after using the align button for a while and noticing the inability of my ship to point at something while remaining still, I'm getting rather tired of the auto-level function ships seem to have.
it seems odd how eve is so up and down oriented when it: 1. Doesn't need to be. 2. Doesn't make sense to be.
all the planets and belts and stations are facing the same way, rings are all tilted at the same angle, stations are all pointing up above the elliptic of the solar system, and asteroid belts are always horizontal rings.
why no remove that top-bottom alignment. make it so ships can face any which way, and don't have to be moving to maintain a heading. make planets like Uranus, with the rings tilted on their side. make stations and asteroid belts at angles.
It would improve immersion, make eve more interesting, and make space seem slightly more realistic. It wouldn't effect gameplay at all, and would make things much more interesting.
It wouldn't cause any additional lag, in fact it would slightly reduce it since there is no need to order the ship to level off.
There's no up in space, so why is there an up in eve? __________________________________________________ |

because then the camera would have to be completely 360 degree able as well, and you would be locked always looking at the top of your ship while the rest of space rotated around you.
that'd complicate things.

how would the current camera not be able to handle it? I seem to manage fairly well when my ship is at an angle while under power, I don't see how it would be any different while sitting still.
although the camera could use some improvement to make the movement more freeform, another axis should definitely be added. __________________________________________________ |

If you'd make it all "true to life" and for instance align all stations to the equator of the son, we'd have less pewpew cause people would be spuwing their gutts out from getting seasick in space...

Ah but the glory of pods and fake gravity is we wouldn't need all the projectile vomiting. :)
On the other subject though taking out the spacial plane would be more difficult i think from a logistics point.
1) First thing every single system in eve will need to be changed for this 2) The current system allows for many instances of the same models to be used with relatively low amount of change meaning that often the angles and such of polygons do not need to be recalculated according to the current system you are in. 3) This would make the already woefully inadequate POS structure placement system even harder to use (however would be a good excuse to get an overhaul done on the system :P)
That's all i can think of for the moment, however, i would say as a player wanting stuff I really would like being able to have this, i would like not being stuck with the up down orientation that most space based games seem to have however when you consider how the logistics of it work from CCPs end i just can't see them expending the resources to exact a relatively minor change to gameplay for the relatively large cost it will have. Course i could be totally wrong and they just delete 1 string of code and boom it all goes not flat :P

We have the "spatial plane" so that players don't get overwhelmingly disoriented.
Not being able to dictate which way is "up" would be very confusing and would take time to orient yourself with your surroundings upon jump-in or warp-in. Sig locked, I will not make fun of the forum mods |

Eve is more like a submarine simulation than a space sim. But it's the best darn submarine sim out there! -

Very true...
Otherwise we'd be able to fly forever without extra engine effort. But our "space" provides resistance like water instead of like vacuum. There's a ton of things in Eve that are more in common with submarines and waterborne activity, then there is with spaceships.
WHICH IS WHY CCP needs to get off their duff, and put some more spacey crap! Comets, nebulae, Black Holes, something!
