If they're really refusing to talk to you based purely on the type of music you're listening to then there's not alot you can do about it.

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 15/07/2008 17:43:34 Yes there is a number of metal bands that do have evil and satanic messages, but a mojority of metal is not like that at all. Your best bet is to get the lyrics to songs that disprove your parents belief and let them read them. Contrary to popular beliefs, heavy metal music tends to be one of the, if not the number one, most socialy conscious forms of music and also the most tolerant of individuality within the scene.
My family never out right thought I was evil or a Satanist but they definatley did not approve of me listening to it. Also find out who they listened to when they were growing up and I am almsot sure you could find lyrics that are quite questionable. That is if they listened to much music. My mother and father did not have a very musical upbrining and therfore do not realy understand music.
P.S. Spinal Tap is great

Well, your family might be very religious people. Go to your church, talk to your priest/pastor to see if he can help you. There's not much we can do for you. This is something you have to solve by yourself. Sorry.

Personally the following is dead on. I always said the a mosh pit was a controlled form of agression release. "Listening to Heavy Metal frees me from my rage" here
My favorite quote from the above excerpt.
"Should parents be worried if her future children locked themselves in their room for four hours listening to music? ôIÆd worry if they isolated themselves for four hours. Not their musical choices.ö
I would be able to get you more information to base your discussion on, but I no longer have acess to my Universities online database.
Hope these give you a little basis for your discussion with your parents.

Try Haste the Day as well. Burning Bridges is easily their best album.

spinal tap aside (honestly, make them watch it. if they're not laughing at it, then they clearly have had a humourectomy, and there is no hope...) I suspect your best option here is really for a vague hope of common sense. now, obviously, I have no clue what your family are like... so this may not work.
particularly as it involves the use of rational common sense, which is often lacking in erm, shall we say "particularly devout" people.
point out the following. Robert Leroy Johnston (1911-1938), was claimed, in his own lifetime of having "sold his soul to satan". his music was (and still is) some of the best blues ever recorded, and his music was instrumental in influencing artists as varied as the 40's delta bluesmen (Muddy Waters, etc), Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and many of the 60's blues-inspired bands... check if their record collection has any of it, and point that out.
and if "Sweet home, Chicago" is satanic, then I dread to think what is appropriate.
From there, Elvis was described as "lewd" for dancing, and Chuck Berry was a threat to civilisation. If they sincerely think that sort of stuff, there's no hope of common sense from them short of you becoming Amish.
Point out that songs like Iron Maiden's "number of the beast" far from celebrating some satanic rite, were actually inspired by nightmare. (and a little bit of "let's annoy people with the title" on their part).
and lastly, ask them why, in all sincerity, they think that listening to some music would transform you into beezlebubb's earthly minion? Would you listening to trance and techno instantly turn you into a pill-guzzling raver? perhaps you should listen to rap, and instantly become "a 'ho pimpin' gangsta"? maybe listening to Wagner's music will turn your into an arayan anti semetic... or listening to country and western will make you beat (or shoot) your wife and cheat on them... and of course, listening to Frankie Goes to Hollywood will turn you into a S&M-loving homosexual male...

Well, you can't use rational thinking as a counter-argument to faith, really. The only thing I can think of that he can tell his parents is: "I thought faith and religion were meant to unite families and to care, love and understand each other. If your religion only tells you to segregate me and makes you unable to understand me and see that the music I listen doesn't make me a satanist, then I don't need you and your religion, and I'm turning into an atheist..." And wait to see if his family re-think about the problem. Other than that or taking to the priest/pastor, there's not much he can do, specially if his family is very strict and religious.

Then you can pretend to be possessed by a demon, and let them do exorcismS on you and laugh at them as their exorcismS do nothing, as long as you're not getting bored from pretending.

You can be pretty sure the likes of Slayer and others would be found in the most influential list of the above mentioned Christian Bands
If you would really like a Kick ass socio-political band try out Sepultura

- Common Bonds - no video
Before we're born Before we walk Before we talk and hate Yet to come the perfect rule After we win After we lose After the dawn is late Do it now or shut your mouth No lack of trust, just trust myself No more perhaps, no more false step Changes in sight, sight! Common bonds Fear the fate that's not the shape of the soul Trust the heart and share to ease the pain No mistake is big enough to bring you down The wrinkles on your face is strength in your mind No lack of trust, just trust myself Changes in sight, sight! Common bonds The urge to win A time to strike Follow no one Follow no one Strength in mind

Depends - I happen to love two of those three groups (never heard Sabaton, maybe I'll check 'em out) and Rhapsody of Fire is one of the biggest metal groups in the world (though not in the US, for some strange reason. Same with Blind Guardian)
If you don't live at home you can tell them to **** off - they'll get over it eventually (and it's been my experience that this happens for everyone sooner or later anyway).
If not you can always get some Dimmu Borgir or Celtic Frost and let them hear what real satanic metal is like . Or point out the fact their parents though rock music was the work of the devil and *their* parents thought the same about jazz music and their parents thought the same about the telephone. Anything new is evil to some people - I've never really understood it myself.

Ditto to the above comments about Dimmu Borger (I am going to show in a few months where they are openers ) and Celtic Frost. Add to that list the likes of Mayhem, Behemoth, Emperor.
In the past to stay away from satanic metal I would say stay away from many of the Norwegian Black Metal bands, but that is to much of a generalization nowadays.
This is one of the most comprehensive metal pages I have ever come across. It does not have every metal band currently out there, but like I said the best I have come across.
BNR Metal Pages
And the following link is to an article where, Dave Mustain lead singer/creator of MEGADETH, said he was going to cancel all Greek dates where Black Metal band Rotting Christ were set to open for MEGADEATH. He is one of the most political metal song writters who 3 years ago converted back to Christianity. He was willing to loose money to not suppport blatant Satanic bands.
Just talk with your parents and have literature to back up your position to why most metal is not satanic or evil for that matter.

Sorry to say but as people your parents will stereo type you like anyone else. Personally I really can't take heavy metal openly. Maybe Killswitch Engage only because I can actually understand what the vocalist is saying. Now don't get my wrong, songs like Hexagram by the Deftones sounds like a big slur of words but the meaning goes deep, so it passes. Not only that something about 'growling' just makes me want to slap the $hit out of them. I remember listening to Faction on sirius radio and Jason Ellis was on. He likes the heavy stuff but I remember once he made a funny comment when someone started playing some heavy metal of some cheap band. HE was like I really hate that growling crap, espcially when there like all girly at first like "you can have my number", then a second later *in a growling voice* "No you can't Im a badass bahhhh" or something like that. ya...I'll stop now.

Well, as long as you do not harm another human being or get to crazy with the animals, not much I could say is wrong with being a Satanist. But that is my opinion of that counter culture.
The OP's issue is that their parents have problems with their child liking metal because they think it is All evil and Satanic like. Which is a false dicotmoy.

Another Christian band that I find you should probably mention...
MORTIFICATION
\m/
Anyway, just try and be open with them, and explain that its just something you like. They are just under the illusion that "Heavy Metal = Satanic". Which is not true in ANY respect. Its just a more forceful form of music.
Another thing you could say is this little quote about metal i heard a while back:
Powerful music for a powerful God. See what they think of that.
