Hey everyone,
This is very rough, so bear with me.
Using http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/names.htm as my template, I am sorta piecing together a listing of how the EVE ships might be designated. I have started with the basic Tech 1 ships.
Frigates are small fast ships with multiple roles. I had to extrapolate two of the designations, the AOM, I looked but there is no wet-navy designation for a mining ship, we donÆt really have them, lol. AOM (AO for oilers and tankers, with an M for mining tagged on), might work and FFEW (EW is usually used for aircraft, meaning Electronic Warfare, thus you could tag these as FFEW). FF (Frigate) û Executioner, Punisher, Atron, Incursus, Tristan, Rifter, Slasher FFG (Missile Frigate) û Inquistor, Condor, Kestrel, Merlin, Breacher AGS (Survey Ship) û Magnate, Heron, Imicus, Probe AOM (Mining Transport) û Tormentor, Bantam, Navitas, Burst FFEW (Electronic Warfare Frigate) û Crucifier, Griffin, Maulus, Vigil
Destroyers are a slightly heavy more combat capable ship than a Frigate. Most of the EVE destroyer descriptions classified them as DD (as none had any mention of missile bonuses), but if you stick in missiles then it would reclassify its as DDG, if you add in any sort of heavy armor modules and shield hardeners and such, that slow it down to a crawl then you could classify it as DE (destroyer escort). Finally a lot of people use the EVE destroyers as salvage ships. ARS is the designation for a Salvager. DD (Destroyer) û Coercer, Cormorant, Catalyst, Thrasher
Cruisers are the 1st of the larger more powerful ships. A lot of players use cruisers as their main ship for extended times as they are truly versatile. CL (Light Cruiser) û Augoror, Osprey, Exequror, Bellicose, Stabber, Scythe CG (Missile Cruiser) û Caracal CA (Heavy Cruiser) û Omen, Maller, Moa, Thorax, Rupture CVE (Escort Carrier Vessel) û Arbitrator, Vexor CEW (Electronic Warfare Cruiser) û Blackbird, Celestis
Battlecruisers are the next step in cruiser evolution, packing more armor and firepower. I made one extrapolation, the CBG, as the Drake is basically one big mobile missile platform. CB (Large Cruiser/Battlecruiser) û Prophecy, Harbinger, Ferox, Brutix, Cyclone, Hurricane CBG (Large Missile Cruiser) û Drake CVL (Light Carrier Vessel) û Myrmidon Battleships are the last of the big combat ships most players get a hold of, consider to make the dreadnaughts and other ships you really need to be in low to null-sec space. BB (Battleships) û Abaddon, Apocalypse, Armageddon, Raven, Rohk, Scorpion, Hyperion, Megathron, Maelstrom, Tempest, Typhoon CV (Carrier Vessel) û Dominix
Dreadnaughts are the 1st of the big capital class combat vessels. For these guys I took a term from David WebberÆs Honor Harrington books and used ôDNö. DN (Dreadnaught) û Revelation, Phoenix, Moros, Naglfar
Carriers are big vessels that carry smaller attack ships, from fighters to frigates and maybe even destroyers or cruisers. CVB is the best designation though I suspose you could go with CV or CVN, though in EVE I think the ônuclearö designation is kinda not needed. Titans are the biggest, nastiest combat ship there is (for nowà I am secretly constructing an SSD but more on that later ..shhhhhh). I figure either SD for super-dreadnaught (term for the biggest combat ships in the Honor Harrington series) or TN for Titan. Either looks neat.
More ships later, but please, I would love to see feedback and possible suggestions for the other ships in EVE, especially some of the T2 ships.
