Originally by: MotherMoon By the way I watched it again I saw tops 5 scenes with rotating. By far 80% of the cuts were very traditional.
He never breaks the 180 rule.
He uses great staging, good examples of who to use close ups, and extreme closeups.
A decent montage.
He wrote a plot that doesn't just tell one story, it opens up at least 4 other untold stories, this shows great writing as it all feel natural. I for one can't wait to see some of the extra characters backstories and to figure out what he meant by "hard times"
I see no issues with his use of cuts, the music fits in nicely and doesn't overpower the voice acting.
the voice acting feels natural, better than acting in sci-fi channel movies :P
Yea! Someone wants to discuss the film instead of hurling insults!
I went back and watched some scenes and you're right the rotating isn't used 80% of the time. Unfortunatly from the start of the first scene until the end of the opening credits the camera hardly stops spinning, zooming in and out quickly, and rotating. Guess that first impression threw me off (as well as made me feel a bit dizzy.)
Interesting you bring up the 180 degree rule. In the rest of the film I completely agree but watch the opening scene and tell me which side RJ and the mechanic are consistently on.
I did like lots of the tracking shots though. The shot of JR fleeing the bridge was intense, Smith and JR walking down the corridor, and the tracking shot from the bridge to the guns introducing the ammo discussion scene is great.
The story isn't that bad. I did think the jokes were great though. Dialogue was often great as well, it was just a few out of place voice actors and some of the overall plot that threw me off. I think that the Raven pilot seemed a bit detatched from the whole situation of his certain demise at the end there, and JR made things sound a little too good vs. evil type of thing when it was really just business as usual.
I didn't like the voice pitch for the shuttle pilot. Seems like it should be deeper pitched. The actual acting isn't bad though. Sauls voice grates on my I don't know why. It sounds like he has a cold. Didn't like the Raven pilot sounds kinda whiney for a greybeard. He didn't seem very threatening, just creepy. Smith could be a bit more threatening and mysterious as far as the voice acting goes as well. Dialogue and plot is pretty good though.
Perhaps it's not so much the voice acting I dislike as the casting. Some voices just don't seem to fit the roles.
All the CG characters acting is amazing though, especially JR. Very well animated.

Wow, you generous person you. I bet you are loved by all the blonde moronic single brain celled lifeforms that claim to be "Ladies", but really you tend to insult them in such a way that they don't realise they have been insulted.
One final thing I will say here, yes it was a low budget movie (for all intents and purposes it is a movie) but my god I have seen big budget movies without half as much love for the scene as was depicted here.
Be a little more considerate of the situation. ----------------------------

I could be, but I'm not just trolling others for no reason. Also some people seem to think I said that quote about wasting 40min and 8.9/10 etc. I didn't, I was quoting someone else, thanks.

just like to quote you on one thing mate
Quote: Yea! Someone wants to discuss the film instead of hurling insults!
didn't you start with that? just saying :P
anyways whatever you said before you actually brought up feedback! yay!. Telling someone what is wrong with their work is the opposite of saying "give me my 40 mins back" because telling someone for instance "the shuttle voice didn't fix, or even "gasp" sucked, means you think the film was wroth your 40 mins and in fact is wroth far more.

Well that's eve's camera control for you. You didn't make it clear you were talking about the scenes outside in space. which yes I have to agree have quite a bit of spinning. but he didn't take this into an engine he just used fraps with eve, so I can forgive him for this one :P
but yeah it's zoom rotate out, rotate, rotate, zoom rotate in. But this only goes for the part with the intro, I was comments before about the camera with the character scenes, I didn't see any overuse of any camera angles.
However he or should I say, you OP, show that you can take great shots without this, maybe if you saved the rotating zoom in for dramatic effect? Also I must assume you already know the hold left mouse button, aim, hold right button zoom trick... right?
Also there is basically no panning in eve so you worked well with what you had :)
Quote: Interesting you bring up the 180 degree rule. In the rest of the film I completely agree but watch the opening scene and tell me which side JR and the mechanic are consistently on.
It's got a couple of issues, it could be reworked, but it doesn't come off as lazy.

Don't forgot the seamless shot going form space into the bridge.

It wasn't the main story that made it interesting it was the characters. the story is a wonderful yet basic Sci-Fi standard. However the settings and all the unexplained bits made it interesting.
Quote: I think that the Raven pilot seemed a bit detatched from the whole situation of his certain demise at the end there, and JR made things sound a little too good vs. evil type of thing when it was really just business as usual.
I don't think he came off as good vs. Evil, I felt like JR was being evil, and he knew it but didn't care. You tried to kill me, I'm ****ed, I hate running away, and I'm going to kill you.
but that's me :)

Sure the shuttle pilot could of had a deeper voice.

Hehe that's how you tell what part of Europe he's from :)

EDIT: wait is this about my idea about making 5-10 min shorts instead of 40 min epics?
sorry if I want to present him with an idea that would make his life easier and give us more to watch.

You dusted off a hardly used forum alt for this?
You play Eve-Online. You need to get a life, before you can start asking for it back.
And four years studying media... I'd like to see your credentials to make such a claim. Surely you have to have written something in that time to satisfy a class requirement. Perhaps even made a film or two that we could peruse.
To the film-maker: That was perfect, and by far, one of the better eve-video's I've seen to date. Excellent storyline; much more than the usual "pew pew pew" stuff that abounds around here. Well Done.

I've spent over 4 years of my life studying media. It was the written text. I have a Master's degree to back it up too, plus 2 BAs. And I can still say that this video kicks ass.

Ok, while I can to a certain extent agree with you, I feel that here he managed to capture the essence of EvE.
Imagine you are yourself caught in a gatecamp, or whatever (let's use this scene as an example), the enemy stops firing and offers you a ransom or you have a short break from the firing. You as a human being will be suddenly relieved and you have a spot of time to relax as such and you try to barter a deal for your life...
Well all of a sudden after a few (granted very few but nonetheless) words the enemy opens fire on you again, surely you wouldn't really have time to say much or even be surprised before the round hits you.
This is what clinched it for me, the sheer essence of the game and acting was very tight for my tastes and I believe that here we have some non-manufactured sci-fi crap that was made out of love, not for the bucks and as such nowhere near as ott as some films I have recently seen.
I mean seriously I frequently prefer amateur shinies over professional crap.
This was amateur shinies on a shoestring budget, just like CCP in the early days and look how great they have become... ----------------------------

Yeah, I couldn't be bothered to look up the guy that said it's name. Oops. Well looks like you just got a taste of the random flaming that's going on too. It's vicious I tells ya! I just wanted to discuss what could be improved in the film, not fence with fanboys! haha
I think one of the big hurdles to making this film was that it wasn't a comedy like most machinima is. Thus when a voice doesn't fit you don't just laugh at it. There's much less suspension of disbelief and realism required in a comedy.

Very impressed that someone took the time to make something like this. I downloaded it thinking it would just be another typical Eve fraps movie. During a commercial of a show on TV I decided to start watching and when the show on the TV came back on, it got muted. :)
Was it perfect? No. But it was perfect enough for me to watch it over some "professionally" made show and far more perfect than anything I could do. I congratulate you on making a great video that captured Eve's essence.
I can only hope you do more.

That was awesome! Thank you!
And if I can make one (hopefully constructive) criticism then, like a few others, I sometimes "missed" some of the dialogue, because it was drowned out by the background sound effects. This might be something you don't notice when editing it, as you already "know" what the person is saying.
Might I suggest you get a small group of QA guys to watch the prerelease and can point out such instances to you so you can tweak the voice volume?
Asside from that, I sooo hope CCP will invite you to the FanFest where we can watch the debut of a new episode. Aaron Rex - Remember the Scordite... |
