Does anybody know of a free program I can download to convert .ogg to mp3? I've tried googling, but all the sites listed look suspicously like virus distribution points to me.

My pleasure. Silly google didn't even include it in the normal links, that was among the "images" for some really strange reason.

By the way, Winamp now reads .OGG files, so if you have it, you don't even need to convert the files to .mp3.

While that's true, most portable MP3 players wouldn't.

Why would you convert from OGG to Mp3?

Because my mp3 player does not support .ogg files? Quite a few of the mp3 players out there don't support that file format. It's a shame but you gotta work with the hardware you have.

Yup, this is for MP3 player.
Advent music from Sins of a Solar empire = win
Train trip to uni =/= win
Combine the two together and in theory I should get an acceptable average.
(other nerd music include Children of Dune miniseries, baldur's gate and SupCom)

Yeah, most MP3 player suck. Next time I'll buy one that plays not only ogg, but also flac (the format I'm using to rip all my CDs now...) I think right now only Cowon and iriver support flac. I can wait till my ugly, DRM filled, stupid Sony player dies, though. Also, transcoding sucks too. ----

Im sure the audio processor in an mp3 player makes a 320 kbps mp3 and FLAC sound the same, so you really are just wasting room.

Probably. But flash memory is cheap. What I want to avoid is the flac > mp3 transcode. I use the mp3 only like half an hour a day. The rest of the day I listen to music from a PC (at home or at the office.) ----

Actually, I find statements like this... interesting, shall we say?
Let's take an example. When it comes to refresh rates on monitors, I think (speculation alert!) that people tend to agree that 60 Hz on a CRT monitor is bad and might cause eye strain even if it looks perfectly OK to them, yet when it comes to audio these same people can turn around and effectively say that "if you don't hear any difference, there is no difference". See what I'm going for?
Not all people think like this (hell, my theory is based solely on personal experience) and this post is not directed at you personally (political correctness alert!), it's just meant to be food for thought. Why are we so inconsistent about this?
Personally I rip everything to FLAC, no exceptions. I might transcode to MP3 at some point for use in my car etc but I feel dirty every time I have to do it, even though the audio setup in said car is dodgy at best.
