Apparently now you can be -arrested- for having a shirt with a cartoon character on it. At least according to many airport policies (not sure if it is like this in other parts of the world).
Terrorism has many definitions, but one of the most basic is simply that of creating terror. In this the "terrorists" have won. Everyone is too afraid, the terrorists barely have to do anything now.
I found this article and thought it was idiotic in the extreme, and wanted to crosspost it so people can be aware.
Edit: My bad, reading failure

Edited by: Micheal Dietrich on 02/06/2008 22:30:00 Several points I should make.
1. This happened in Europe, not the US. 2. It states it has also happened in Canada. I also know it happened in Australia about a year ago. 3. He was threatened with arrest, not actually arrested and in personal opinion I think it may not have been because of the shirt but because he was argueing the fact but I'm most likely wrong. 4. I find Airport security to be absurdely ******** no matter where you are now days. That's why I drive everywhere. I'll gladly pay more in gas than get a colon check between flights.

Just FYI, the BBC is normally a better source of info for these stories. Turns out the Sun didn't do too bad a job this time but still.
It seems the problem was with possible offence that the tshirt might cause. Still absolute rubbish of course, but not quite on the same level as it posing a terrorist threat.
It's most likely some idiot taking new rules too literally, the guy kicks up a fuss and when the boss comes over, he takes the staff's side as the guy was making a fuss.
IMO the boss needs sacking for treating a customer in this sort of way. He should have told the other staff member to stop being an idiot, the customer has every right to kick up a fuss about this sort of stupidity.
Of course, it does depend on just how much of a fuss he was making, although that should lead to warnings about behaviour, not sending away with a warning not to change back into the tshirt.
Plus I could be reading the whole situation completely wrong... - Originally by: Kyrall Pfft antivirus? Real men use a hard drive tank.

Im gonna have to read between the lines here, I really doubt this was the beginning of his interaction with the security.
Im willing to say he was causing some sort of fuss, completely in his rights, with something the screeners or security did incorrectly. Then one of the people working remembered clothing that could be misinterpreted as a threat and related that to his shirt. This probably happened because rent-a-cops do not like to be one-upped and needed to win the day.
Yeah it is stupid, but hey if you wanna get on that plane you need to follow the rules. You can always just go home and get a refund.

I'm gonna wear a shirt with some cartoon character on it come December when I fly to Montreal just to see if anything this ******** happens.
I've got a Robot Chicken shirt and a Space Ghost shirt with Zorak on it. Which one will offend more, hmm. __________

heh
In my opinion airport security is an illusion of security.
I wouldn't be surprised if the walk through metal detectors could be remotely "beeped" when someone suspicious walks through it, thus giving the people around him the feeling of a secure environment as he gets searched.
Ive had my bags confiscated as they were new and had a chemical smell to them for 20 mins before they were handed back and i was told not to bring new bags through again (lol?)
Whilst flying through Heathrow, having totally forgotten about their laws about liquids and "liquid explosives" (because liquid explosives are OBVIOUSLY easier to make and bring onto a plane than sneaking solid explosives on in your clothes.) When they scanned my bag (containing a big bottle of water and a few smaller bottles (aftershave, bottle of coke ETC)) they whined about me bringing liquids through boarding and that i had to dump them in the bin, so i took the big bottle out and dumped it in the bin. I was then "free to go through to boarding", with about 500ml of assorted liquids, meaning if i were an ebil nasty terrowist and they were liquid explosives, there would be one less plane flying around right now...
Personally airport security and the media are terrorists, the airport itsself just profits off the terror created. longer check in times mean you have to spend more time before bosarding, thus more time to shop and buy food/drinks for yourself at the over exorbitant airport prices.

Would be interesting if the black community had said "So whats all this fuzz about, just pick the cotton and get on with it" back in the 18th century.
People have free will, free will dictates that you should make your own decisions. Mr t-shirt dude was in the right, airport security was in the wrong, hence he fought for what he believed in.

Yeah, ok. Free will. But in most cases it is just easier not frag with the security and go on. Might just save you from that jail gig. ;)
Ok, an example: You¦re on a flight to see your loved one giving birth, with the plane you¦re getting into, you will make it just in time. But the sec guard tells you "That shirt is upsetting that lady over there, change it or dont get on the plane." Same as your example, well not exactly.
But really, in this case the solution would have been really simple. Change the shirt and broceed to the nearest airport bar. The End Always Justifies The Means |

We don't have that here in sweden, but I wonder when the day comes you're not allowed to have clothes on a plane because they could be offensive and/or dangerous, hide stuff, but then you won't get to be naked either because that could be offensive, and you defo can't bring your butt on the plane, you could hide stuff in it. Things I've managed to sneak onto planes (mostly by accident)
Knife (ya know the pointy, murderous sort) Various liquids (read above) Toy gun (was a present for a cousin) 5 kilos of C4 (I'm joking this time)
Most of the time ive noticed either on the plane or when i empty out the bag. Just proves airport security sucks.....
Care to add to the list?

True story:
Just a few months ago I climbed onto a plane carrying a knife (a stiletto) and a lighter. On my body.
And my carry-on luggage contained sprays that were easily flammable in combination with my lighter.
Alls I'm sayin' is... This homeland security crap doesn't help anyone. It just gives all the loser guards/cops/screeners more excuse to be *****s to everybody because they got beat up in high school too many times.
But maybe it's because I'm a regular looking white dude. And don't tell me you honestly think they treat everyone equally.
