Last night I started my virusscanner on my second pc (windows XP). After a while I saw that it kept checking tons of files with a .jpg extension As I do not have that many pictures on that PC I wondered where they were located.
Turned out to be this route:
C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\ application data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_eve2_tranquility\cache\pictures\characters\chat
This directory has 99 maps and each maps contains tons of pictures. But also a lot of other maps had lots of files in it Turned out to consume almost 3 GIG, few 100k files and a few 100 maps in total.
I was not to happy when noticing this, can someone please explain WHY is it needed that this stuff gets written on my HD?

Stuff like this should be optional, and CCP should know better than to not provide the end user the option to choose where to store all this stuff. |

EVE is actually pretty good about stuff like this.
SOE are notorious for multiple copies of thier games. Between Program Files, Program Data and User App data and temp folders I had 5 copies of 2 games that I didn't even have installed in the Programs list. |

The nasty thing is that it makes my virusscanner run exceptional long. So I did some more reading on the interwebs and it seems that there was a lot written about it already. Most conclusions seem that CCP is not so good at programming and unable to fix stuff like this. However there is also someone who wrote a "EVE Cache Monitor" tool. But I rather not download such files.
Quote from that website:
Quote:So, what I was seeing was a BORKED cache system that appeared to expire the cache files based how long that file had been on the drive and didnGÇÖt bother to consider how MANY cache files were in the directory. Rather than come up with a viable, working cache, which they should have done years ago, CCP placed this really cool button on the client. If you hit GÇÿESCGÇÖ youGÇÖll see a tab that saysGǪ. get thisGǪ RESET SETTINGS/Clear all cache files. I know, thatGÇÖs Icelandic computer geek so IGÇÖll translate, GÇ£We havenGÇÖt figured out how to make our clients cache run properly, so when it does get BORKED, just clicky here.GÇ¥ Unfortunately, it requires that you restart your client every time you do it. |

Mine barely ticks over 300mb, so I don't see the problem you have.
However, on a side note, with the http://gr2decode.altervista.org/files/gr2_viewer.zip <-- GR2 file viewer here, I can open all the mesh files of any ship I looked at recently ingame without needing to screw around with the games own packed files. |

Op out- WHY IT TAKE SO LONG FOR PROFILE PICS AND STUFF TO LOAD WAAAAA
Damned if you do, damned it you don't.
It would be nice if you could select a location for all this stuff though. |

Set your virus scanner to ignore that directory.
If you delete them they'll just come back slowly as you travel in the game.
Heaven forbid that your game actually download and store information locally in order to speed up the game. That would be just horrible programming. In fact, we should just download the entire client each time we play so that disk space is saved. If you're reading my sig you cannot claim ignorance, only stupidity or apathy, if you don't go VOTE now for CSM7. |

This. All good virus scanners can have a whitelist of files or directories you trust. They then exclude that from the regular scan unless you explicitly select a full scan. |
