So, who here played/still plays?
I recently retook an interest in the game - I must say it's quite fun, really. Nothing too deep, and most players now tend to prefer setting up a good fight rather than taking an easy continent with a good benefit. They merged the two US servers, which makes fights a lot bigger.
BR20/CR1 ( ) here, by the way. |

I don't play anymore, but i used to. BFRs were fixed, but the community died because of them. It's no longer "for the empire" now it's "for my personal killwhorage". |

You do have a good point - I get rather annoyed when I'm cloaked, infiltrating a base, and my empire's efforts to conquer the courtyard consist of staying 100+m away and "sniping" with gauss rifles and AV.
Although, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when I do successfully infiltrate, hack and disable the base's radar despite my empire's incompetence.

Yeah, I like that for about 30 seconds. Then after the gen goes down the idiots start sending you hate tells for "ruining the fight". Even though you may have been the reason the battle ends. Like I said it's just killwhoring now. It's why I refuse to go back. Nobody actually wants to play for their empire anymore. _______________

I have a total of 6 High-ranking characters across two accounts, since the recent server merge I haven't been on so I don't know what the names on my active account have changed to or if they have even changed at all.
[Account I forgot the password to in 2005] FatBurritoMan-K BR20/CR5 (VS) TacoMan-K BR20/CR5 (VS) Colossus-J BR20/CR5 (TR) Reaper-J BR20/CR5 (TR)
[Account that is still active, but not subbed] JasterAiglos BR25/CR5 (TR) BallistixTip BR23/CR4 (NC)
I loved to cloak, I gave no end of trouble to my enemies when I would run in, hack the term, run to a close equipment terminal and grab some boomers. As the console was resecured, the gen would go down and I would already be well on my way after throwing the jammer.

Vulture gun = BFR death in my hands. :D
Honestly I quit playing PS for a while while I tried my hand over on the Chinese servers of planetside, I got BFR Buster Plat before I got bored. (Chinese server hadn't had the hot-swap nerf patched into it at that time while the American/European servers had had it for nearly 6 months).
Chinaside required a special client that only took forever-and-a-half to download...damn china servers. ------------------- ნỊs uʍop əpỊsdn Support the introduction of Blaze M crystals for Amarr! |

Played on Werner as burb0t, BR25 CR1. Didn't log in for more than a year I guess, though. Could never be arsed leading squads and/or waiting around in a zerged base SOI, was too busy killwhoring, hotdropping on towers with surgile jackhammers and generally being a resecure-*****. Used to quit for months at a time and only play hardcore for 1-3 in between those, however, so only ever got some 19k kills. Even so, fun times were had. |

The game was a blast, incredibly fun.... in beta.
After that, everyone I know pretty much quit soon after.
Sanctuaries were never the same.. Population dwindled... Tons of stupid design changes. Not just that, but the concept by itself just isn't one that would hold everyone's interest forever.
I personally played as NC on the markov server through beta and then a few months into the release.
I always played as a sniper and pretty mucconsh raped. I ran an outfit for awhile that was a small group of snipers, we did pretty well for ourselves.
I actually have a lot of good memories in the game. Doing hot drops from galaxies was always a blast, just to see it, even.
A lot of the fun though was just doing quirky things. For example, I used to go onto continents (planets now?) that were mainly controlled by the other two factions (as in, NC had no bases at all), and do a /who vs and /who tr (i don't remember the exact commands)
And basically send these guys taunting messages asking them to come to a specific gate, or a coordinate, for a 1v1 duel.
Well, little did they know there were usually 1-3 other snipers sitting on standby on a hill or nearby, within line of sight.
So these clowns would show up thinking they're badass, see me standing in the bubble. I'd step out, taunt them a bit, tell them you back up if they really want to fight.
They'd step back, shoot at the bubble a bit, and as soon as they stop moving, we'd all open fire. Two sniper shots and anyone would go down (except for MAXs) if they didn't hit a medpack.
We pretty much did that all the time.
And if we weren't spending time griefing others through setups like that, we'd usually defend a base very well against group troops, or attack oncoming forces very well.
Just imagine a normal tower/base fight with all your mixture of classes and ground vehicles and the random reaver every once and awhile.
But then put together 15 snipers that are coordinating over voice comms, and it's absolutely devastating to any opposing ground forces.
Damn, makes me want to play again.
Fun times.

I wish I could have joined a sniper group like yours, though. No instakills on softies kinda sucks, especially when you can line up perfect shots. |

Riethe, nice stuff, totally agree.
I played in beta, ran an outfit in the early days on Werner, and it was total FUN. Can't forget those epic bridge battles, base defense in the rain, or going solo ninja to try and capture stuff, heart beating hard.
You're right though, it really dwindled after the first few months. I'd love to have another blast at it, but I certainly am not paying, and I refuse to be limited to BR5, there's just not enough there. If there was a sequel, or something else along similar lines, I'd be really interested.
Fun, fun times. |

Damn!! Damn Qanael Radlari!
You just unlocked so many other memories!
When I wasn't playing my sniper, I had a cloaker that used.. those.. remote detonation devices.. I forget!
Anyway, the cloaker died a lot, but it was SO much fun to plant a few bombs and bait maxes and just instapop them.
I hated dying (because as a sniper I was certed to heal myself and repair armor, so if i ever took any hits it would just be take cover/heal/back at it) and very rarely die.
But it was pretty exciting running around placing explosives and killing guys like that.
Wow, planetside was actually really fun in its prime time. I really forgot how much I enjoyed that game.

Yeah--boomers. Awesome.
This thread was made for me.
I seriously loved that game.
I really just can't bring myself to reinstall it though.
Myself and a few buddies have tried to get back into before, and it just didn't last too long.
There was always that stupid glitch where people could run into you with vehicles, and YOU'D get the damn punishment point things for it and a lot of the times they'd get like 2-3, something insignificant.
People really enjoyed abusing that.
When they put the variants in for the transport humvee things in, that was pretty fun, too. I always felt that the TR got shafted on their weapons.
Who the hell wants a machine gun when you can shoot friggen alien orb things?
The problem with the terran was all their vehicles took like 12 people to actually get all the guns firing.
And once all the seats were filled, all you ever saw were people just constantly emptying clips at trees and just shooting all over the damn place, like a loose firehouse.
The vanguard was a powerhouse if you and your partner had any experience together, voice comms always helped too.
Haha, I remember before I quit I had an entire locker full of the pulsars or whatever, the vanu machinegun.
I thought I was the coolest dude, I could just load up my fitting and have that as my alternate rifle all the time.
We used to trade vehicles and stuff too. Always fun to see blue prowlers, red vanguards, blue vanu-vehicles that I forget the names of, and so on.

haha, I remember one time we organised an "anti-war protest" on the forums.
So we all met up one evening inside a bubble on a continent I can't remember, and marched in a line through the place shouting "Cease Fire!" Was bloody hilarious.
Afterwards we all traded weapons and vehicles, etc. It was that type of crazy stuff that made the game such fun, a lot of the time.

They added a whole lot of stuff for engineers and hackers recently - you might want to have a look. Some examples:
- Deployable manned turrets
- Invisibility fields, similar to the AMS's bubble
- Cloaking and anti-vehicular automatic turrets
- Tank traps (your own empire can go through them)
As for hackers:
- Ability to jack manned vehicles
This one is pure win. Nothing like hacking a manned tank, getting in the turret and killing the previous owner and gunners. Or jumping on a plane, jacking it and have it fall on the pilot.
- Ability to install viruses in enemy bases/vehicles/deployables
The gadget you use for this can launch bolts that will severely slow down vehicles. Its other mode will let you corrupt enemy equipment - there's several options for bases, including jamming enemy radar, doubling NTU use, unlocking all doors, etc. As for deployables, it'll make them work against their own empire.
Sorry if I sound like a salesman - It would be nice to get more people in the game, especially oldtimers. |

Yeah, PS has its issues. I had a rather severe bug with my old Radeon X850XT where all the textures were completely out of place. That's one of the reasons I stopped playing for quite a while.

How's the hacker (no, not the ingame cert) situation atm? Around the time I left the speed hackers / unlimited max jetpack hackers on free accounts were really starting to **** me off severely. Also, any idea about player numbers on Werner? US pings suck too much for my connection.

As far as I've seen (mind you I don't play all that much anymore) blatant hacks are few and far between. The last time I saw a pair of VS MAXes stuck to the flight ceiling spamming the air term was maybe over 6 months ago.
Edit: No idea on the Werner situation, sorry - Europe pings suck too much for my connection. |

Yeah, I'd be interested to know about Werner too.
I'd really love to play this again, mostly for nostalgia, but to see how things have changed, if it's as much fun as it once was. I wonder if they'd do a nice 30-day free trial for us old-timers. :) |

Heh.. Hacking.
Even early beta there were graphic card tweaks you could do that would remove the "fog" that limited your vision.
There also was a way of making the "cloak" effect for AMS's and cloakers show up like bright white.
Never saw anything more serious than that, though.
Guess I wasn't around long enough for people to really break into the code and start distributing those things. |

Well, since the recent US server merge, numbers on Gemini are usually enough for at least one pop-locked continent, plus a good fight on a second continent and a cave skirmish or two. Again, no idea about Werner.

Aw, hell. That'd be enough.. if only it was the same on Werner. But if both of the US servers get those numbers now, I predict that Werner doesn't even pop lock one continent at prime time.

They killed it for me when they changed the physics, before vehicles such as the deliverer were fun, bouncy and unstable to drive and took skill and patience.
After the change all the vehicles were so dull boring, no bounce and no skill to drive them, really annoyed me.
