There has been some references in the fluff published under the Empyrean downtime to some thing called MTACs which were uses in the liberation of Caldari Prime
so what is a MTAC? |

In the U.S. Marine Corps, MTAC refers to Marine Tactical Air Command units, which are tasked with providing equipment, maitenance and operational command to Marine air units operating as part of a ground assault. My guess is that the same definition applies here.
Armored commandos sounds pretty cool though. |

id imagine its more the logistics though, even in our laser and railgun spewing future the troops that secure a planetary surface need support.

Edited by: Mithfindel on 15/06/2008 19:37:09 In the excerpts from the upcoming novella, I do think an MTAC was some kind of a mecha. Have to check if I find those excerpts, I think they were on Ten Ton Hammer.
Edit: Found: "men operating robot-like MTAC's (Mechanized Torso-Actuated Chassis)", reference http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/35425
Edit2: Linkyfied.

Maybe it stands for:
Mobile Armored Tactical Commandos.
Troops in Power Armor, as described in Heinlein's book Starship Troopers. (not the Movie)

Pretty close, but that'd be MATC. As I mentioned, the abbreviation is expanded on the novel. (No, haven't got it, but there's an excerpt I linked.)

Think "power-loaders from Aliens" and you're pretty much there. I don't think they're as big as say a battlemech. They seem to be used in all walks of life, from just lifting heavy things in the place of a forklift truck to military use with armour and guns on them.
I would really like to see a picture of one.

MTAC = Mechanized Torso-Actuated Chassis.
There are both military and civilian variants, with the civilian version being a heavy lifting tool big and strong enough to move around sections of starship armour, and the military version being a smaller, faster but also more durable weapons platform. -
