Greetings all,
I've tried today to install Eve on my new linux machine which is running Ubuntu 8.04 I've read the installation guide most thoroughly and then proceeded with the install. After downloading the .deb file and installing the starter kit I understood that i need to run the following command in the console:
Quote: /usr/bin/eve
and this, when run prints the following result:
Quote: ARGS are -GAME EveOnline-linux Looking for log.ini file. No CEDEGA_PATH; trying CEDEGA_UPDATER_PATH. /usr/lib/eve/gddb.py:26: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012.
and then times out.
The problem it would seem is that the Python versions for gddb_parser and the starter kit do not match (?) - I have run all the updates and am positive that I left nothing out. I'm not too linux-savvy and i'd like to ask what I need to do in this situation. Has anyone ever encountered this problem? Any tips?

the mismatch is not a problem, as long as the api is a higher version then the module. Which is the case here.
You need to make sure you have all necesary extra packages also installed so that means you will have to verify that you have the following packages installed: * libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4) * xlibmesa3 | libgl1 * python (>= 2.4) * python2.4-dbus * python-gtk2 (>= 2.6) * python-glade2, wget
The easiest way is probably just trying to install them. How to install extra software is easily found on the ubuntu wiki or forums.

judging that you have an nvidia card, the best option would be to get the premium graphics client for wndows and install it in wine. Heres a link on it :Wine AppDB
That should give you all the config info you need to get it runing flawlessly

How does that resolve the issue he is talking about? They bear totally no relevance to the issue the guy describes. Hey guys I am using product X and am having some problems here. I use product Y. Yeah me too, you should really use product Y.
Wine might be another option but its not what he is asking about now is it?

Understood. However, my response was based on a simple fact. As of right now - stable as linux is - it is still very difficult to use if you do not know what you are doing. I assumed that he had worked with the platform before. In which case 'having a problem with product x/ use product y' is totally applicable. I speed read at times and totally overlooked your comment about not being linux savy. Allow me to expand my explanation a little more. Currently I also use Ubuntu 8.04, and my Eve install works well. I use a dual boot system (Windows XP), with a shared data partition, and have no issues running Eve from either OS. The linux version seems to run a bit faster (proabably because of the cleaner ip stack). The current version of wine in the package repository for Ubuntu works well. There are a couple of install procedures here on the forums which will help you with a couple of gotchas (direct x dlls). For me there was very little post configuration for wine. Also have a look at the wine support database. I recommend using this over the cedega packaged version. |

Nice post and would make a lot of sense if this op was what is the better choice the official client or wine. What you speed read over is that I am not the op but just a poster. What I am trying to say is that even though you offer a valid response it in no way corresponds to the question asked by the original poster. Instead of the product X/Y comparison I made you could fill in ati/nvidia as well.
I am maybe just doing a bit of rage posting over a bit of a pet peeve, in my opinion people should post in regards to an op and not derail it into yet another discussion over official client or wine.

yes but wouldn't be the first step trying to find out why his native install is not working before suggesting alternatives?

Yes! -- in a Windows environment it would be, but in Linux and UNIX in general the answer is no. 9/10 out of times the initial solution will not work for the user (hence his or her problem in the first place) and the work-around is what gets folks cooking with gas. |
