Ok so in my perusing of the interwebs and I came across this.
It looks pretty and all and it's apparantly self-sufficiant, but would you live on one? I sure would, it looks like my idea of heaven, using a boat to get around.
It's kinda like living on a space station in EVE
Comments, thoughts, ideas anyone?

I would... as long as Kevin Costner doesn't show up with an annoying little girl in order to get there

Amen to that! Also it looks a bit more....plush than what was basically a city on stilts that got washed away, that's what it looked like anyway

Oh hell yeah! id love to live in a room under the water level. As you say it would be a lot like living on a space station.
This kinda reminds me of Simcity 2000. When I first got the game I rose the sea level to the point where there was no more land and then I rose the sea bed in some areas to create a city composed of tiny islands networked via bridges. Anyway, it didn't work so well because all my sims kept getting warts...could there be a grain of truth to this simulation?

Not in my region. Hurricanes anyone?
Hey look our home is now a surfboard for giants.
I survived living 100 yards off the beach in South Florida for 4 years without a hurricane. One month after I left, my beach got slammed twice in 3 weeks time. I think my luck run out on coastal living much less oceanic living.

Not really an original idea. I read an article a few years ago where some company wanted to build city ships, complete with industrial and commercial districts. The idea was that you could move the city out of harms way in case of storms or wars. They even had an airport on top of it large enough for jumbo jets.
Cool idea but I don't think I would want to live on the first one built, let them iron out the bugs, then we'll talk.

Presumably, they'd have enough vegetation and livestock for a fixed population. They'd probably have to forbid having more than two children per couple though. __________________________

Why would you assume that a floating city would need to be self sufficient? Name one current city that is. It's a floating city not a biosphere.

These are ocean going cities, not self-contained biodomes. They're large enough to have docking locations all around their rim, and an airport too if needed, they'll be supplied just like every other large city on the planet.
That aside, would I live on one, yes I'd like that.

they build a city like that and space problems are over.
need new apartment block? new mall? industrial plants? just attach new module. problem solved. ---

Because the OP said they're self sufficient?
EDIT: and it states it in the article.....

If you ask me it seems to be a perfect place where some unforseen accident or disaster happens which causes hell to break loose on the place. Depending on its location, well maybe the people that lives there gets stuck there and are unable to escape. ---

If it was run by a British local council I'd have to say no. It would fall into disrepair, servicemen would go on strike, the floatation gadgetry would stop working and it would sink. Not to mention being t****d on an island with all the hoodies and ASBO kids -------------

It's a floating city....it's much much harder to import resources from other areas. Also the whole idea behind it is to keep us alive beyond sea level rise and such-like, hence the need for self-sufficiency.
Also that idea for modular construction, excellent! A module could be constructed on the edge, and then detached at will to create a new city if the need arises (we wouldn't one getting too big now would we).
EDIT: My spelling sucks.

It makes me depressed to think that it's many now heavily populated areas could very well be underwater in 50-100 years.
I probably wouldn't live on one, I wouldn't want to get attacked by pirates
