A little while ago, I um...while I was doing a mission for my friend and part-time employer miss Coul, I saw this really bright light surrounded by stuff. I was really curious because you know...it was bright and kinda shiny cause of all the metal around it. So I went to get a closer look at it. I stared at it for a little while until my eyes started to hurt then I started to search through my ships library for what it could possibly be and found just one article that sounded like the thing I found: it was called a "Spacial Anomaly" and said that it was very dangerous and it was rumored that anyone who got too close was never heard from again...that really scared me. I immediately told my ship that I wanted to go back to the station and off I went...miss Coul was mad when I got back because I had forgotten about the mission again, but I guess it was ok. But I've been wondering...are the rumors true? Or should I update my library? Sorry for wasting your time... |

From what I've seen, most of these anomolies arn't powerful enough to affect your ship at all, but on rare occasions I've been able to harness the energy of one and use it to slingshot my ship to a nearby Deadspace pocket; very much like an Acceleration Gate, in fact, but far less stable.
Turns out that the Drones had something to do with it, 'cause they were waiting for me on the other side! Luckily, my shields held long enough to take out all of the warp scramblers and I was able to escape; if only by the skin of my teeth! ...

Spatial rift phenomena are somewhat akin to wormholes formed by jumpgates, but on a much smaller scale, usually unable to transit a pilot more than a few hundred thousand clicks. The reason why quite a lot of pilots don't return from using them is because they are dangerously unstable and can tear an unprepared ship into subatomic particles almost instantaneously. Also, some anomalous rifts can theoretically transport ships over greater distances, but I've never seen a rift like this which was stable.
As previously mentioned, they seem to have something to do with the rogue drones - they are very visible in regions where the drones are heavily fortified. Given that Rogue Drones are very rarely seen using stargates, if at all, I have a theory that they instead use these rifts to hop between systems. Perhaps they have some way of stabilising them. -----

Could be Mr Ixiris. Their smaller size doesn't require a portal as big as the stargates, and they could use this small portals as cynos of their own. But I'm sure more people know how to use them, as it actually is a good explanation of how the first acceleration to the drone regions was opened (the one referenced to in the Code Aria Inquiry).
