Greetings pod pilots!
With the militias now operating in full force, I have noticed that the makeup of the militias is far from homogeneous along racial lines.
I would like to hear from pilots that are fighting in the "enemy's" militia; Caldari pilots in the Gallente militia (and vice versa), Amarr pilots in the Minmatar militia (and vice versa).
What prompted you to join that particular militia? Was it politics? Convenience?
Thanks for your time!

Hello again, Mister Balteus. I'm glad to see you're keeping busy. I have a question about this article:
I assume from your statement that you are going to be focusing exclusively on those pilots who are fighting for their adopted homelands as opposed to their original ones. In the interests of journalistic neutrality, do you have any plans to run a sister article representing the opposed points of view of those pilots who are working on behalf of the culture they were born to? -

Morals aren't unique to one race. But to the question, I suppose politics is the answer, if you can call wanting the entire amarr relgion done away with political. The faith and zealous devotion to it is the chief cause of many of the problems with the empire. Done away with, it my flourish again... without having to climb over so many lives to do it. |

I've never much liked the hypocrisy or The Republic, and have spent the most important part of my career working for the Angel Cartel - As such the Republic and Federation don't like me much, which suits me. After a stint of loaning myself out to numerous Amarr corporations, I've found the skills I have picked up from living in Curse perfectly suit the current state of affairs in the Amarr Militia - plus, added bonus - I get to kill more Republicans than usual \o/. Win/win situation for me. |

I'll bite.
There were several motivations to fight for the Matari Tribes. In shortest phrase, it made sense.
For over a year, I have operated as an outlaw, working mainly but not exclusively in low security amarrian and caldari regions. This is out of spite of a childhood full of the horrors that are accepted as daily life in amarrian culture; from blind religion to slavery. This was the first motivation; a motivation to work against the Amarrian and, to a lesser extent, Caldari establishments.
A second motivation is heritage. My father was a Khanid businessman with an agenda against the empire, who forever deceived Amarrian authorities. My mother was a brutor. This obviously sees me motivated to help towards the freedom of the minmatar people in addition to stopping the oppression of a forced religion.
If it were not enough that I am of half minmatar blood myself, I am love with a sebiestor, Yendaj by name. She is a long lost childhood friend who I reunited with early into the upstart of my corporation "Heretic Army".
In over a year of outlaw activity in low-security space, I always longed to do more damage to the empires themselves. In effect, when Heretic Nation commissioned the creation of Heretic Militia, we struck two slavers with one khumaak; not only am I now fightign on the front that is liberating the Bleak Lands, but I can do a large ammount of damage to the factions I despise so much.
By CONCORD's records, I am an amarrian. But in truth, I could not be more opposed to the corrupt government, the archaic caste system, and it's bigoted belief system.
Why fight for the Minmatar militia? I do not see any good reason not to. |

Is easy to say why Ammatar fight for the Empire. We've been hit by a shock attack at Jarizza, which even if not executed by the tribals, seems to have happened with their consent and approval.
Looks like any dreams of peace are just that - dreams.
I'm fighting now for the Amarr Militia to show that the matari people ain't all scum and that we can't all be written off as irredeemable or vermin. The matari people will be Reclaimed and a golden era of peace will come for both Amarrian and Matari.
One day. I know it's lifetimes away, but one day. |

Morals do vary from one culture to another. What is right to a Civire may not be right to an Intaki. And this seems to be a point missed by many capsuleers. Amarrian morality is intimately linked with Amarrian religion. That someone raised and taught by the Amarr turns on their upbringing means they disagreed with their upbringing and culture.
There are Caldari who find Amarrian (Khanid) morality and religion to be quiet enlightening and better than their own upbringing amongst the corporate culture of the State.
---
Magnus Balteus there is that interesting side of why are there Federation citizens joining directly (not merely assisting) Minmatar forces (and vice verse) and why there are former Caldari employees directly joining the Crusade (and vice verse). What about those Caldari fighting with the Minmatar or those Gallente fighting with Amarr? |

The first thing I need to get out of the way is that I wasn't born in the State. None of my family were, we're from a low-sec system in the Republic called Eifer, near the State but not bound by its laws. This means my sisters and I have had a lot of freedom to choose our own ideologies without being influenced by a goverment, so those thinking about calling me a traitor should check its definition in the dictionary.
I've admired the Federation since I was a young girl. The amount of individual liberty their citizens enjoy, their history of civil rights, and a normally benevolent government is unique to New Eden. Out of all the nations in EVE, I believe the Gallente model is the cluster's best chance at a peaceful future, and while Malkalen shook my faith in them for a moment, I eventually came to the conclusion that it was the action of one man, not a nation. My Gallente friends denounced the attack just as much as I did, and offered assistance to those hit by the tragedy - instead of celebrating it, they mourned with me. They cared about people of another race.
How does that compare to Heth's State? Gallente, Intaki, and Jin-Mei being rounded up into camps, stripped of their belongings at the border, and treated like criminals for just being non-Caldari. One man has been able to blind an entire civilization by appealing to their sense of history and vengeance, calling for fighting to honor the dead (which will happen to make more dead). The State doesn't care about anyone but themselves, and that is why I have to fight them - the Caldari were once viewed as a group of rebels with a cause, but now? Invaders and racists, ruled by a dictator, not a leader.
Look, I'm not heartless. I don't like shooting at other Caldari, I really don't, but if someone's sided with Heth, they're supporting the destruction of my race and its identity. I believe its my responsibility as a Civire woman to remove Heth from power - not only that, but the Federation needs me right now. These are among its darkest hours in history, and if I turned my back on them simply because they were fighting my people, I may be indirectly aiding the destruction of the Gallente, and I can't do that.

I'm not a part of any of these militias, but I do wish to comment. It may make me feel better.
After many years of fighting for the best interests of the Caldari people, the Liberal bloc, and emphasizing in speech and deed the importance of international cooperation and mediation, I find myself distraught at recent events. I feel there are powers at work behind this war beyond anyone's understanding, and not one of the four so called "Empire" governments are serving their constituencies well. We are being manipulated; lies and set ups fabricated so that our deepest and perhaps most irrational sentiments can be played upon.
The State I come from is no longer one I recognize. I was raised in a middle-class Ishukone family. I met few discontent workers, even those earning much lower wages than myself. I saw immediately through my education the value of cooperation through trade and diplomacy. My parents came from different bloodlines. My mother was Achur, my father a Deteis, their having met while he was stationed under the CN in Saisio.
Maybe that facilitated a wider world view, something more people should have. I'm roughly fluent in Gallentean. There was little bad talk of those people. I made friends with a few Intaki.
Regardless of my history with Ishukone after I became a pilot, I grieve for Otro Gariushi and what the State has lost because of his death. It has lost its sense of balance. It has lost reason. The economy is hurting no longer only because the major players are at war. Worst of all, the State's government has been usurped by a ravenous dictator with questionable financing and blind hatred for the Gallenteans. He blames them for corrupting Caldari CEOs when it is he who has defaced our government. He may have made the State strong once again, but for the wrong reasons, and without understanding that the corporations needed reform, not an iron fist.
The Caldari people could not see through the Malkalen disaster. That is understandable, very few people would be able to. But I see a State that has lost its simultaneously calm and collected voice in the face of adversity. It instead rattles sabres of war and feels threatened at every little advance, even though it has advanced itself. It has reclaimed a planet by force that it could have negotiated with shared prosperity.
Perhaps it was I who was out of touch with the State, but if I was, I don't wish to be a part of it.
The Angel Cartel offers me shelter from the bigoted and racist nature of this war. Our morals may be questionable, but at least we live and work together, all races, for a common purpose. We are resolute, we are strong, but we cross the pond without making a ripple. This is more like the State I knew than the State as it exists today.

I am also a Caldari fighting for the Federation, but it's mostly due to my own reasons rather than political.
I work for a Gallente corporation and that is why I fight for them. I do believe, however, that Heth is not a man I would follow given the choice. He is xenophobic and genocidal. Such a man is not fit to lead a nation. Such a man is not even fit to run a corporation.

I moved the corp to Caldari Prime to get away from the State. The Federation welcomed us, gave us opportunities, and made us feel at home. Since then I've tried to repay that debt.
When Heth invaded, I had to join up and help defend the Federation. Those megacorps are never going to stop as long as there's something else they can grab for. They've got Caldari Prime, they're raiding through Placid and Essence, and they've got a fleet threatening the Gallente homeworld. Now it's them or us, and I'm going to make sure we're the ones who survive.

Edited by: Esna Pitoojee on 01/07/2008 01:08:58 I am not actively participating in any of the militias, but like Ms. Sakoda, I wish to let my voice be heard.
The Amarr Empire has grown rotten. The light of God has become sullied, hidden behind years of higher Holders living in decadence while those below them - minor Holders, the lower castes, and races of slaves - have had to support thier lives and mop up after them, like how one must support and clean up after livestock. 'Morality' has become a tool of the powerful to keep the status quo, with commoners and slaves below them.
Simply put, I believe that the Empire needs a good kick in the rear to wake it up to what has happened, how far it has strayed from God's word. If the Empire realises what it has done to itself and institutes some long-needed reforms, then this war will have served its sad purpose. If we do not reform ourselves, then I believe that the Empire, as it stands, will be destroyed, and that it will deserve it. Who knows? Perhaps a new Amarr Empire, more truthful to God's word then the current one, will be born from the ashes.
That is why I have not joined any of the militias. |

Camaraderie. Good friends I have made over time and their friendship, I value more than petty nationalistic ideals or allegiances. They have for years put up with me, and now it's my turn to put up with them. In fact, this rag-tag bunch we've grown into is like a family now. Dysfunctional one, but a family nonetheless. I've been with them ever since I was a fresh rookie, and there's no way in hell that's going to change anytime soon. -------- MAIDS. Now with black, frilly uniforms. |

I have also not yet taken up arms for my race, but in my view; I see the Gallente as our enemies, as they tried to oppress the Caldari people, blocking our path to freedom and independance, and their (until recently...) occupation of our own homeworld I also resent.
Having said that, I am not particularly comfortable being allied with the Amarr empire. I find their treatment of the Minmatar disgusting, and would dearly love to see them fall.
So in short; I am loyal to the Caldari state, but not to its unfortunate choice of ally, and have no quarrel with the Minmatar (and an understanding that their alliance with the Gallente is needed for their survival, and resistance against the Amarr, unfortunately)

Once our corp had decided that we wanted a taste of faction warfare we did a vote on it to see which race we would join. Eventhough we had to grind some missions to make it happen, Minmatar prevailed by a landslide.
So it wasnt politicaly motivated and it also wasnt convenient, we just felt that the Minmatars were the coolest of the bunch with all that history with amarrians as their former evil slavers.
Some race specific bonuses for a millitia gang's make up may go a long way towards encouraging racially uniformed gangs. So for example if you were in caldari millitia and just happened to have a caldari ship you would get some sort of bonus. an incentive.

I'm not fighting at the moment -- the Kingdom hasn't made an official announcement of war.
I'm not off helping the Amarr because, well, I really don't like their attitude. Oh sure, they are arrogant and all by nature, but it's not so much that as it the date stamped on your CONCORD personnel record. If CONCORD hasn't had you on file for 5 years then you can't really form an opinion in their eyes. I'll be damned if I fight alongside them. |

I am aware this question wasn't directed at those like me who do not participate. Nevertheless I think it is on topic if I reply.
Reason one for not participating: "the Royal Khanid Navy remains on tactical alert" and so do I as a citizen of the Kingdom.
Reason two: I will not now and not in the future fly alongside "ants and vermin". The amarrian cause is lost before it begins in the very moment we allow foreign scum in crucial roles.

Mr Balteus, I like several other caldari who have already spoken, choose not to fight for or against the State.
Unlike them I had the upbringing of a Military Tube Child, bred, raised and used by the State to their ends until such time as we earned our place, our name and freedom.
My loyalty is to my three "sisters" and one "brother" left of my creche thusly my military unit.
They though have taken sides, out of love, hatred or blind loyalty.
For myself and my crews of mixed humans, I can not choose a side.
I see this as the current four empires, with collusion from CONCORD, to keep busy a resource they could not control, that was and is a threat to their orders and to be able to fight wars without getting their hands truly dirty. Us the pod pilots, capsuleers.
That every little bit we lose in dying and rebirth does fuel our baser instincts and many of us are far to ready to give into it as the current fighting shows.
I think that if capsuleers kept their ISK, stop transporting goods, services, personnel and all that goes toward modern life, the empires would crumble and listen to terms.
We are truly the ones who control the lifeblood of the empires. We could be the greatest instrument of peace every to be given to mankind. Yet now we are tools for lesser people who just desire conflict and blood for their own means and to stroke their own egos.
