Right. I have seen people on these forums talking about ranges of 40+km on unbonused ships, with HAMs. Am I missing something?
Flight time of 4 sec x velocity of 2250m/sec makes 9km range. Throw in maxed flight time and velocity skills and that comes to 20.25km - on a stationary target, too.
I realise that there are implants that give further bonuses to flight time and velocity, and that Javelin t2 missiles get much better range - about 30km without bonuses. I am thinking about fitting a Drake with HAMs, for missions mostly so I need the range.
What am I forgetting, if anything? To get 40km out of HAms do they have to be Javelins?

Some ships (Cerb, Caracal etc.) have a Missile Velocity bonus. |

Missioning with HAMs in a Drake will not be as effective as it would be in a Cerberus or a Caracal...range will be just too limited. Javelins help a lot, but generally PvE with other-than T1 missiles increases running cost, thus lowering the real profit.
Unlike non-fleetBS-PvP where in general fights happen 90% under 24km due to tackling mechanics, PvE is highly "range sensitive". Also missions do not allow for MWD usage, so covering with a AB tenths of km is time consuming = less efficient in the long run, despite paper-dps advantages.
Also tanking is a bit problematic with HAMs, especially with T2 launchers as the PG left for LSEs is very limited. In fact you need a PDU II in order to fit just a single LSE II, along with a MWD to effectively compete in PvP scenarios. Along with field extender rigs you get a pretty good buffer tank, tho by no means comparable to the damage immune brick ppl think when talking of the Passive-Drake. Unless you are shooting at a close-range, cruiser+ sized, not very fast target, HAMs are pointless. For everything else, use "regular" heavies. And why's that ? Because regular heavies have just about the same range, almost same raw damage as Javelin HAMs, but much better explosion stats AND you can always use faction ammo for even higher raw DPS on the regular heavies.
If you plan to use Javelin HAMs constantly, you should have probably fited HMs instead. If you will be using regular/faction HAMs a lot more often than Javelins, then by all means, use'em as much as you like.

I think of faction missiles to be hideously expensive for using them in PvE... Marauders, the Nightmare and such BSs with 100% dmg bonuses might overcome that rule, tho it's hardly the case with a HAM drake.
PvP seriously benefits from them nonetheless. Join the Biggest Greek Corp! www.Mythos-eve.com - Join Mythos Channel in game! |
