Really, I honestly don't know. The official release date for 'Wanted' in the UK is the 27th of June, Friday. However there is an advanced screening today. Its the whole movie right? Or just some sort or preview?
Constructive help appreciated because I've got a feeling that I will have flames licking my boots when I post this.

By 'advance' they mean that the particular screening is being shown in advance of it's national, official release date. It is the whole movie in it's entirety. Back in the day, if you got to an advance showing they didn't tend to have the usual ads/trailers before...now it's the same as seeing it after it's released. In the UK, officially films are released on Friday, but previews show on Thursday..some sneaky cinemas put the big titles on at 0:01 on the Thursday...making it an Orange Wednesday Thursday -------------

Im not looking forward to Wanted, the previews alone show its nothing like the comic, though I expect its going to do well as it has Jolie in it. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Sucks to be you! I'd never heard of the comic, so to me it's just a new film that looks totally awesome - Originally by: Grarr Dexx YES PLEASE TOUCH MY ABSOLUTION

What sucks about it? I've seen two trailers for it, and haven't seen or read anything else about it. Unless every cool scene in the film was in those two trailers, it's going to be great just for the awesome stunts. The story may be a little unoriginal, but not much really, and a formulaic story is hardly enough to prevent a film from being good. - Originally by: Grarr Dexx YES PLEASE TOUCH MY ABSOLUTION

While I'll probably go see it, I'll give you one reason in form of a quote... "Curve the bullet."

Yes the movie plot has no relation to the "bad guys killed all the superheroes" and parallel worlds plot of the original comic. But it still promises to be an enjoyable, mindless action flick with plenty of over the top special effects, cheesy dialogue and one-liners. In other words, a movie that you can happily watch after suspending disbelief. Anyone who goes into this expecting high theatre is probably delusional and also writes letters to their local paper under the pseudonym "Angry in Manchester".

So does an advanced screening cost more? If not, and it is just the same as waiting an extra day, why call it something different? Why not just open the film the day before, lol.

Often an advanced screening is a promotional event. "the 97th caller will receive two passes to an advanced screening of Movie, starring Actor and Actress, coming out on Day!" Several radio stations, online give-outs and the like can fill a selected theater fairly well, and usually for a lower cost then "buying" commercial time in those medias.
Just as important.. There is now a large group of people who a) wanted to see the movie and b) feel Special because they saw it first. They can rush to tell friends and internet blogs how much they enjoyed themselves, helping create buzz and increasing the all important (overhyped) First Weeked/First Day/First Minute sales records.
*this is how it works in my area (US), so far as I have seen and talked with a theater owner about, your mileage may vary by country
As for 00:01 Friday showings, I like them! I am often stuck working friday nights, but I can stay up a bit later the night before and catch the new big thing.

I take it your the type who doesnt care if someone takes the idea of someone else and changes it to the point that the spirit of the orginal story was killed off long ago and the only thing that the new creation shares is the name of the title which was deliberately done in an attempt to catch fans of the comic and get them to part with their cash.
In my opinion this is going to be your A typical hollywood film. Guns, explosions, Jolie's naked back with maybe a side breast shot for the 13-19 year old male teen bracket and of course the movie will rake in hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide while leaving the fans of the orginal work ****ed off. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

That would be like caring about the weird guy in my town that likes to walk around in a dress. I don't particularly like it, but there's nothing I can do to stop it so I may as well accept that it's going to carry on that way.
They may well not be doing the story justice, but if they make something that I find entertaining out of it then so be it. How many films of books/comics can you name that did justice to the original? Of those, how many of the originals were "mainstream" and how many were "obscure with a cult following"?
You could think positively: if the film does well then it will attract more people to the original, possibly making way for a better take on a film of it sometime in the future.
Until then: sucks to be you, with them ruining your precious story, while I'm free to enjoy a mindless action/stunts film. Ignorance is bliss, as they say! - Originally by: Grarr Dexx YES PLEASE TOUCH MY ABSOLUTION

Honestly? its hard to explain why i think it will suck.. the bit where she catches the guy in her car while skidding in some sort of 360 maneuver? doesn't make me go oooooooo effects+stunts.. just makes me cringe at the awfulness, and the whole curve the bullet thing looks like it would really annoy me.. meh...

Sooo if they made a movie "loosely based" on say, EvE, where it doesnĘt even focus on the main point, completely changes who the main characters are, adds a race no one has even heard of, and takes place on a planet without so much of a frame of the night sky, but because its name was EvE, you would go see it if it had tons of special effects and partial nudity? Boy I guess what they say is true, you CAN make money if you pander to the lowest common denominator . -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Yeah, I probably would watch it. Just because something isn't the way you would do it, or even the way you want it, doesn't mean that it can't be enjoyable. If it does turn out to be absolute garbage, then at worst you have only wasted a few hours and a few units of your local currency on it.
Most films aren't rubbish, per se (some are, but they can normally be spotted a long way off). If you forget whatever completely arbitrary rules you have for what makes a film "good", and just enjoy it for what it is, then even Star Wars Episode 1 can be enjoyable.
As for making decent stories, if you want a good and full story you're better off reading a book. For the vast majority of stories, the constraints of a <2h long film don't allow enough detail to do it justice. Books can spend pages describing a scene where someone enters a room, shooting loads of bad guys. It might make a cool scene in a film, but it'll be over in 15 seconds.
I guess I'm trying to say that films will always tend towards the mindless action sort, as that is appealing to the lowest common denominator and films cost an awful lot to make so they have to do that. Why go around saying every film that doesn't turn out precisely as you wanted it is rubbish? You could just enjoy it for what it is. - Originally by: Grarr Dexx YES PLEASE TOUCH MY ABSOLUTION

I am not saying that I want to watch it a certain way. IĘm all for artistic licensing to a -degree-. Books, comics, games etc can never be fully translated to movie/show format, as you pointed out it just doesnĘt work due to time constraints. What I am saying however is this movie, and quite a few like it, take the source material from the original artist, cherry pick what they like, then fill the rest of the 1, 2 1/2 hours or even 3 or more hours with guns, explosions, cars, women and booze.
The original comics are about a guy who is pretty much a no body, finds out hes the son of essentially a super villain, enters that world, gets desensitized to violence, kills his best friend, leaves his girl friend and essentially takes his fathers place with no intent to "save 1000 by killing 1", quite the opposite in fact.
Movies HAVE proven to be able to convey stories, great stories in fact and not have to completely abandon the original source material, the LOTR trilogy comes to mind. I could sight dozens of other movies but there wouldnĘt be any point.
If you cant respect the work of the original artist when you convert a title to a movie then why bother? My only conclusion is that the director and studio does it to lure people in already familiar with the work to get their money.
If your into that sort of thing, hey more power to you. You got a huge selection of movies that repeat the same thing over and over and over again. I got over that sort of thing a long time ago, these days I try to find something that can actually tell a story thatĘs you know, good? IE something that doesnĘt rely heavily on special effects and a womanĘs cleavage.
