ôIÆm scared mum.ö The girlÆs voice quivered. ôI know Marissa. IÆm scared too.ö She replied softly.
ôWhat will happen to us if they land here?ö ôI donÆt know Marissa.ö
ôWill I still be able to go to church after they come? Or play with my friends?ö ôNo Marissa.ö
ôCan I still visit the old tree, or pet the goats by Blueberry Creek?ö ôI donÆt think so Marissa.ö
ôWill they take us?ö ôI donÆt know Marissa.ö
ôBut Dad wonÆt let them take us, he will fight!ö the girl said defiantly. Her mother looked away into the fire of the hearth. ôThat is what IÆm afraid of.ö
ôWhy are they doing this mum?ö ôMum?ö she repeated after a brief pause. ôThey say they want to free us. Help us.... I just wish they would leave us alone.ö
ôWhy isnÆt the Empire protecting us?ö ôThe Empire was foolish. The Empire prepared for peace while the terrorists prepared for war. The Empire thought they could solve their differences peacefully. You know grandpa always said æyou canÆt teach a mean dog to be good, you need to put it downÆ. I think the Empire forgot that.ö
The mother gently took her daughter's hand with her own before adressing her.
ôMarissa, if they land remember to remove your Amarrian cross and put those symbols I have hidden in the cellar around your neck. And if you see them, yell æfor Freedom!Æ and raise your fist.ö ôBut mum, isnÆt that lying? Cause lying is a sin, the Priest said so.ö ôPlease Marissa, do it for me. Just this once.ö
ôCan I take my prayerbook with me if they take us?ö ôNo Marissa, you have to leave it behind. If you need to pray after they come, do it silently, in your mind. And if you see me being friendly with them, donÆt ever tell your father. IÆm just doing that to save our lives. Remember that.ö ôYes mum.ö
ôNow let us pray. While we still can.ö

Originally by: Sallera Zephyr Well, that's... excessive. *snorts* Blueberry Creek? Please... I'm sure you have a perfectly valid point, but sympathy is hardly the best way to appeal to your intended audience.
The consequences of war do not appeal to many. However, to just disregard them because they lack the proper appeal is not my style.
Originally by: Sallera Zephyr Although perhaps I shouldn't say that, as I don't know who said audience is. Regardless, I really think you're better off sticking with those who use reasoned debate, instead of this saccharine display.
The story is indeed somewhat melodramatic, and reasoned debate is indeed my personal preference. However, this is not my story.
I also believe that the reasoned debaters as well as the bloodthirsty warmongers here may sometimes forget about practical realities such as these. ____

Thank you ms. Subaka, for answering a few of the questions some of the visitors here were voicing.
Yes, there are slaves being abused by their masters in the Empire, slaves that need to be restrained by Vitoc, slaves that must live and work under harsh conditions. I don not deny any of these accusations.
I am merely pointing out that there are many, many more slaves living fairly ordinary lives under the blessing of our Lord. Slaves perfectly content with their lot, slaves neither needing nor desiring to have their lives torn apart because some bloodthirsty maniac thing it is a good idea at the time.
The Matari warmongers like to forget this. They like to point out isolated incidents as if these justify their atrocious acts. They do not. Such animals will meet their ultimate judgement in the afterlife, and if they allow me, I will help them find their way there.
Marissa and her mother are the Lord's children, and I fight to protect them. I fight to preserve their devout way of life. I fight to preserve their chance at enlightenment and eternal bliss in the afterlife.

Sahtogas, on which the story takes place, has not been occupied by the Matari-aligned forces. However, Imperial Naval forces have been under attack by heathen warships on a daily basis. Many of the system's inhabitants, slave and citizen alike, fear a Republic occupation force may land any day.
The story simply illustrates the fears of a particular child and her mother. They simply don't know what will happen to them *if* the Matari occupy Sahtogas. However, some of the things they fear are very real possibilities.
Why publish this story? I published it because the Matari tend to gloss over such things. They like to pretend that everyone is either an evil slaver deserving to die, or a hapless abused slave awaiting their invasion with open arms. That is most assuredly not the case. In fact, such cases are far and few between.
Many Matari pod-pilots joining the war have suffered some personal (real or imagined) grievance at the hands of some slave holder in the past. Traumatized as they are, they tend to project their problems outwards in the form of aggression and bloodlust. I rather they turned inward and ask God for help rather than merely attempting to traumatize yet more people.
I would prefer it if they gave up their fight and turned themselves in, but will remain steadfast in defense of the empire if they continue their unprovoked aggression.
Matari heathens: standing in pools of slaver blood will only diminish your anger and pain for a moment, embracing God will allow you to get rid of them forever. ____

I believe you need a reminder:
Originally by: BloodBird What a beutiful, well made and exellently performed work of fiction, this here was.
Either you believe my post is fictionial, or you are lying. I assumed the first, hence you were asking questions about something you consider a work of fiction, thus my book club comment. In both cases, I do not see any point in answering your questions. ____
