Here's an example,
I have a 280mm Prototype I Siege Cannon with an optimal range of 12km. I put it on a Thrasher which has 50% bonus to optimal range for small projectile turrets. I load up Phased Plasma S with range bonus 37.5
what is my optimal range?
12km * 1.5 * 1.375 = 24.75km?
Or is it still 12km? What is the range bonus mean in Ammo attributes mean?
Any help is appreciated.

Optimal range varries based upon skills, and ship bonus ( such as the Thrasher ) and Ammo type.
Easiest way to see your current Opt is to undock load ammo, and show info on your Arty icon. under attributes it will have your current value for Optimal based upon Ammo choice, and other vairables.

phased plasma is -37.5%. That is, it REDUCES your range.

This!
The item database listes it as a 37.5% range bonus when it is really a 37.5% range penalty.
Otherwise you are on the right track.
Just multiply in the bonus for your level of Sharp Shooting and you will probably have covered all the modifiers to your guns' range. Although there might be something else depending on the specifics of the situation.

Is this really the case? Then it would make it quite a bit simpler to check. I ask because in my current setup (280s, thrasher, sharpshooter, iron S) the show info gives a value of "30000". It seemed a bit too rounded to be an accurate erpresentation of all the bonuses stacked together :) --- Kayeed

If I'm doing my maths correctly your optimal range should be around 11.2km. |

No it doesn't - it gives a value of "30km". Which is obviously rounded to the nearest whole km, but when it comes down to it that possible 500m deviation isn't going to make any actual difference in how you fly your ship. Treat it as 29km if you're over-conservative. 30km in a Thrasher with Iron sounds about right.
And yes - showing info on modules fitted to your ship (or showing info on your ship itself) while in space shows exactly how they will perform based on your current skills, ship bonuses, ammo, etc (it will even include temporary effects for example enemy tracking disruptors, and friendly tracking links). Which is of course very nice.

Yes, the attributes do update to reflect the modifiers when a gun is mounted on your ship.
BTW, you cannot load Iron S into a projectile turret.
However, 280's loaded on a thrasher with sharpshooter 5 and loaded with Carbonized Lead will give you an optimal range of 30 km.
