Edited by: Kaylana Syi on 16/07/2008 17:17:07 I think the video card problems I and most people are having is due to our video Card's, especially AMD HD2x/3x and Nvidia Mobile GPU's, doing aggressive power savings. This power saving will have multiple 2D and 3D states and the load on the GPU determines which state.
Many problems are being had on the HD3850's around the internet. I am one of them. EVE is the only game that it really rears its ugly head on. EVE is the only game I play in windowed mode, where there will be 2D clock shifting along with 3D clock shifting.
There are a few ways you can fix this. The easiest is to use RivaTuner to force 1 2D profile and 1 3D profile. You could alternately force an overclock that will keep your GPU always at 100%. Obviously that isn't a great solution for Laptop users. Flashing video card BIOSes with voltage, clock and fan profiles that have been modified can also fix the issue. That however isn't something for someone who doesn't know what they are doing with modding since you could easily brick your video card.
CCP could also implement some code in the engine to always keep the GPU at 100% but this is probably less likely to happen and quite honestly its not their problem.
For some people the issue is simply their power supplies aren't feeding the cards enough power or they have improper airflow. Hope this helps. EVE isn't really at fault here.

Any way you can explain this a little less nuclear scientificly ? thanks. Didn't even understand ur problem, i get the feeling its same as mine, so if you could explain a little would be awesome. --------------------

Video cards are crashing all over the net, its not just EVE, based on power management aggressiveness in Drivers. ATI uses a PWM and the single slot 3850 was released with a bios that likes to undervolt to lower clock and memory speeds.
So in laymans terms, when you are using graphics your video card goes fast. When you are not going fast you video card might slow itself down. EVE, especially in windowed mode, seems to not tax the card as much doing certain things. So it slows down, when all of a sudden you speed up the driver crashes and your computer can freeze up etc. Or even reboot.
Its not just EVE. Also, Nvidia laptops do this to save power.
I think this is what is happening to a lot of people with EVE. There are a few ways around it, like overclocking or even underclocking your card via tools like ATItool and RivaTuner, Flashing your video card's bios ( not recommended for beginners ) and RMA'ing the card to the manufacturer for a new bios.
Other people might just be having problems where there powersupply just isn't giving it sufficient power on the 12 volt rail which might give similar symptoms. This is just a directional post, ymmv.

Now, this is exactly why I tell people to buy proper hardware in the first place. Sure, you might pay a bit more for it, but the benefits heavily outweighs the price. Could this be Intel/nVIDIA fanboy-ism? ATi, and AMD they merged with, are (if you insist, were) reputable. The 3850s and above, if I remember, and I may not, gave better performance than nVIDIA counterparts for same price. It was around price of 8600GTS or 8800GS, IIRC, and outstripped it, even if not by that much. ---------------------

I may have assumed too much, since his statement was a bit vague and ambiguous.
That, I shall admit. ---------------------

I'd agree with this. I would however argue that actually what can appear quality hardware in the laptop market and what actually is, is much harder to guess than for normal PCs. For example, the very large CAD company I work for has had no end of trouble with recent IBM laptops and graphics, and they if anyone should be able to get the design right. My advice on a gaming laptop is try before you buy, and ask to see it run for a good half-hour minimum with a 3D demo of your choice. The mobile PC market just isn't as well supported as the mainstream one. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation or alliance, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... |
