were nicely done, but this doesn't make up for the cast being wooden, uncharismatic and obviously better suited to being behind the 'camera' than in front of it.
The producer should, if serious about the project, get in other people to write the script and act in it so that he can focus on producing.

Or you could try to rebut his points, right?
Clear Skies is AFAIK the first EVE machinama and in that respect it's amazing. It's also a groundbreaking technical feat to combine the HL2 and EVE engines so seamlessly. However, it is not perfect, nor is it the first machinima. There are hundreds of other Machinima out there, some much better, some much worse than Clear Skies. The way some of you talk you sound like a bunch of fundamentalists defending the bible.
Aside from Tomiko's comment about wanting the time he spent watching back (I wouldn't go anywhere near that far) the technical skill apparent in this production is much greater than the artistic skill. That's not to say it's not a passable production especially when considered it's amateur work. Still there are lots of great amateur films and machinimas, there are amateur conventions that feature amazing work. Thus claiming that it's to be classed as perfection despite its failings because it isn't professional isn't a valid argument. Ad hominem attacks on those trying to provide constructive criticism (eg well lets see you do better) also prove nothing about the original work. The critic might not have done better personally, but I have seen better amateur machinama than this.
I used to play a certain console game 4-5 years ago. In the community very few videos existed and few players owned video capture cards or had the technical knowledge to make a film. I bought a capture card, filmed a few games, then clumsily pieced clips together using default Windows Move Maker templates with poorly synched and timed music in the background. It was awful. My first ever editing job and it was terrible. I didn't realize exactly how much so at the time, but pulling it up...yeah. Bad. But I was praised up and down for it. Why? Because nobody had seen something like that in the community before. Later on when better montages came along people finally admitted to themselves how bad it really was. Now however I have learned much more about video editing and can produce a much better video. I learned from the experience instead of stubbornly refusing to see my mistakes.
I'd like to address the creators directly and say that you've certainly created something great here, but if you strive to learn and improve the next could be brilliant and the one after that amazing.

It's a start for an eve online machinima contest. So far, it's the best Perfect ? No, I agree. But saying "I want my 40 minutes back" deserves some rude comments.

It's one of the first! Praising all around! If we all go "the montage and cutting sucked, voices sucked, hire actors, you wasted your time, etc", even though the producer says it's his first try, the next guy would give up even before starting, seeing how high expectations are. So people cheer a lot, because it's new and never done before and also to encourage future similar productions.

Pretty useless advice, since they probably know it already, being their first video, having no experience, etc. But it's a start, and there's no need for these kind of comments. It's human nature to improve on its own, and doing 'better' next time!
Bottom line: screw you, "i want my 40 minutes back" people, and to the producer and his crew, good work, move on to next episode!

Of course his opening comment was uncalled for, I said as much in my post.
Originally by: Xparky It's a start for an eve online machinima contest. So far, it's the best Perfect ? No, I agree. But saying "I want my 40 minutes back" deserves some rude comments.
Well we're almost on the same page, I'm just saying answering rude comments with ruder comments doesn't prove anything, it's just fighting fire with fire. Still when politicians of today stoop to debates resembling some of the debate here I guess I can't really expect something else.
Originally by: Xparky If we all go "the montage and cutting sucked, voices sucked, hire actors, you wasted your time, etc", even though the producer says it's his first try, the next guy would give up even before starting, seeing how high expectations are. Of course and I'm not against a bit of praise, I'm against all the lashing out at those that have anything slightly negative to say despite the amount of praise they give it as well. If you think the voice acting is amazing explain why, those against it are stating what they didn't like about the voice acting.
I mean I found a few negative things about this film but I am still greatly inspired. People don't need to assume such extreme positions.
Originally by: Xparky Pretty useless advice, since they probably know it already
Just because something is obvious doesn't mean it's not worth saying. At least it's different than the 20 "OMFG amazing stupendous best movie EVAR" posts that you don't seem to have a problem with.

Extreme positions eh? "I want those 40 minutes back" ... isn't that an extreme position ? And yet you went to defend the troll. A guy who posts [the video was] "lazily edited, poorly written and the acting was even worse" regarding a first release, eve-groundbreaking production. "People don't need to assume such extreme positions" .... Then defend the innovator, not the low life sad mother ****** who spews crap from his high horse.

Quote: People don't need to assume such extreme positions.
um.. excuse me?
what about "I want my 40 minutes back" isn't extreme.
By the way I watched it again I saw tops 5 scenes with rotating. By far 80% of the cuts were very traditional.
He never breaks the 180 rule.
He uses great staging, good examples of who to use close ups, and extreme closeups.
A decent montage.
He wrote a plot that doesn't just tell one story, it opens up at least 4 other untold stories, this shows great writing as it all feel natural. I for one can't wait to see some of the extra characters backstories and to figure out what he meant by "hard times"
I see no issues with his use of cuts, the music fits in nicely and doesn't overpower the voice acting.
the voice acting feels natural, better than acting in sci-fi channel movies :P
Sure you can make negative feedback, but "I want my 40 mins back" isn't feedback, it's a slap in face.
Or is this the whole "I don't like it because it's cool" argument? As a person that doesn't like a lot of main stream things, I never use this excuse, I don't like things because I don't like them. I never add "I'm not going to jump on the band wagon" what does other peoples opinions have to do with anything? It's about feedback and giving tips, teaching, and sharing tricks. And sometimes you got to say something mean, like This scene could of been done a lot better. but don't make it your opinion, make it a suggestion.
Which reminds me can I suggest making 10 minute shorts? maybe even 5 minute ones?
You know, little sci-fi story, something fun, like a sunday comic.
hell make them even shorter if you can get your point across :)
maybe a 1 min video that has a start, lead up, and a punch line.
Of course these would be harder for the non-eve community to get but who cares :P

Stop trying to cover for the unprofesional arse who has no friends. you can tell he has no friends because he brought his "friends" into his own review.
what if you read a review for a movie that started with "well me and my friend watched it"
And what the hell is wrong with the characters? wooden? well If 95% of the viewers feel a connection with the main character, feel for him, and wonder about his past and such, guess what, he isn't wooden, he is wooden in his opinion.

Cast being wooden ? They're computer generated for ****'s sake! Uncharismatic ? What did you expect ? Bruce Willis ? They're COMPUTER GENERATED people!
Or maybe he means the dialogue. I personally found it extremely funny, nice accents and pretty well synced with the character's graphic models.
The story-line ... yes, maybe the "get a contract that turns out it's a trap" idea is a bit overused in movies...
