Tom's Hardware is reporting HERE that Bethesda is set to announce the Elder Scrolls Online MMORPG in May after getting corroboration from two other independant sources. It looks to have three factions. Will it be the first big budget sandbox MMORPG to ever hit the market? I'll be following it on the news wires at least and I'm curious as to when they expect to release the game. 2013? |

3 factions instead of 2 = already good news If they stay away from classes and work with a leveling skill based system like Skyrim, they could break the curse of the generic sword n board mmo. And if they are really smart, they'll implement player controlled lands with player controlled strongholds, where players make the rules and players create the world. |

Like so many other mmo projects before it has a ton of potential but being burned in the past so many times in that regard I'll just wait and see. |

It being a WoW clone isn't very likely, since they have developed well working RPG mechanics of their own, but there are other serious issues to consider. The main being the gameplay in their games has been very simple/unbalanced/average at best. Sort of like bioware, but specialized in sandbox games instead of storytelling. That isn't a problem in single player games, but will be in a MMO, especially a sandbox game where you can't escape the powergamers in your private instance. BW solved the issue by using a small number of classes copied from WoW and mirroring them to both sides, while heavily instancing the game. Since Bethesda is know for sandbox games and skilling your character in any way you want, they can't get away with the same solution, |

TES games have always been about the complete package. Taken seperately, the parts are average, maybe good at times - However, every single TES game has proven the saying that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, taking Skyrim as a very obvious example. If you take a closer look at it's seperate parts it's not that good, but put them all together and you get gamer heaven.
While the MMO might have some lacking areas, i think the game taken as a whole will have a LOT of redeeming factors and will make you want to play it anyway. Having a lot of player input and making the world about the players instead of some deus ex machina npc's has always been a hallmark of the TES games, i don't expect it to be different for an MMO.
But, while staying optimistic, i will keep an eye on it. I do hope they get it right. |

This is exactly why I would like to see them go with the customizable skill tree like in Skyrim. We would effectively stop the class op whine and bring it down to individual skills. The setup would end up more like Eve where its based on your build rather than what the dev's boosted that month. |

I hope this is not true. Want KOTOR 3? Here is a an MMO no one asked for!
Love Skyrim? Here is TES 6, an MMO no one asked for...
Sorry but I don't want "another" MMO. You've got eve, WoW and soon GW2 and planetside etc.
Please for the love of... not another crappy game no one asked for, "TES 6 MMO will be like TES 6, 7, 8 and 9!!!" my ass it will...
Because you know Bethesda is in no position to make an MMO and at the same time make a single player RPG, that is a fact. Besides even if they did it would not work, it can't work. So if this is true it means we wont be getting any more TES games.
So please Bethesda, don't take a great franchise and ruin it. Yes George Lucas made a lot of money but NO ONE LIKES HIM!!! |

Who says they will?
Thing is, the MMO scene is full of "been there, done that". I'd be quite happy to see a new MMO that uses a completely different angle to things, turning everything upside down. Will it have issues, bugs and whatnot? sure, it's Bethesda afterall but I would applaud (and pay for) that effort if it got at least the core gameplay right and has the longevity to making it better in the long run.
Doing things differently means finding new solutions to new problems which inevitably means messing up a whole lot, see EVE. Thing is that if Bethesda has the right attitude and drive (something they've proven over the years) it has a good chance of becoming something wonderful and different. The best games/MMOs come from going against the grain, having one's own ideas. There's a good chance of failure and a slim chance of something magical, but what it won't be is mediocre.
OR you can play another WOW/GW clone, your choice. Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

Well, Todd Howard has been directly quoted as saying that Bethesda plans to reboot the Elder Scrolls series to redo the world etc. Indeed, the current storyline seems to be building up to such an event. There was some talk of waiting on the next console cycle to do that for the current series though. And thatGÇÖs where some of my initial concerns arise.
Windows 8 is liable to change gaming when cross platform (pc/console Xbox/ Windows and vice versa) compatibility arrives on the market. There are limitations involved. The most recent example of a cross platform MMO was DC Universe online and to be frank it was lacking in a number of features PC MMO game players appreciate.
Skyrim showed more than a little favoritism toward the console platform. So, is it inevitable that the Elder Scrolls Online will be designed as a console MMO ported to PC?

I really want to be excited, but I can't think of a single big IP-MMO that's come out since 2004 that hasn't been run into the ground trying to be the next WoW. And the latest and greatest hotness is literally paying to win, the only difference being some F2Ps are more obvious about it than others.
Eventually someone will come free us from the endless parade of WoW clones and cash-grab F2Ps that were never intended for any kind of real longevity, but until then I'll stay skeptical and keep playing 2000s era games like EvE until I'm an old man. Yeah they really should just drop the whole epic hero of the land bit and just go with you're better than the average scrub so we want you to do this for us. Reminds me of that comic where all the heroes are standing in line while the npc hands out the 'one-of-a-kind' sword before yelling next. |

Well I knew that was going to be a clone long before it came out. Just watch production, if you see the normal signs you simply move on (and definitely do not play it then rant like a raving madman about it for months after). If this fails, well there hopefully should be mechwarrior at the end of the year. Rumor has it they are getting over the lawsuit hurdle. |

Yeah, I waited until SWTOR was released, then watched people play it on some live stream website, after watching about an hour of some guy power leveling, I was pretty much like "ok, wow clone...next?" and decided not to even bother with it.
More than likely it will be another WoW clone, since that seems to be all most MMO developers understand now a days. http://youtu.be/yytbDZrw1jc |

I love TES. It's one of the few single players games I would go out of my way to play. It's also one of the strengths. You can chill out and not worry about anyone questioning why you are killing everything with a brush while high on skooma. I have deep misgivings the whole MMO genre. It becomes a bit of a treadmill TBH. Grinding gear and levels with these endless quests that make u feel a bit of gopher. Then theres the gear that will only last for a few days before you outgrow it.... just no.... it's not fun.
Personally I'll wait for the official anouncement rather than hearsay. But I want get too excited. |
