Hey
I am currently writing a story within the EVE universe. I was wondering what kind of prefixes that the ships use. Like the Gallente mothership ">FNS< Wandering Saint" that deliberatly crashed into the Ishukone HQ in Malkalen. I would also like to know what the various prefixes stand for.
If anyone has this info, I would be most thankfull.

for the Amarrian Empire it could be IS (Imperial Ship) or HMS (His/Her Majesties Ship)
for the Minmatar Repulic RS (Republic Ship) or RNS (Republic Naval Ship) or RNV (Republic Naval Vessel) ------------------------ CEO Walks Forever Trade Inc

For Caldari I'm thinking State Navy Service, same goes for the Federal/Federation Navy Service. Not sure about Matari
Anyway GL with your story

HIMS, actually -- kings and queens get His/Her Majesty, emperors and emperoresses are His/Her Imperial Majesty. ________________________________ This is not a signature. |

FNS likely stands just for Federation Navy's Ship (or something like that).
Khanid Kingdom is easy, it'd be HMS.
For Amarr, there's a tradition within PIE to name ships TES (the Emperor's Ship) but personally I find this quite crude. (By the same model, we'd have TUSS - the United States' Ship.) My Amarr alts use at times HMS (hm, HIMS does sound nice, though) and INA (Imperial Navy Auxiliary, non-combatants).
For the Caldari, I'd be willing to be that there's no national prefix, but rather corp prefixed. I.e. we'd have SuVee, CN (Caldari Navy), LD, KK... (CCP, any possibility of fixing KK so that it's corp ticker would be KK, not KC?) Add an 'S' for ship if you like, or 'V' for vessel.
No ideas about Minmatar. Given the recent development, tribal prefixes might be more common to Republic Fleet.

If I am not mistaken, the following are the accepted designations for actual naval vessels today.
USS - United States Ship HMS - His/Her Majesty's Ship HIMS - His/Her Imperial Majesty's Ship (Actual words were Schiff Seiner Imperialen Majestat or something like that, I dont spell things in Germanic languages well, but it translates to English as His Imperial Majesty's Ship or so I was told)
The common things in all this is the "Ship" part, so:
FNS = Federation Navy/Naval Ship CNS = Caldari Navy/Naval Ship --Also possibly CSNS - Caldari State Naval Ship INS = Imperial Naval Ship --also possibly IANS - Imperial Amarrian Navy Ship RNS = Republic Navy Ship
Since the Empire and the Khanid Kingdom are both monarchies however, you could be historically correct in putting a "HIMS = His Imperial Majesty's Ship for the Amarr, and a HMS = His Majesty's Ship for the Khanid.
Just my two ISK.

Edited by: Mithfindel on 10/07/2008 06:52:09 Also, while the Republic Fleet is technically a navy, it's still called just a fleet. I assume this could be justified with the Fleet being mainly the big guns, while tribal fleets and the Republic Security Services bring lighter sections.
So, we do have Amarr Navy (Imperial Navy in the text in the logo), Caldari Navy, Federation Navy and Republic Fleet. And technically Jove Navy, too, but can't say we'd know too much about that one. These form the armed forces of the "big five".
CONCORD's "navy" is called DED, Directive Enforcement Division. (I believe "ded" is also what happens to you when accidentally firing on, say, a mining can that wasn't yours.) The Mandate has Ammatar Fleet, Kingdom calls its military the Royal Khanid Navy, Intaki have their Space Police... and well, then we're going to the pirate factions, really.
Technically the Guardian Angels could be considered a mercenary military (Angels serving the Serpentis as security forces). But if mentioning them, then better mention also Mordu's Legion (Pure Blind, Intaki mercenaries affiliated with the Caldari State) and perhaps even True Power (Sansha's Nation military).
Edit: And oh, previously there have been other prefixes, too - I think German Kriegsmarine had their own prefix, and at times FNV has been used by the boats of my home country's maritime forces.

Maybe us Ammatar could use TEAS (The Emperor's Ammatar Ship) or something similar. Just to make sure our matari-designed ships don't get fired on by our amarr friends. |

I think that TES creates a precedent for Amarr ships. TEAS also works for Ammatars, given how Commonwealth nations add on to HMS with, say, A for Australian.
FNS (Federation Navy Ship) is canon. CNS makes a lot of sense for the no-nonsense Caldari.
The Minmatar might use Tribal as one word, but then again, the Fleet has such a strong connection with the Republic that when the Parliament dissolved, the Fleet briefly took over. So the Minmatar would probably use RFS.
The Khanids would be most likely to employ HMS. See, if you check the list of Khanid corporations, there is no corporation that is obviously the government. But I think that the RKN fills this role. Evidence: - The RKN has the same logo as the Kingdom itself. - The RKN owns majority shares in all other Khanid corporations. - Assuming one of the existing Khanid corporations is the government, look at them. We have a research firm, a shipping corporation, a ship-building corporation, and a military.
My conclusion is that the RKN is heavily tied into the Khanid government, to the point that it is via the RKN that Khanid II exerts his authority. Makes sense, since initially the Khanid Kingdom would have consisted solely of its military. So they would absolutely name their ships HMS after their king. ____________________________________ Caldari by birth, Minmatar by citizenship.
