So I just started EvE; finished playing through the trial account and bought the full game. I read boat loads on the eve-wiki, the forums, and other places while mining so I know decent amount. Of course I'm still very naive, and one of the things I'm unaware of is the role that tech 3 cruisers fill. From what I've read, they seem like a trump card. If somebody rolls up in a Tengu or Loki, everybody not in a tech 3 boat is pretty much dead 1v1. Is that accurate? I mean, they're 300-500m and take like a month and a half to train for, so one would assume...
Thanks guys. |

The idea behind the T3 line up is that they arnt put in any one role. The ship fitting and bonuses can be changed by the owner based on the subsystems employed. This alows the pilot to tailor fit their ship for the job at hand and gives exactly what they want (within reason)
As with any ship though they arnt perfect, and can only be as good as your fitting. So when you say a month or two to fly one your (most likely) not even close to flying it for another 6 months to a year to get all the weps modules and fitting skills trained to keep the ship alive.
Next is the real cost. The T3 hull at 250 to 500the is the hull without any subs. Just to fly it or sit in it you then need one (at least) of each sub. Those will run anywhere from another 30 to 100 a pop. So now your pushing in on 1the bill before putting a single module on her yet.
My 2old isk, your better off making an investment towards BCs. Particularly with the tier system chamges. Cheaper hull to lose and much more forgiving to fly with low skills. Then get your core, integrity, and gunnery/mis certs done. By then a 1bil ship will be just your next logical step. |

One thing you will learn early in EVE is that there are no trump cards. Yes, T3s are very good but you can easily fit out other ships to kill them if you know what youre up against and how to do it.
I would highly recommend not flying a T3 with crappy skills. They are not a beginner's ship and when you lose them, it hurts. |

The gist of T3 ships is that they basically take the "specialties" of their respective race's T2 cruisers, dumb them down slightly, and allow you to mix and match the bonuses. So what you are paying for is to be a "jack-of-all-trades." This is the intention of T3 ships though.
In reality, people mix and match the bonuses to do some absolutely insane things with them (ex. ~500k "brick" Proteus, 100MN AB Tengu/Legion, "Vagabond-Rapier" Loki, etc.).
However, T3s are not without their Achilles heel(s).
Generally speaking...
- T3s tend to either have "active" or "brick" tanks. -- "Active" tanks die easily against energy neutralizers -- "Brick" tanks tend to be slow and/or have anemic DPS
- Cloaky-fits tend to have sub-par DPS compared to their class counterparts (sans Proteus). - There are actually very few "viable" fits that people use on their T3s allowing you to more easily gauge what said ships can and cannot do. Not really. Speaking strictly from personal experience, a shield Loki can, very easily, die to a single shield gank Cane or a dual-web nanodrake. Especially if it's cloaky but chooses to initiate the fight anyway. |

a decently fit tengu will cost around 1.5 to 2.5 billion total. if it gets jumped by two 50mil canes it will likely die. |

Thanks guys. the price you said is about half of what a well fit t3 is, the time it takes to train for one is twice as long for a good fit, and they aren't absolutely perfect at 1v1 because there are so many different builds available. imo I see them as the convertibles of eve, you can open the roof when it's sunny and close it when it rains, but you wouldn't buy one in Canada because there are cars that fit a better purpose there. |
