Who really really uses these anymore? Sure maybe in missions...maybe. But honestly? C'mon.
Me and my corp mates were having random talks about things in EvE and I brought up defender missiles and how they could be better improved and *gasp* useful.
At the current point in time, they work like F.O.F. missiles. They go after any missile coming at you and you only.
However, why not make them go after any missile on the grid (within a certain range of course). Bring a tanked up Drake to the field loaded with defenders and bam, a great addition to a gang going after a predominately missile using force.
Hell, make a specific ship for this, whatever, just give defenders an interesting use on the pvp front aside from saving your own ass only.
Also, yes, I know, "but they'll go after your friend's missiles too?" yes, that'd keep them from being too overpowered. They'd make a great addition to a gun fleet. Or hell, make a specific module for the defenders to be launched from, so there cant be too many per ship. Whatever.
What do you all think? ---------------------------------------

I like your ideas. I would be a little concerned about people becoming even more hesitant to use Caldari ships in PVP for anything but EWar. Still, I agree that defender missiles should be made more useful. A specific module for them isn't a bad idea either, though it would obviously need balancing.

Of course, I'm just tossing out ideas I had off the top of my head. I don't care enough to sit down and sweat bullets thinking out balance issues. I'll leave that up to whoever thinks the general idea is worthy of such attention. ---------------------------------------

I came up with the same idea, though I thought distinguishing between friendly and enemy missiles would be better, after all, modern militaries can tell which missiles in the air are theirs and which arnt, so they know which to try and shoot down.

The thread I made. I really do like the idea of ships being able to cover friendlies :)

Its an old idea, but it would be the Death of Missile ships, especially long range missile ships.
Every fleet would have a Cerberus or three, with Assault Launchers fitted.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

That pretty much hit the nail head on. Any ship with a spare highslot and a missile slot would fit a rocket launcher and negate a huge amount of dps for practically no fitting investment.

while defender missiles are quite useless, missiles themselves aren't really all that hot at the moment either ------ I'll make a sig later. |

I was thinking about this also as I use them in my EWAR setups.
Effectively I think that Defender missiles are a very important feature. I think missiles should be automatically targeted, and manually targeted by clicking on them. Once targeted each size of targeted missile (Rocket, Standard, Heavy, Heavy Assault, Cruise and Torp) should require a different type of defender missile to destroy in one shot. (damage type only dealt by corresponding defender missile type.
The defender should be able to fire defender missiles at any targeted missile as long as it is hostile to itself or a member of its fleet.
This would add variation, skill, planning, reaction and targeting speed / range to the forum, thus creating a challenging, yet highly useful support role in any fleet.
My 2 pence worth. "Hell hath no fury like 3 women scorned... or mine."

I agree. But making a dedicated ship for such a thing (weak but able to put out a nice amount of defenders perhaps) or a specific module with strict fitting requirements. ---------------------------------------

Any of these ideas sound good? ---
Don't take my rantings personally. I may just be arguing the topic... unless you're saying something stupid, and then I mean every word. |

Another suggestion. Perhaps these 'special' defenders we've come up with would be suited for logistics ships only? I dunno, what do you all think? ---------------------------------------

If you allow ships to cover one another with defender missiles, you are going to have to put other highslot items in game that can counter turrets equally effectively and are used on gangmates.
Like a projected shield that causes 33% of all projectile shots to be deflected, or a heavy-ion cloud generator that causes 33% of all laser shots to be dispersed harmlessly, or a projected magnetic field that causes 33% of rails and blasters to be rendered harmless.
The likelihood of all of the above is very low.
