Edited by: Ga''len on 17/07/2008 16:41:27 This post is meant for those of us who like to pirate or anyone who finds themselves with a Global Criminal Flag, NPC faction and/or sentry timer.
After having lost a few ships to this and a few petition responses that explain this issue from the GM's, I though it was important to actively share this information the forums rather than the knowledgebase, so that people are not caught unaware.
Put simply, there are hidden timers in the game mechanics. Let's face it, if it were easy, everyone would be a pirate.
Example:
You are an 'ebil piwat' and you have just popped some poor pilot in a belt. If you look at the top left part of your screen, you have a global criminal flag timer there, let's say it's got 13 minutes left.
You warp to a station and you dock, well before the station sentry guns fire on you. After 13 minutes you undock, there is no visible timer on your game client screen. Approximately 10 seconds after you undock, the station sentry guns begin to shoot at you and you now have a new, yellow timer visible on your game client screen.
Explaination:
This is a simply rehash of the GM response I received. When you came to the station, the sentry guns saw you. When you docked, you initiated a session change and the timer went on hold. When you undocked, the timer reset and became active again, hence the sentry fire.
Now, for those of you who are thinking, well, let the guns shoot you before you dock, that won't work either. The timer will reset upon the session change, ie, when you undock.
Solution:
Be AWARE OF YOUR TIMERS THAT ARE VISIBLE WHEN YOU DOCK AT A STATION.
If you dock with an active timer on your screen, be sure to do one of the following:
- Stay docked for at least 15 minutes, do not rely on the timers that are visible on your screen.
- If you must undock before that 15 minutes is up, warp to an insta-warp point that allows you to jump into warp as soon as you undock from a station. Be warned, warping away from the station before the sentry guns fire on you will reset the timer once again. If you return to the station before 15 minutes is up, you will be shot by the sentry guns.
I hope that you find this useful, be careful out there.

I just want to add that this include gates sentries and all concord/faction navy npc.
If you warp to a gate then jump, your uncompleted timers will resets to 15 minutes when you appear on the otherside and the visible timer will not update.

Wow, I was not aware of the silent timer resets. I've never been bit by it yet, but now that I know, I will be more careful. Seems like CCP could quite trivially add a little more code to make the agression timer update on these events instead of being, as it now seems, quite "******ed".

Good point, thanx for bringing this up too.

Very good post! I've been trying to figure out this little peculiarity myself, but haven't managed to. Thanks a lot!
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

UPDATE:
This issue may have been fixed with the Empyrean Age 1.1 patch:
The aggression timer has been tweaked and will now correctly display the amount of time left before it is safe to dock/undock at a station or approach a stargate.
