Edited by: Last Wolf on 01/06/2008 17:48:00 So I'm way to lazy to register on some tech support forum, So here goes.
I've recently built my very first computer. Of all the problems I thought I'd have, Installing windows was not one of them.
I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition onto my new computer, But there is a catch. I have two SATA HDD's in RAID configuration using my motherboards onboard Promise controller. The windows installation disk can't find my harddrives and won't complete the setup.
Well My motherboard manual says to copy the drivers from the included CD to a floppy disk and.... HOLD IT.. a floppy disk? Last time I had a computer with a floppy drive was last millennium (literally).
So after a few google searches I found Nlite. I imported my drivers to a custom XP installation disks.. and it WORKED.. windows installed, rebooted my computer then the Windows logo flashes for less than a second.. and it reboots. Won't start up in SAFE MODE either.
So a few more google searches and I'm still stuck. Everything I've found is how to fix a windows installation that used to work, Mine has NEVER worked (Windows asking my to "Use last known good configuration" makes me chuckle)
I Don't know if it is Nlite, my Hardware, my drivers, my luck, or that fat guy across the street, but something is keeping windows from working and I'm out of ideas.

How much RAM you got? I've seen Vista 64 refuse to install when over 2GB where installed. After the installation, then you can put the remaining RAM back into your system. (If that's the problem.)

When I built this PC I had the same problem with the SATA drives but XP with SP2 recognises SATA so there is no need for the floppy. This is the 32 bit version though but I assume it's the same for the 64 bit version.
If you are already using an SP2 version of XP then ignore me completely.

I've found your problem: Originally by: Last Wolf I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition onto my new computer
Okay (a bit) more seriously, just to satisfy my curiosity, why would you want to install XP64, other than that you've bought it now? Does it actually have any real advantages over 32bit?
Secondly, why not have a floppy drive? They cost about ú5 or less, and unless you put other stuff in the 3.5" slots, you have room for it. Why not just put one in, even if you only use it once? If the cables get untidy you don't have to leave it connected.
I've had the same thing with having to install drivers from a floppy (though oddly not every time, even from the same disc) and it worked fine (good for me, bad for you I guess). The only thing I can suggest is to simplify things. Do you really need a RAID or is it just an unnecessary complication? At the least it will allow you to rule out the RAID as a problem if it's still the same installing onto a single drive. - Originally by: Kyrall Pfft antivirus? Real men use a hard drive tank.

Edited by: Last Wolf on 01/06/2008 18:29:03 I have 4gb of ram (2x2GB) installed atm.
I guess I could try to install it using only 1 HDD and see if that is the problem or not
edit: Reason I got 64bit is mainly for more RAM in the future (my mobo supports up to 8 gigs). __________________________________________________________

XP64 will only support 4GB, IIRC. If you want more than that, you have to go with Vista. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!" |

everything else i've read says both vista and XP 64 bit editions can support up to 128 gigs of RAM. (Assuming you have either 4x 32gig RAM sticks or a mobo with 64 memory slots (2gig each)
I did the research and made sure all my hardware and my mobo had XP64 driver support before i bought it.

Edited by: Eternal Error on 01/06/2008 21:50:21 You are correct, 64 bit versions of OSes can go far beyond any amount of RAM current systems can support. Also, vista 64 will not install correctly with 4gb+ of RAM. Install with one or two gigs of RAM in, then use this hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777. However, this doesn't sound like it's the problem anyway, as you ought to get a BSOD, but who knows, this could be it. Other than that, I don't have experience with RAID, so sorry.
EDIT: oh christ, XP64. Nevermind then. Get vista, XP64 driver support is crap (read: non-existant).

Vista is just annoying, I'm gonna try make XP strech as far as possible. My G/F has vista on her new computer after having XP for several years, and she hates it. She's probably never read a single forum in her life and never plays games, so she hates it out of pure experience. No "Vista Sucks" bandwagon for her to join. Hopefully Windows 7 will be out before I have to upgrade again. __________________________________________________________

XP64 is going to have major issues if you have old or exotic hardware. This is because the drivers HAVE to be 64-bit. Most mainstream hardware manufacturers provide 64 bit drivers for their stuff, but maybe there's some bit of your computer that is using 32 bit drivers, thus messing things up? If so, and if you can find out what it is, try hunting around for 64 bit drivers.
In this case, it sounds like it's either your SATA or RAID controller in need of 64 bit drivers. What motherboard are you using?

Linkage
Also I went out and bought a floppy drive for $11.00 lol
I've narrowed it down to the RAID controller. It works just fine if I have the drives in a non RAID config. __________________________________________________________

YAY! I FINALLY got raid to work. I had to just use the SATA raid and not the Promise SATA raid ports. Kinda makes me sad that i have two useless SATA ports on my mobo. __________________________________________________________

Good choice.
I've been running xp pro x64 for a good few months now - works like a charm, runs all my applications, games and peripherals nicely.
