alright let me start off by saying I suck at linux. so anything you tell me needs to be as simple as posible. I just started using linux so lets see if i can get this fixed.
I play eve from windows alot. well the system i'm on now runs ubuntu 8.04. I have cedega 6.0 (i belive i know its 6. something) and wine 1.1.0 now I tried to use eve through wine, and I've tried to use the linux version but nothing I do works. I basicly get it loaded and running to a black screen. then it goes to the log in screen before crashing. Any help at all to fix this would help. It may be something with another program that i'm missing or something. I don't know. |

Well.
I did encounter the "loginscreen -> crash after ~5 seconds" when using the "official linux client". Wich is a cedega based one. I was able to get into the game after setting it up like this:
Unfortunately the official client has weird rendering of portraits (whitish) and the "all space is white" problem.
"working" approach: * Install wine. * Download premium client. * Doubleclick the installer - follow install instructions. * copy arial.ttf to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/ (ubuntu: strg+h in nautilus shows hidden ".wine" folder. * start eve * disable premium graphics in settings
This worked like a charm. Unfortunately I have really low fps due to some weird "software emulated mode". Probably some driver crap, since my ATI x700 is stoneage by now. :/
Good luck

do you by chance have an ATI card (radeon X1xxx or newer) with ATI binary drivers ?
if yes than you are out of luck. I am trying to get mine working since some time and still it crashes after splash screen. --- SIG --- CSM: your support is needed ! |

Edited by: Sophia Stormbringer on 30/06/2008 14:33:09 Thanks, 3d acceleration seems to be present and working, unfortunately I don't have and never had an ATI/AMD card. So I just did some reading up on it, and I can offer you some things you can try out.
The ati config utility: sudo /opt/bin/aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf Maybe it offers something worth changing, unfortunately I've never seen the config utility running.
If you see this option somewhere in the utility: "UseFastTLS" set it to the value 2 or "compatible". If not, make a backup copy of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf, launch an editor with sudo, for example sudo gedit (if you have gnome) and edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
find the line called Section "Device", then modify, or if doesnt exist, add the line
Option "UseFastTLS" "2"
so afterward it should look something like this:
Section "Device" Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]" Driver "fglrx" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Option "DesktopSetup" "horizontal" Option "VideoOverlay" "on" Option "UseFastTLS" "2" Option "EnablePrivateBackZ" "on" EndSection
No need to add/delete or modify any line other than "UseFastTLS"
Save the changes and restart Xorg
If for some reason the changes won't let you start X again, hit ctrl+alt+F1, log in and copy the backed up xorg.conf back to /etc/X11
sudo cp /place/of/backupfile/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf sudo /etc/init.d/xdm restart

also somthing I failed to mention: copy the directx dlls (i.e. from a working windows) into the ./wine/drive_c/windows/system32 folder. The directx redist exe did NOT work for me since wine1.0
as to the cashing at the start:
in console: winecfg -> audio at the bottom check "emulate"

yea the first comand didn't work so i'm stuck there... dunno... i vote just kill the linux monster and replace it with windows ^.^

also about the sound emulation, I think he meant run winecfg and then follow the menus he listed. --- SIG --- CSM: your support is needed ! |

The correct name of the dll is d3dx9_35.dll --- Not happy with something in EVE? An emo whine will doubtless help your cause. |
