My ex-girlfriend had a tarantula and a snake. They were both really calm, the girl herself was actually more dangerous O.o.

If you want a tarantula you should read a book about them. Rose hair tarantula are fairly docile and a good starter terrestrial species. The ones I've seen are fairly neat with their areas and are easy to take care of make sure they have water and remove the corpse piles they make outside their nest.
Also one thing I tend to remind myself about tarantula because I am near sighted, if you notice a bald patch where they typically have hair don't stick your face to close to the thing for a better view because their hair is sort of like tiny fiber glass spears and they will kick them it at things. I'm not sure how many different types of tarantulas do this however.

Edited by: Privavarian on 18/06/2008 12:14:05 Well.. I live in Holland and the biggest spiders we have here are what.. 5 cm? they don't get bigger than that really.. however there are alot of them.
What I used to do when I was young was catch like 15 of them things and lock them up in a box about as big as a box you put your lunch in. Then wait 10 min and see who survived and kept the spider that survived in a bigger box as a pet. and after a while I catch some new spiders and do the same again and the one which survived there got to fight the other survivor.
I just realize what a filthy bastard I was during my childhood, lol. If the Enemy is in range.. So are you. |

You really should consider this documentary video before choosing whether or not to keep a spider for a pet. -------------

I have about 13 tarantulas of various species and sizes at the moment. Most are babies and not much bigger than 1-4cm or about an inch and a half. Not to say they will stay that size! My biggest and sole survivor of a pair I got as babies is about the size of the palm of my hand.
They are fairly easy pets to keep if you get some of the beginner types - Curly Haired or Chilli Rose etc. Feed them once a week, mist their tanks everyday/couple of days, depending on the species.
People seem to have more issues with the live food, that I have to keep, than the spiders, although understandably I do get a lot of "WTF why"'s!
All I would say is donÆt buy it as a pet you can ôplay withö this really isnÆt good for them, their bodies donÆt cope well with falls. I never try and handle mine, although itÆs not unknown for escape attempts whilst trying to spray or feed them!
If you do get one, do a bit of research online first or talk to a local specialist reptile store, donÆt just talk to the local ôpets-R-usö type store.

Small burrow like webs in a corner, usually near where fire ants would come in(ie mostly the windows).
