Hello, I was always wondering why my background picture is so ugly. My video card is good (ATi Radeon HD 3850), all graphics options are set to high. The game claims to have superior graphics, and it does have really nice textures on ships, stations, stargates. But the simple picture in the background of the system looks like it was made in paint using 256 different colors. Is there any way to fix it or does it "work as intended"? Thanks!

For me ive always wondered ..why the fishtank feel? does not feel like space, feels more like being inside a glass bowl that is painted.

I really hope its my graphics options, because creating a background in this game is very simple. Unlike creating new textures for ships, stations, and other objects, the background is just a 2-D picture.

edit..i give up how the hell do you post links on this forum

Edited by: Xelios Xarxes on 17/07/2008 22:09:14 I think it's the color banding on pretty much every space background in the game. The colors/gradients just don't blend seamlessly, and on certain graphics it's really obvious, even at max settings.
An example: http://media.arstechnica.com/news.media/Colour_banding_example01.png
^^I see a lot of graphics in Eve blend somewhere between the first two in the image, rather than the third (24 bit).

Then I guess its not just me... The thing is - my settings for color depth are 24 bit. But its clearly less than that for the background picture. Those pictures were probably developed in the dark ages long before the game was even released in 2003. But everything else has been revamped except for those ugly background pictures that are probably the easiest to upgrade... Oh well.. i guess we'll just have to stick with those 8-bit Nintendo graphics for the background ;)

Are you using a LCD monitor? I noticed that it started happening when I switched from a CRT to a LCD monitor. Apparently, banding is more noticeable in LCD monitors than in CRTs. Try this to see if it helps. ----

I passed all the tests on that website. I do have a decent Samsung monitor. I dont have a CRT monitor to test your hypothesis with, but it does sound reasonable. However, I am afraid EVE Online is the only game, application where this error is noticable (on a LCD monitor) so CCP should be able to fix it.

I used to get banding like that on my old crt and lcd but since i switched to a 30" lcd the banding is hardly noticeable.

I've got the same kind of problem here. It's most noticable in background windows, for example: charactersheet, the panel on the left, login screen, settings window But also in space, most noticable near the sun in some areas.
I've taken a couple screenshots to show you: Charsheet - Leftside Panel - Undock Window - Space Background
My settings (again clearly visible here): Settings Window
My configuration: GeForce 8800 GTS (driver: 6.14.11.7516 2/05/2008) Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM(Digital)

desintox, I also have the same "banding" on the UI windows, but they dont bother me as much. But the banding on background images in the space really drives me nuts...

Edited by: desintox on 18/07/2008 18:00:49 Yes, I have it too in the background images in space, just couldn't find a spot right now to clearly display it. I also only have this problem in EVE and not in other games or applications, so the banding shouldn't be related to my graphic card or LCD.
Wonder what it is though
To compare... wich LCD screen do you have Ne0SHNIK?

I also have banding in the backgrounds in space... and my game went real dark since i switched to a lcd monitor... and Eve is the only game\application that does it... But Eve is quite ******ed when it comes to grafix options... It's the only game i know that doesn't have gamma settings in game... To be told to adjust my main grfix card brightness and gamma to play the game is a stupid thing... CCP.. Add some graphics options to this thing... Took me forever for Eve to apply my antialias settings.. And they change whenever i go from full screen to windowed mode ... Fix this damnit...

I'm pretty sure there's another colour option up from 24 bit in the EVE menu, isn't there? I had this same problem with a laptop of mine but I changed the colour depth to 32 (I think) and it looks fine now. I'd have to check when I get to a PC with EVE installed.

I have to agree (and yes i know its not much to do with gameplay) but what the herll is up with the graphics options on this thing.. Those that exist are in a language of there own, I have to use nhancer to get AA, and no gama adjustment??
These problems have existed for years with eve and surely to goodness the fix can't be that difficult.
The excuse that the AA is Nvidias fault has to be the worst excuse ever... how come every other game works

Only "24-bit color with 8-bit alpha" and I've tried that option too, I even tried all the options to see the difference. When you hover over the color depth field it says that EVE is created in 24-bit color with 8-bit alpha and lowering it can increase performance (less quality). In the other field "Depth/Stencil Format" it says 32-bit is recommended, but when I select 32-bit it automatically changes to "32-bit z-buffer with 8-bit stencil".
I suppose this is normal, but changing the settings there in those two fields won't affect the banding issue at all.

The 'fish tank feel' is to reduce server resources, which in-turn reduces server lag. That's why all systems have a simple background image that may vary from system to system.
