Hi all,
I really do apologise for this question, it has be stumped.
I am a minmitar pilot and I can fly the Rifter and Stabber. Alot of people talk about shooting rats/players within the falloff range instead of optimal.
This confuses me as I would have assumed the optimal meant exactly that and anything after that would see a decrease in DPS.
I have searched around to try and find an easy explanatin but alas I am still confused, any help on this matter would be very welcome.

They perform better in optimal, yes, but being 2km away from a blaster-ship is certain death for a stabber. Autocannons perform better than blasters at... say, 10km, while blasters perform better than autos under 5km. So all other things left equal, you'd have a better chance if you kept at range.

Tracking issues not withstanding (assuming zero transversal), you get the full DPS anywhere within optimal, almost 60% DPS at optimal + 0.5*falloff, only 40% DPS at optimal + falloff, barely around 5% DPS at optimal + 2*falloff, and a measly 0.2% of your DPS at optimal + 3*falloff.
Both blasters and autocannons have a negligible optimal (especially with high-damage ammo), but autocannons have a much better falloff, while blasters have a better tracking. As you can see, the damage decays quite fast, so it's in the best interest of the autocannon user to keep a range where tracking is less of an issue, and the blaster's damage potential has decayed a lot more than that of the autocannon. Sure, you do deal a lot less than your point-blank damage potential, but you deal a lot more compared to your enemy.

Optimal is full dps. Falloff is a trade-off of damage for range. Minmatar have very high falloff, but the weapons do less damage to start with. This means they fight in falloff doing less damage compared to a gallente ship for example, but they take less damage - since they are out of range of most ships.
Do less damage, Take less damage. -------

With Autocannons, you want to shoot people at Optimal + Falloff/2

At longer range transversal will be less making tracking easier. |

This isn't accurate (according to the guide). Probably easiest to just have a look at the tracking guide yourself (assuiming that the CCP one is accurate).

Edited by: Rastigan on 03/06/2008 17:51:46 Autocannons have the worst optimal of short range guns, they also have the longest falloff and the best tracking.
Typically its 0m to Optimal = 100% DPS (excluding tracking issues) Optimal -> Optimal + Falloff = 100% -> 50% DPS Optimal + Falloff -> Optimal + Falloff x 2 = 50% -> 0% DPS

You still get like 5% damage at 2x falloff, but really at 2x falloff it's basically don't bother. Anyways look at it this way. A blaster has an optimal of 1km and falloff of 4km while an Autocannon has an optimal of 1km and falloff of 8km. Add in barrage amo which can only be used on autocannons and a ship with a projectile falloff bonus to IV. Now your falloff is 16.8km.
At point blank the blaster is more powerful and will crush you in a straitfoward battle. However at 17km you'll be at less then 1x falloff and lose about half your damage. You'll be weak, but you'll still do decent damage. However he will be stuck at 4x his falloff rendering his blasters completely useless.
Basically the idea of fighting in falloff is to sacrifice some damage of a close range Autocannon to render your opponent impotent. _______________
