If they existed in real life, how big would they be? House sized? Car sized? Fighter jet sized?

House sized I think.
As in your house would fit inside if you hollowed one out.
But I have no idea why I think that, so I may very well be wrong. -

I remember a picture a while back that showed that the Rifter class frigate is almost exactly the same detentions as a 747.

Bigger than you might think.
More like apartment building sized. Larger ships are like football stadium sized.
There was some discussion in the ambulation video on the difficulty of presenting a sense of scale and showing how big the ships really are.

Edited by: soldieroffortune 258 on 15/07/2008 17:22:51 if you look at that ship comparison chart, it would say that even frigate ships are hella big, and something like a BS is around the size (in length) of like 3 or 4 city blocks or more, so yeah, lol like everyone said, pretty huge
EDIT: Typo

You can always turn on "size" in the overview to get the size of ships. A titan iirc is like 3000m long.

Th Eiffel tower is 300m high, or one of finger on RMR's size comparaison jpeg :)
So...
The Erebus's size is +/- 50 fingers * 300m... 15km ? Fetchez la vache !

that would explain why they say that titans are flying cities

1 747 = 70.7m
1 Rifter = 1 747
Assuming 1 Ragnarok = ~2000x Rifters by my reckoning
2000 x 70.7 = 141000m = 141km
Assuming 1 Ragnarok = ~1000x Rifters [probably more accurate]
1000 x 70.7 = 70700m = 70.7km
I would be very surprised if the Ragnarok was under 1000 rifters long, and is probably somewhere between those two lengths.
Even the Avatar looks to be within 65km length, and that's the shortest Titan [marginally]

I'm afraid your way out, Titans are roughly 10-15Km Max, MS are only about 2-2.5Km and hyperion the largest BS is about 1.5Km the Mega is 800M roughly. I can't find the pic that shows this but I'm sure some kind person will link you you the ship chart with names + lengths.

Some where, long ago, there were some pre-release images of "blueprints" for a lot of hulls, I still have a couple. I wish i still had them. someone better with this internet thingie might be able to post them. anyways as per the specs: Raven Max Length 920m Max Height 860m Max Breadth 620m Wieght 2,525,000 tons Crew 7500
Tristan Max Lenght 32m Max Height 56m Max Breadth 40m weight 1620t crew 1
Condor Max Lenght 60m Max Height 45m Max Breadth 30m weight 2,025t Crew 1
Incursus Max Lenght 72m Max Height 28m Max Breadth24m weight 1,870t crew 1
so in other words pretty freakin huge.

Most of the ships in EVE with their sizes noted next to them. It is a 3.6MB jpeg, so give it time to load.
Most frigs appear to be between 30 and 100 meters long depending on hull configuration.

I don't buy it.
Just look at the agility of any modest sized ship. If they were that big the acceleration taking place in a turn would turn all the biomass inside into paste and tear most of the ship apart. Not to mention the acceleration of a MWD.
For example, a decent interceptor can hit 7km/s in about 3 seconds. That's 2333 m/s/s. Or about 238 "gees". Which would kill anything inside bigger than a tiny insect. That's kind of an extreme example, but a cruiser the size of the Eiffel tower turning in 8 seconds? Not happening.
Another example, the crawler that NASA uses to move the shuttle & rockets is about Eiffel sized. And it moves a screaming 1.78816 m/s. - Support fixing the UI|Suggest Jita fixes|Compact logs |

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 15/07/2008 22:07:48 Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 15/07/2008 22:05:50 EVE's starships have something that Crawler doesn't: Active artificial gravity. (i.e. internal directed gravity fields) With some clever tweaking those can probably compensate for an awful lot of acceleration, keeping it at a steady 1G towards the floor by projecting fields to counter acceleration in other directions. systems like that probably lag a little bit meaning the crew will notice the shifts, but not at a level where it'll reduce your precious crew to bloody meat paste smeared around the inside of your ship. (basically the idea behind an inertial damper)
Also, frigates usually don't have more than the pod-pilot on board, and since you are immersed in a liquid (probably mostly water with some added stuff) you won't suffer acceleration to much. Water, unlike air, doesn't compress at all when accelerated. It just pushes harder against its container, but the volume doesn't change. (and since your lungs are probably full of the same hyper oxygenated goop as the pod you don't get crushed) So acceleration is effectively irrelevant in that case. (up to a point, the pods hull needs to be able to handle the pressure)
The principle for the crew is probably similar to the Inertial dampers in StarTrek. Those ships have some pretty silly acceleration. (stationary to full impulse takes 3 or 4 seconds?) Full Impulse is around 150,000 km/s, so you're looking at around 37,500 km/s^2 acceleration there, or roughly 3.8 million G.
