I have heard some people from large space claiming PvP aliiances say that Raven is good for only that, since they don't mission run, rarely hunt and there are better ships for PvP.
What skills and fitting are necessary for such Raven?
t2 Cruise missiles? long target range (250 km)?

I would think torps would work better... but I don't remember the diameter of a large pos. At any rate, the Raven is a top notch PVP battleship these days.

Huh ? No way. Torpedoes all the way, baby. It's all about the DPS. Besides, Arby Siege launchers are dirt cheap nowadays, and faction torps are reasonably cheap too. Heck, high-damage T2 torps (a dime a dozen) and T2 launchers are also a good idea for POS removal, if you have the skills for it.

For pos removal or just pvp?
Pos removal:torps or cruise(maybe some remote reps)and either shield or armor tank... Whichever your gang is feeding to eachother.
Pvp:I actually like to use cruise and a strong shield tank(for gangs ofc) but most people favor having a mwd, torps and a light shield tank.

Range is 30k, so you'd basically need to use t2 or rigs to hit it. Neither being very odd, one off it's main strengths is still cruise missiles. Being able to deliver increadible dps and stay at range away from all support and close range arrays is no bad feat.
Raven is excellent for pvp, and was even before the torp buff but in a slightly different role. However large fleet engagements where 2 gangs are staticly trying to fire at eachother at 150km has never been it's best game. Still isn't obviously. Parrots, commence!

PVP wise, anything Cruise can do Rails can do better. By the time your missiles arrive there's a good chance your target is already dead.
Torps & heavy shield tank is pretty wicked these days for shear power. Just don't expect to get very far without excellent support for the importaint things. _______________

Well remember the cruise dont have to track/can hit some nano targets/ can hit at point blank... I like them because of that versatility.
But either method works.

So what is the minimum distance I can be away from POS in order to shoot it? What if the POS in question shoots back? Is it even possible to tank it?

It depends how the POS is set up. Sometimes they can be tanked, sometimes they can't. Sometimes you can run an inty around them and run them out of ammo (no web), and sometimes you can't.
It's a mixed bag... but if you're blowing up a deathstar (such as a cynojammer pos), you'll want a buffer tanked/resistance RR BS (a mp/battle ball, really).

What is the usual and maximum range of POS? Would I be completely safe at the range of 250 km for example? so that I would have to worry only about other players.

I seem to recall shooting people at 400+ km, and being shot out to 250km.

Being perfectly Honest, the raven is actually a very good ship even in large scale battles. There are not enough competent raven pilots out there tbh, and thats the problem. A long rage raven for large fleets is more and more importand nowadays. If you are shooting primary, then you are doing something wrong.
Just rig it for missile speed and range and put some ECCM on it. People attack ravens last usually so your job as raven pilot is to ignore primary/secondary etc, and rather focus on enemy EW ships and support ships. --

You need both and do train up your missile support skills as they are just as important as the gun support skills are to gun boats.

Rigged ravens can hit at 250km in approx 20 seconds for around 3600damage per volley, and 2 x eccm = almost 80 Sensor streangth. Like I said, more people should be using ravens properly fitted and not NPC fit.

Edited by: Caffeine Junkie on 10/07/2008 15:41:46 Torp Raven is about the highest consistently damaging battleship for attacking POS, particularly if you can get close enough for Rage Torps. It hits for full damage everytime, and pick the correct damage type.
The other one most often used is the Apoc/Geddon/Abaddon, simply because you don't have to reload.

yes because no one wants a ship that can dish out about 1200 dps on another bs at 30 km.......oh wait

Maybe with rigs you could use torps on a Large POS. If anything you'd just barely reach the POS if you were scraping the shields with your hull. If you wanted to go with range, it's hard to beat the damage a Raven can put out with high damage cruises at the same range on a gun ship, and since the POS isn't going anywhere travel time is mostly a non issue (unless you don't pay attention to the 8x smartbombing rokh sitting directly in your line of fire)

The assertion that anything cruise can do a rail can do better is blatently false. A cruise being slung out of a raven can do far more damage at 249km than any rail ship I've ever seen. The fact that the cruise missiles often get to a target that is dead does not mean they are worse at a job - it's simply that dozens of other weapon systems that are worse got there first. If your shooting at a POS the target certainly isn't warping anywhere. And don't ever underestimate the simple fact that the raven can handily be used to drive ECM support from the field either, or a group of them can shoot at a target very far down on the list. With the lag in many fleet situations, it's not impossible to think that your missiles will hit before the target can actually execute a warp.
Would I use a Raven in fleet ops? Maybe - but I avoid fleet ops as often as possibe as I have never found the slide show space ship version of russian roulette to be much fun.
More importantly, if you had a large group of ravens you'll find that you already have a built in reason to do a spider tank - two utility high slots on every boat.
